John Brousseau

Tony Ortega at the Village Voice has published a comprehensive interview with John “JB” Brousseau, see JB VV interview, part one, and part two.   JB told me that he was impressed with Tony’s ability to get all that level of detail out of JB and communicate it in such an un-embellished fashion.  It is quite a story.

For those who were not following the blog in mid 2010, we covered JB’s escape from the Int base directly to my home in Texas.  We also covered the extraordinary measures Miscavige took in hunting down and attempting to apprehend JB for re-imprisonment before he could speak:

1. Great interview, it does fill in some blank spots, which when one is still in is never discussed. The multi viewpoint system works really well – great bit of reporting by Tony Ortega and JB for coming out with his story.

2. Read it this morning waiting for the next update from Marty. Very real first hand and fascinating stories about JB’s life within, insightful and incredible recounts working directly with LRH, Miscavige’s nut cracker attitudes, antics w/Tom Cruise… et al. Great stuff JB!!

Now I gotta go read the links Marty put up.

3. Marty, you have helped many! I saw Tony’s post early this morning and it’s a fascinating read. I still hope Tom finds his way out of this labyrinth and Misgavige is brought to justice. The airways and internet are flooded with articles on all related subjects and it seems to be expanding exponentially. You are frequently quoted. Hopefully we will hear from Migavige’s father at some point. Just wanted to ack that yes, we say it here first! JB seems like a super nice being!

4. martyrathbun09

Yes he is, and as you can probably tell from Tony’s narrative JB is about as level-headed as they come.

5. JB truely a great interview. It filled in many blanks for me. It was wonderful hearing about LRH from your viewpoint. Thank you JB and Tony for making this available for reading enjoyment. ML, Jan

6. Anon, on your side

I don’t understand why COS and its PIs haven’t been prosecuted for violating state and federal laws regarding mail and wire fraud.  You have posted numerous stories of OSA operatives obtaining phone and email records by hacking and by pretending to be the individual.  During the 2008 HP scandal, the PIs hired by HP were charged under the California Penal Code with 1. Conspiracy to commit crimes in violation of Sections 182(a)(1). 2. Fraudulent use of wire, radio, or television transmissions in violation of Section 538.5. 3. Taking, copying, and using computer data in violation of Section 502(c)(2) and   4. Using personal identifying information without authorization in violation of Section 530.5(a).  Isn’t this routine for OSA?  There are similar federal laws that OSA has broken.  In this time of heightened prosecution for identity theft and computer fraud, can anyone explain why the COS has not been charged?

7. Anon, on your side

Sorry, meant to say 2006 HP scandal

8. JB calls miscavige the anti-Christ.
TC worships miscavige like a god.
I’m so happy that my money went to good use.

9. Thank you so much for the communication, John. I can’t wait for part two.

Your comparison of miscavige to the anti-Christ, is in my opinion spot on.

In speaking to a couple of active auditors who trained under LRH on the VIII course on the Apollo, one thing stood out to them more than anything. It was LRHs total focus on auditing being “for the PC’s own gain.” Despite everything that was going on organizationally his hat as a C/S was always to figure out the best way to free a being and get that into the line up of Standard Tech. Personally, I think he did a friggin great job with that.

Miscavige, by his actual actions, has demonstrated himself to be exactly the opposite. Marty’s book explains many of the details of how miscavige accomplishes this reverse-scientology/black-dianetics.

Narcississtic, sociopathic, suppressive. Adjectives totally suitable to miscavige.

How could this happen? How such a monster “take charge?”

There was no policy laid out or data in the PTS S/P series on what you do if your seniors are S/Ps and all of their juniors are PTS.

10. George — he actually more appropriately calls him the anti-Hubbard.

11. What a great article, and the related blog posts are simply riveting.

I just want to say how much I admire John for his courage in the years leading up to his escape. In his own universe, he made the conscious choice to follow LRH, instead of The Midget. The fact that he stayed on, and helped his fellow staff members through application of the tech, and simple human kindness and compassion, says much about his worth. This is what greatness is made of.

Thank you, Marty, for planting a seed with John that eventually grew into vital realizations and a profound sense of honor and integrity. Thank you also for being there for him when he needed you most. Of all that we may do out here, helping our friends in their hour of escape, is perhaps the most important.

