Swifter and Slower Ways

From Thomas Cleary’s The Zen Reader:

Worldly afflictions are as extensive as an ocean, noisy and clamorous; but they all arise from the thoughts in your own mind.  When not a single thought is conceived, you are liberated from them all.

Since it depends on one’s own self, how hard could it be?  Attaining Buddhahood shouldn’t even take a finger snap.

Viewed in this way, it seems very easy; but even so, you must be the one to do it. An ancient also said, “The moment you produce a thought, it is an object; just don’t have a single thought, and objects disappear, so mind dies out spontaneously, and there is nothing more to pursue.”

Those who already have good roots will understand this kind of talk the moment they hear it.  Those who may be slower should look into it over and over — ultimately what principle is this?

    Cool post.

In Hungarian, “anger” and “poison” are the same word, so can be differentiated only through context. “Angry” is also spelled the same way as “poisonous.” So poisonous snake and angry snake are the same thing.

    Anger/posion = Méreg
    Angry/poisonous = Mérges

  2. Anger also is destructive to the central nervous system. It dumps all manner of toxins into the body and frys the nerves.

I knew a person that got angry a lot. They were in physical pain a lot also. Anger and hate constrict the whole physical system and stress the heart.

The corollary is that love, peace, joy heal the body mind and spirit with a fresh infusion of theta/prana/life force.

  3. I like the reference you used. And I like the Buddha quote. Its all about thoughts. The anatomy of thoughts is central to any study of the mind and spirit. LRH covered it in many places. The trick is to understand it, and then be able to spot their creation and control thoughts. Takes a quiet mind and some self-discipline. Lots of teachings on this. Some esoteric, like Percivals “Thinking and destiny”, some more easily understood like “As a man thinketh” by James Allen. There may be some auditing that even undercuts it, which would be very valuable.

  4. Wonderful quote !

  5. Marty,

    Beautiful quote!
Easier said than done, but that is the old mystical puzzle still waiting for each one of us to solve it.

All I know personally, is that mind disappears when survival of self is no longer required or sought after. But can we achieve that still holding to the body ?

    Beautiful tread Marty.

  6. I really like the Buddah quote on anger. It is a fundamental truth. As for the Ta TU quote; I believe the word thought should be replaced with “idea”. It got lost in the translation. Just my five cents.

  7. This is no criticism of a wonderfull quote.

Marty, your blog is becoming more spiritual/phylosophical in nature. I love it.

    – Ta-tu said: “Those who already have good roots will understand this kind of talk the moment they hear it.”
I understood the talk immediately. It describes the first time I did LRH’s training drill OT-TRO. Such are good roots.

  9. I am currently practicing meditation everyday.

That is true that our afflictions arise from our thoughts.

When meditating, I can observe the power of this thought factory I have that is working automatically and is feeding me tirelessly with no-solicited thoughts and emotions.

Meditation allows being less effect of unwanted thoughts, is dissolving automaticities, improves the tone level.

Scientology is dissolving mental charge by exploring the past, that is “negative processing” as it is based on the removal of unwanted factors.
Meditation is directing our attention fully in present time. That is positive processing, as it increases our ability to master our mind, thoughts and emotions.

The benefits of meditation are gradually accumulating. That is slow but secure and in solo.

The question is to know whether there can be a synergy between Scientology and Buddhist techniques.

In my opinion that is possible to have both, as actually I have had wins from both Scientology and Buddhism, as they address different areas of case.

    Brilliant.

  11. Nice touch, teachings for the lotus whose flowers grow above the level of the water.

  12. Oh yeah… the definition of static. It comes easy for some but not so for others. Yet, it is where we all come from.

  13. actually above the level of the swump 😉

  15. Very wise words. That’s all I have to add… 😉

  16. Thanks for that, mark.

In Russian, the word for “evil” is the same word as the word for “anger”.

    “Zlo” = anger, evil

  17. “Scientology is dissolving mental charge by exploring the past, that is “negative processing” as it is based on the removal of unwanted factors.”