12. Love you JB. Great article. Well done. Hugs and kisses to you and your young family!

13. holy crap, this stuff just keeps getting stranger.

the part that was pleasing to hear was when Ron met with the people he yelled at and made it good.

Boy, poor Miscavige really needs meds. An insane person running Scientology.

Some weird ass karma

Yet, it was the Chinese that spread the Tibetan Buddhism world wide.

It was Judas that singularly opened the door for that great Christ to be known

And David Miscavige is freeing Scientology from oppressive central control.

I guess in this world of duality we need the dark to help contrast the light.

what a story

14. I loved the article in the Voice. Such great stories. It was kind of like reading a thriller. Can’t wait for part two. JB, thank God you made it out of there in one piece!

15. Wow JB, I truly enjoyed reading the article. I could not walk away without finishing it…truly a thriller!!! Looking forward to the next part!!!

16. Mike, yes, miscavige is, I think, also anti-social. I remember how little he spoke when we met. Wonder if he had an urge to punch me?
miscavige the great pugilist.

George M. White

17. Great article. John Brousseau does a great job of depicting life in the Sea Org and the various posts he held at Int over the years. Tony Ortega really captured the spirit and character of the man known simply as “JB”. Good job Tony and JB!

Part two has got to be a barnburner!

18. Excellent narrative, JB. Lays out the whole story with enough detail and corroboration that you really get the picture on what went down. And Miscavige does not look good in that picture. Tony O writes it well. So well I really don’t want to make any sniping comments about a few things such things as Jon Attack’s book. Instead, I’ll just look forward to part two.

19. Thanks JB 🙂

I’ll post this around and link further.

20. Transporter

Great article! It astounds me with the level of and continued heaping of abuse on loyal senior staff. Slightly off track but parallel to this issue I saw Mary Vogeding, (spelling?) who at one time was President FSO and handled celeb’s at Flag, pumping gas into a fork-lift this morning at a 7-11 just 2 blocks from the Fort Harrison. She looks very beaten-up and broken. What could she have done that was so bad to be pushed down that far. I knew Mary way back when and she originated a “Hello” and we joked about gas millage, etc with the fork-lift. I read JB’s account about the Int Base and it blows me away that the corporate public never have a hint of what is taking place.

21. Wonder if he had an urge to punch me? miscavige the great pugilist.

He once huffed at me. But I was a public guy. No way he’d take a swing at me.

22. Great story JB. I knew some of it but not all of it and I found it very interesting and very educational. You don’t mince your words!

23. As JB successfully conveys, it is very, very well hidden from public – very, very deliberately hidden, right down to swapping vans and secret confabs at public phone booths. So well hidden and covered up that there isn’t even a reason to think of looking.

This is why it is so valuable to have these ex SO staff and executives reveal the truth. It is really and truly the only way public Scientologists ever learn about any of this.

In my case, it was the reports of Geir Isene and the reports of Marty Rathbun taken together that gave me enough information to understand what the hell had been going on, hidden from view. Enough for me to understand that it wasn’t just isolated instances of inexperienced or poorly trained or overloaded staff.

It was impossible for me to ignore first hand reports from an OT8 and the ex International Justice Chief, which confirmed my own limited observations, especially when backed up by hundreds more individual reports confirming what they said. I was willing to be tolerant of hard-working, well-intended, overloaded and poorly trained staff but NOT deliberate and intentional acts ordered and enforced by senior management riding on fancy motorcycles and dining on caviar. I liked those staff members. They did not deserve this and while I know that supporting this whistle blowing makes their lives even more hellish, I cannot see any other way than to just keep supporting the exposure of truth, even if it is merely posting on blogs like this to keep them alive and growing in popularity.

24. To go from the Pres of Flag to pumping gas, what on earth! Transporter, you should start taking pictures when you see something like that. What a commentary that would make to put the pics side by side; one when she was Pres and now pumping gas. Or maybe instead of taking a picture, offer her a ride to freedom.

25. And I just gotta say, boy am I glad I blew Scientology in 87. What you all have had to put up with!

I hope all of this dark tale transmutes into some greater future for the Independents.

Keep helping people with Scientology. Be that spiritual force.

Love, smiles and realizations the essential stat. Then how could the world not embrace benevolent use of Scientology.

You have a lot of work to salvage PR.

With love and service as the goal, how can you not succeed. Happiness: the only result.

And man, has it ever come far from what it once was.

DM, you are one looney toon twisted meat monkey!

26. scilonschools

Excellent bit of light into DM’s DARK cave. (I hear most terrorist end up in a cave at sometime in their career)

27. JB, thanks so much for doing this interview. It’s excellent. 🙂

And for those who have not yet read those earlier MOU 2010 posts Marty linked to in his OP, they are SO worth your time to read them. The cult went insane when JB escaped, and their shenaningans read like Curly, Moe and Larry chases Jason Bourne across the United States. That was when I finally understood just how freaked out the cult was about the Independent Movement.

BTW, I think there’s a hilarious recorded phone conversation between Marty and Curly or Moe (I forget which one) on one of those links.

JB,

What you’ve described regarding this ‘POB thing’ is a failure to reign in and domesticate a rabid hyena. Ain’t going to happen’. Right?

I’ve concluded LRH wanted to send a message far and wide regarding this type of being.

Isn’t that what he stated as a goal in the early 50’s and even the late 40’s?

Miscavige is such an “in your face” example of an anti-social being.

Perhaps there’s a much deeper and universal lesson we’re to perceive and even learn.

29. +100,000,000

30. Transporter

To Pat: EXCELLENT IDEA! I saw a Mary a month before in Publix in Downtown Clearwater and was surprised to see her in Flag Crew work clothes. Today blew me a away! Next time I’ll snap a pic. Thanx for the idea!

31. Thank you so much JB for speaking out. I have been wondering about you, and to hear your story and revisit the posts from Marty about you, is another enlightening piece to the scene. What I truly appreciate is how you made your way out, thru all the insanities you were faced with, and maintained your Code of Honor and personal integrity. Good for you!

32. +1. Well said.

33. Transporter, Is this Mary Shaw?

34. Me too! I love the way VV wrote it too. I’m chomping at the bit for part two!
Awesome of you to share all this history Mr. Brousseau. Thank you.

35. Incredible article. I have admittidaly been a tad bored by the blogs on this website, but this one has got my radar way onwar and upward. Thanks JB for blowing thru, one’s like us the Summer blues,

36. Wow! I didn’t know that before!

38. eileenclark101

I like the idea of offering a ride out of Dodge. Probably, as a result of being named on here she will be put under wraps and not allowed out alone again.

39. Transporter

Just to clarify…Mary is still SO and today she was in Flag Crew work clothes filling the tank in the fork-lift. When Lisa-Marie was at Flag Mary was always at a private table with her. Mary was on VIP comm lines and today to see her doing grunt work was a mind-blower.

40. eileenclark101

JB,
Excellent job! Your story needed to be told like this and it will add to the pile of evidence against that dimunitive sociopathic anti-Hubbard piece of crap.
I am so glad you are out and enjoying your life so much now.

41. Transporter,
“… it blows me away that the corporate public never have a hint of what is taking place.”
One reason for sure is, that if you as a SO member let any “bad PR” reach the public, then you are toast. Punishment, “ethics” and “justice” handling are following on the spot – it’s like as if you would have perpetrated a felony. And god forbid making “COB look bad” – you never can make up for it.

42. JB,
Thank you for speaking out and describing it all so accurately! – Karola

43. How could anyone call JB an “bitter, defrocked apostate”? There is so much intelligence, compassion and pure sense in his way of telling things. JB is REAL which is the impression I always had of him. Still remember the one day in the early 90’s when JB took me and my ex-wife out to a canyon near San Jacinto and taught me how to shoot a rifle. In the end I managed to hit a small rock across the canyon – JB was a good teacher! Hope to see you again one day!

44. KA and Eileenclark: Thanks for your viewpoints.
Bela: I think she did remarry and had a last name as Shaw. Marty should be able to verify.

45. Quite a shock to hear about Mary. She has been on staff from the beginning. Truly a personal friend of Hubbard’s. But who have you seen to rise up in the shadow of David Miscavige? He is a virus that works hep C. He connects to people and their immune system fails.