There is much much more to Scientology than that ,

  18. Mystical symbolism of the lotus flower are derived from the fact that it is able to emerge from murky waters in the morning and be perfectly clean, the flower always looks clean and pure against the background of a dirty pond. http://www.LotusFlowerMeaning.net/

When I was a teenager I learned a mystical symbolism of the of lotus flower: to keep being spiritually clean and enlightened in spite of being surrounded by a turbid environment. (Thereafter, during my life, I use it as one of my guiding lights).

This is one of the teachings of this blog post.

Furthermore, this is the way I see Marty: Sometimes he looks mad as hell, because he is handling a lot of Co$’s entheta (the dirty environment). By doing so, he is enlightening people, and putting them on a path of becoming spiritually clean. But, at the same time he is keeping himself spiritually enlightened and clean: just ask Mosey or anybody who have stayed with them some days.

  19. oh man Sherb,
You are really really something (nothing).

  20. I love the Buddha quote about anger!

However, I have trouble with the Ta-Tu quote because I feel thoughts are dynamic and lead to achievement. Perhaps I’ve misunderstood …

  21. Very true. We all create our own case, so who else can be responsible for uncreating it?

The quote from the Buddha reminds me of LRH’s observation (in HOM) that anger and similar emotions stick a being into their body.

  22. It’s absolutley OK to be (look) angry from time to time. Even the Buddhists do not encourage a suppression of ones emotions. It’s just not healthy to be controlled by emotions all the time.

  23. Thanks for your full explanation of the symbolism by the way. Yes, this is how I was thought the concept, too.

  24. ~ taught ~
    (spelling again, sorry)

  25. Have to agree with Karen 1; these little tidbits you are inserting, Marty, are
just wonderful and can be very thought provoking. There are thousands
of correlations to what LRH wrote and lectured that totally validates all his
research. Only thing is that Ron was way ahead of his time.
Personally I had earthshaking wins just from the first process I received
(ARC St Wire). I mean tangible OT wins, demonstrated in the physical
universe over and over but of course I did not even try.

  26. Excellent way to start this evening.
This morning while constructing our meditation hall, the work went faster while holding minfullness in a meditation posture. Each board cut and placed brings a
joy. While installing the insulation, the devas playing a trick, jammed my staple gun. The recovery was swift and no anger resulted.
May all beings be well and happy!

  27. I’d have to agree with you RD. In Dianetics 55 LRH describes the true definition of zero as “an actuality of no mass, no wavelength, no position in space or relation in time, but with the quality of creating or destroying mass or energy, or locating itself or creating space, and in re-locating time.” In my own words I’d have to say that this basically means a static has no significance except that which he places on something…no name, no body, no case, no track, no pain, no ills, no car, no house, no mind, and even no anger. It only has potential or ability…which is the quality that creates and controls space, energy, etc. I don’t know about you, but doing OT TRO is about as close as I have ever gotten to that pure potential state of just being.
“Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” I think some who study this quote might take it to mean one must be passive thus allowing oneself to be the effect of another (after all “I’m angry at the other person so they must have done something to make me angry so that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to be angry so I won’t be the effect”). The truth as I see it is by not holding on to the anger one is to that degree getting back to that “zero state”, as I will call it, where one is pure potential and can create space. In actuality assigning any significance to anger is the only thing that makes it solid and the only reason one would be the effect at all, so not holding on to it allows one to operate as ones true self.

  28. Well, I certainly think someone must be having a bad day, not liking the comments and all …

  29. Yes, and I think that the anger topic introduced by Marty in such a subtle way has such great potential for discussion. In fact, I was looking at some excellent new research the other day. This anger issue was obvious 2,600 years at the time of the Buddha, and can still be analyzed today.
    GMW

  30. Interesting. Thanks Marty.

  31. OSA always has a bad day. 🙂
I like the Buddha quote as well.

  32. Self Analysis is a wonderful book which for me was very practical.
Meditation is a wonderful new surprise.

‘So we had to get out of quantitative thinking, thinking in terms of objects and masses, before we had any real comprehension of existence. And this was very easy to do. Very easy to do. You merely had to define what zero was. And we find that life, basically the awareness of awareness unit in life, is not a thing of quantity – not even vaguely of quantity. It is a thing of quality, of ability. Where you have ability, you have life. Where you have space, energy, mass…I don’t care what kind of energy. The energy contained in your engrams. The energy contained in mental pictures. The space contained in your visios or lack of them. Anytime you have any quantity of any kind, you have walked downhill from life. Just like that And this works out. This works out in processing, works out gorgeously. – L. Ron Hubbard, Awareness of Awareness, 1 December 1954

  34. Excellent post about the lotus. On my desk now a book contained the following words of the Buddha:

“As a lotus fair and lovely,
By the water is not soiled,
    By the world am I not soiled;
    Therefore, Brahmin, am I Buddha.”
    Narada, page 39

  35. Oooo! That’s a good one too! 🙂

  36. Wholeheartedly agree, OT TR0/TR0 does this for me as well, makes me want to sit down and do a good round of it again, its truly a beautiful state.

  37. Okay, okay – I’m about convinced. (I’m thinking about letting go of my anger. It -is- kinda poisonous.)

  38. Insightful quotation, Marty.
You know I have found some new ideas based on this foundation.
Take western economics, for example. What a joke!
1,000 cases of beer add to a quantity which is part of GDP.
However, a certain percent of consumption ends in DUI and
other violence. The western economist sees only quantity.
    Growth? Total nonsense.

  39. Qualities of Theta/Spirit/Soul/Life as taught liberated souls: Bliss unending, Joy unending, Love unending, Existence unending, Awareness unending, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient. Ever Free!!!!!!

The Ocean is the substance of all waves (individualized existence) on it’s surface but the Ocean is not dependent on waves for it’s existence. The waves on the other hand are dependent on the Ocean (Theta,God, Buddhahood, Enlightenment, Full OT, The Supreme Uncreated Absolute) for their existence.

  40. I noticed the same thing a couple of threads ago. I think it’s akin to the phenomena to one of those holes in the plywood barriers at construction sites in the city where the sign says “don’t look ” = there’s a button there to be pressed but it’s negative…
Go figure… there’s a human on the loose!

  41. Really good quote Marty! I especially like this: “The moment you produce a thought, it is an object; just don’t have a single thought, and objects disappear, so mind dies out spontaneously, and there is nothing more to pursue.”

To my way of thinking, he is referring to compulsively making mental image pictures and then relying on them. When they are gone, one is no longer encumbered with all that mental baggage and one is free to reason clearly and fully focus intention, the veil lifts and truth and life shines bright and clear.

And the Buddha quote — its so true! Anger may or may not affect another but it sure wreaks havoc in you! And when you add it to your last post on the intention experiment and the water experiments, it really isn`t a very workable or useful way of healing or handling oneself, others, or the environment. It all comes down to intention.

  42. Present Moment Reminders from Eckhart Tolle (21st Century)

The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.

Somebody, I don’t recall who, once said: “When you get there, there’s no there there”. This applies not only to location in space, but also to time: when you get to the future, you find yourself in the present moment. So the future never comes. Don’t let the thought of future (or past) obscure the preciousness of the present moment.

its utterly remarkable . Its to do with his period of inprisonrment.Another is the Truth about Disease by John Bannerman.

  49. I think people who hold on to anger are afraid to let go of it. It is taboo in certain cultures to be angry because a lot of people are uncomfortable with forces. The people get sneaky in those cultures. The sanest cultures I have found are the ones that can live with forces and let the anger out instantly and then move on. It is always best to have the conversation right then and there. Because otherwise you find yourself sitting in an auditing room having the conversation anyway at a later date. This was the core of my auditing on L12. All of the conversations I thought would never become possible, became possible. I realized that is what was really happening. That was my success story. Since then I have not put a conversation on hold. My advice is if you do not want to hold on to anger, when that force arises inside of you, just let it go. Have the conversation right now. Force is not a bad thing. It is a magical thing. It is in the wind and rain and connected to the elements. Get elemental on the spot.