46. Boredom is a good tone level. It is higher than antagonistic.

47. JB,
Your detail-rich recounting is going farther than you realize… it’s opened eyes beyond just those who’ve spoken out here on this blog. I am eager to read part 2. So many gaps filled in.

The story of Miscavige’s nasty role in LRH/MSH relationship was particularly meaningful to me. Evidently Mary Sue had an understanding of what kind of character Miscavige was. Pity that her vulnerability led to her submitting and succumbing to Miscavige’s conniving.

On the flip side of things, your are an amazing craftsman, tinkerer, and artist! Wish I had the money to hire you to come do a do a few projects at my place! You should be able to command a high price for your level of expertise, problem-solving, and artistry.

48. Dizzy Mizz Lizzy

I am just an ordinary public in a far off land, who during all my years as a Scientologist firmly believed that all was well with Scientology and that anyone opposing it was just uninformed or an SP. At all the events I went to, David Miscavige had me convinced that he was GOD Almighty – or at least a godsend – and that under his magnificent leadership Scientology was taking over the whole world.

This last year searching the internet in search of the truth has been one hell of a severe reality adjustment! It is just too unbelievable to to try and fathom the real scene. I cannot grasp how I have been conned and cheated and lied to. I cannot grasp that in reality I was a member of a freakin cult whose sole purpose was to brainwash me enough to hand over all my money – not to save the planet – but to enrich itself and furnish David Miscavige with a lavish, over the top lifestyle. And that anyone opposing this would be persecuted by the church and by all means brought to silence.
Thank God many escaped and survived to tell the story.
And thank God I woke up and read about it!

49. Yes, without the dark we could not see the light.

50. Li'll bit of stuff

+10 Sinar!

51. Li'll bit of stuff

The complete irony of all this, Marty, is that the
increasingly dysfunctional, diminutive dwarf, davey, has spared no effort in actually accelerating his
own demise and departure, with his hand made
“supremely proud” creation the “Church” of (ugh!)
Miscavology! ( and it’s thoroughly betrayed,fleeced,
and now hopelessly confused sheeple, his addicted “Miscavigeoholics.”

Only one valid piece of advice, to said “sheeple”
“Get out now,if you are able to read this at all!!”

52. Good for you to wake up and don’t worry about hellish lives because of whistle blowing. To the contrary, a hellish life comes about from not doing so; whistle blowing is the remedy and restores a fulfilling life.

53. Jim Jarrof and his wife Kelley are great people, I hope they make it out.

54. Fascinating interview. The fishing trip to Lake Hemet gave a real insight into Miscavige’s case. He so badly wanted (needed) to jump in the lake and shove the hook down the fishes throats that he was actually shaking. That tells us he is compelled to control not only his own actions but those of his prey, and that he must do so with force. Unable to dramatize that force, he goes bonkers.

Apparently he considers the Int staff to also be prey, that likewise must be controlled with force.

55. OUTSTANDING – ARTICLE – I check your site daily to see what is happening and the hits just keep on comin. Miscavige has to be resembling Gary Oldman in your video. SOOOOOOO EXCELLENT.

56. Also, what is interesting is that, supposedly, Tommy Davis’ wife is very ill. I was wondering how many people in this “regime” are fairing physically. To live this way has to effect one physically and I wondered how many people are actually becoming ill with serious illnesses.

57. John Brousseau, as usual, matter of fact, poignant and compelling.

Tony Ortega, you really should get in touch with the poster here, and elsewhere named Margaret. Between JB’s first hand observations, you interlard some of the silliest rumor and “Elvis has a baby that he’s married and actually is” that is “out there”.

Still, at least Tony Ortega has the bollocks to write something, to be there and communicate. Now, if you’d take the time to follow up on Margaret’s superb work, well, then you’d have something…

58. The link “PI’s going after JB” is not right. It leads me to the page where I have to enter a username and password.

59. Mary is now married Ben Shaw.

60. Like in theWizard of OZ discovering what is behind the curtain.
If there was a multiple choice test about Int Management at Gold Base
I would flunk it completely because the real truth would be so bizzare
and unthinkable you would never imagine. The least plausible, rational, possible answers would be the correct answers.