  50. Yeah right, all those DBs/SPs by whom he is surrounded.

  52. “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”

Thank you for the quote. I did not know it and that sounds very true. The attempt to harm another person is actually harming the one who is angry.

I noticed that meditation is very efficient to dissolve anger. Provided I meditate about 15 minutes in the morning, that is protecting me from anger and other negative emotions during the day.

Before practicing meditation, I was prone to be angry when I was annoyed by something. All that is gone.

GIFTS OF UNKNOWN THINGS: : A True Story of Nature, Healing, and Initiation from Indonesia’s Dancing Island
    published 1976 by Lyall Watson

Dr. Lyall Watson (born April 12, 1939) is a botanist, zoologist, biologist, anthropologist, ethologist, and author of many books, among the most popular of which is the best seller Supernature. Lyall Watson
tries to make sense of natural and supernatural phenomena in biological terms. He is credited with the first published use of the term “Hundredth Monkey” in his 1979 book, Lifetide.

Dr. Watson was born in South Africa and passed on in 2008 in Australia.

“Dancing is surely the most basic and relevant of all forms of expression. Nothing else can so effectively give outward form to an inner experience. Poetry and music exist in time. Painting and architecture are a
part of space. But only the dance lives at once in both space and time. In it the creator and the thing created, the artist and the expression, are one. Each participates completely in the other. There could be
no better metaphor for an understanding of the mechanics of the cosmos.”

― Lyall Watson, Gifts of Unknown Things: A True Story of Nature, Healing, and Initiation from Indonesia’s Dancing Island

“We try to abolish intervals by our manic insistence on keeping busy, on doing something. And as a result, all we succeed in doing is destroying all hope of tranquility.
… . You have to learn to immerse yourself in the silences between.”

“If you simply walk on the beach as we are doing, you have no special color. But if you travel with a purpose, it is different. When you go somewhere important or you return home from a long journey, you build
a shape around you and it reaches out ahead to touch your destination.”

Watson also comments on the ideas of a physicist named David Bohm, who created a new description of reality he called “the enfolded order”:

According to Newtonian physics, an object can be tracked over time, moving through space. This assumes that it is the same object that moves from place to place.

Bohm suggests that the object does not move, but is created again in each new position; each time it “unfolds”
and reappears, its form is generally similar, but there are differences in detail. Our description of an object, what we like to think of as objective reality, is an appearance that is abstracted from a hidden (or in any case, unseen) flow.

Buddhism, anyone? How about Theta/MEST Theory?

“No unfolded object has an independent, substantial existence in it’s own right, but depends on the folded order for its form.”

“Anything that can be seen or heard or handled by scientific instruments, is an abstraction unfolded from the invisible, inaudible, intangible ground of all matter.”

“….And everything, the whole of existence, can be seen to have its origins in a single source – universal life energy.”

This book is the vivid story of his prolonged stay on this remote east Indonesian island, and a religious drama that unfolded there, between those followed the “old (animist) ways” and a Mullah who was a severe literal-minded Islamist.
    I highly recommend this book!

Ahhhh…. Therein lies the conundrum. Does one wish to pursue life by exiting it? (an impossibility) or does one pursue life by engaging it?

It will be found that 20 on the tone scale is the point of departure of these two quests. As one moves down the tone scale from 20 one is becoming more and more solid and less and less theta. One is leaving the game by becoming MEST. As one moves above 20 on the tone scale he is again moving more and more away from life. He is moving toward becoming total static.

It seems that “LIFE” at its best is created at around 20. 20 also appears to be the stated goal of Ethics and the Dynamics. It also appears to be the purpose of Theta as laid out in the Factors.

For me, at this point, 20 on the tone scale is my target. Optimum survival across the Dynamics…. I do not use the philosophies and technologies of Scientology to help me get out of the game, I use them with the hopes of gradiently being better able to play life optimally.

To extract oneself from the game of life before one has ever really played it to the max seems to be an awful waste of all the time spent since inception and all the time to eternity.

But each to his/her own non?

    Eric