61. One thing more on Davis’ wife. I understand she is now in a hospital – it would be interesting to hear the conversation with Davis and the doctors who would be telling him if you had brought her here at the outset, we could have saved her or prolonged her life. Doctors will not be able to hide their disgust at the stupidity of using vitamins and the like to cure cancer. Just incredible. Leukimia is not a death sentence anymore if it gets treated.

62. ToryMagoo44 has a great message on Youtube. Her latest where she speaks directly to Tom Cruise and the disconnection of families and how he is representing an organization that imposes disconnection. She starts with his saying that “his family has helped get through this time”. Then she goes on to say what if you never had one, etc.”

It is a great read and needs to be passed on. Just fyi.

63. I just read part two of the Village Voice interview.

John, if you are reading this, I get it about chasing the “almighty dollar”. I am glad you are taking care of business. Just want to let you know, you can have it all. That is more than will ever be possible for David Miscavige.

64. JB, thank you for being there and communicating. You are filling in so many gaps for me.

BTW Marty, when mighty we hear more from Sarge?

65. On what basis do you make this comment? Do you have some inside information concerning her status? Or that she didnt get medical treatment as soon as her condition was discovered? Or that she hasnt recovered? My son had cancer. He is in the Sea Org. He was treated medically and recovered. Believe me, I am as anti the RCS as you can get, but this generality, based on presumably no information, doesnt accomplish anything. I hope Jessica has dully recovered and she and Tommy are living in peace somewhere. They are not inherently evil people — they did evil things, but they removed themselves from the scene in whatever fashion. Some compassion for them would be more helpful than disdain and disgust IMO.

66. Tango — spot on.

67. I think you must be mistaking her for someone else. A “personal friend” of Hubbard’s? Not this Mary Shaw (formerly married to Peter Voegeding).

68. Theo Sismanides

John Brousseau, we all read the story. A span of 32 years of service in the SO. You started up high and were always next to key players and a key player yourself.

I was amazed by the Freewinds restoration. Was quite a feat. I wish you well and happiness for you and your family.

69. To M. Rinder:

I apologize if I gave the impression that I have no compassion for Jessica . I have disgust for a life that may be lost for no reason. I may be wrong about her health going down. I am getting it only from the internet. Allegedly, she has been ill for sometime. I hope she is getting better. But from what I am reading she is in the last stages of leukimia and is now seeking treatment – treatment that if it had been sought at the outset would have most likely helped her tremendously.
Again, if I am wrong, I certainly apologize.

70. Just finished reading VV articles I and II… It was riveting and hope it gets picked up broadly by other media following C of S.

JB, from all I read and heard about you, you are one amazing guy. Thank you so much for sharing your stories and helping us become more and more enlightened!

Re Mary… She is now married to Ben Shaw, and was formerly married to Peter Voegeding. I know Mary very well, and as she tells the story, i got her into Scientology. She and I met in 1973 at an oil company we worked at in Los Angeles and soon became very close friends. I had just come off staff in Miami as a D of P and moved to LA to be near the AO. She had some problems, I had Scientology tech to offer as solutions and that brought us close together.

Mary is a wonderfully caring and extremely competent person with a great sense of humor! And it bothers me to no end to see how beaten down she has become. I love her dearly and keep hoping she will one day see the light, hoping (maybe naively) she’s reading this blog… But, I strongly believe I will get that call from her one day, asking for help. Knowing Mary, she will be overwhelmed with tears of joy when she learns how many people love and care about her and would be lining up to help her!

Marsha

71. Lisa Hamilton

Hey JB, I read all of the article from start to finish. VERY nice! I am so glad to see you are doing well and that you are happy and have such a beautiful family! You certainly know how to set your goals and attain them. Lots of love, Lisa

72. “..”It was atrocious. People were getting busted out of RTC and sent to the OGH all the time. You had to admit that you were a Suppressive Person. And you had to admit that anything you had ever done in your life was crap. Then you could reeducate yourself as a real human being. That started with stupid courses on stuff like personal grooming, how to tie your shoes,” he says…”

Can you admit you are a suppressive person???

73. Jean-François Genest

JB is a classy person indeed. Very good interview and very specifically detailed. I hope the “news world” and current Scientologists, under the radar or not, will take notice of all he did for TC, for free, and at the expense of Scientology parishioners and others.

• My paternal grandmother, Antoinette Brousseau, turns 100 years old next September 7. JB and I might be genealogically related 🙂

74. “Miscavige is such an “in your face” example of an anti-social being.

Perhaps there’s a much deeper and universal lesson we’re to perceive and even learn.”

Very good. I’ve contemplated the same.

Perhaps this entire saga as a practical real-life drill on learning how to spot sociopaths, and handling them. Hopefully, this gained awareness and ability to spot and stop the real sociopaths gets applied to other 3rd dynamic groups, too, such as the U.S. federal government, who has enslaved and robbed The People via the central bank called the Federal Reserve (FED).

I do find it frustratingly difficult for good people to rid sociopaths such as David Miscavige. I want to end this tiring cycle already. I am so ready for the wider peripheral game of eliminating totalitarianism altogether on the 4th dynamic, not just inside the dinky corporate Scientology organization.

Clearly, having the ability to spot real sociopaths in this world and stop them in their tracks will transform this world to a much, much, much better place quite quickly.

75. Good for you, Lizzy. I hear you loud and clear. The scope of the betrayal of David Miscavige is incomprehensible for most people to understand who never had the huge worthy goal of a world without insanity, criminality, and war.

76. I just read part two. Quite a damning piece against David Miscavige and the Church of Scientology.

I did notice however that toward the end of the article JB slights the Indies as a group by saying, “I’m not going to drag all this shit around with me.” It makes me wonder… does he still consider himself a Scientologist?

77. Hell of a story, and a clinic on how to leave Int – with a pile of incriminating pictures. Well done, JB!

On a side note, I am pissed off at Tony O. I am really glad he did a great job with this story, but I am pissed Tony is so single-tracked with it comes to Scientology, and yet he has no idea what it is. I am referring to this article:

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2012/07/scientology_xenu_whole_track.php?ref=trending

This guy reports on Scientology for, what, 10+ years and he is surprised that people go whole track when they are audited? I mean this is such an incredible miss I am, frankly, dumbfounded. How could you not get this unless you were so enamored with the weird that you took NO effort to understand the subject of your ridicule. In the same article he references the “proof” Inside Edition did “debunking” the e-meter.

I am astounded. This is like writing about Christians for 10 years and not “getting” that they believe Jesus was resurrected.

To me, Tony has descended to the level of a useful idiot. I am happy he did a great job on JB’s story, but he has no credibility with me in any other way when it comes to Scientology. He doesn’t even try.

78. JB,

Thanks for the narrative. You are one cool cat, and a he** of an artist, craftsman and executive. With you gone, the church is indeed “dead”.
I wish you and your family a bright and successful future.

TF

79. JB, I am very happy for you and your new life, family and prospects. Your story always intrigued me and it was great to have all those extra details filled in with your VV interview. I really admire your talent and analytical abilities.

80. Thomas More

Amazing story. Fills in and dovetails with other data. I hope someone is seriously writing the screenplay. Heartbreaking to read about Mary Sue.
As to one of the links, why does it require a WordPress login to read “PI’s going after JB”? So strange that Davis was waiting for him in Texas, after all John went through to evade.

81. martyrathbun09

Media will be media.

82. martyrathbun09

Sometimes it seems like a thankless job.

83. Wow! Part II was even more page-turning then Part I. I bet Miscavige won’t make the mistake of giving an iphone to a SO member again! Or any device that enables some one to get factual data. It occurred to me this morning after reading Part I that the crumbling remnants of DM’s little empire and its continuance is utterly dependent on ensuring nobody gets truthful info about the scene – apart from the brainwashed and the complicit. Anybody else when they realise, as John did, that the rest of the world knows all about the full horror of the asylum, will run, run, run like the wind.

84. JB, your daughter is beautiful! That was a good read and one that I’ll be reading again. I hope they piss you off again so you’ll release some more photos 😉

85. threefeetback

JB,
I assume you keep at least occasional tabs on this blog. Having known you for several years, you are a class act, true blue, and meet your own description of ‘just a regular dude’. Great job on getting out your matter-of-fact story out. The Third Dynamic noose around the anti-Hubbard’s neck is getting very, very ….. TIGHT. You out-created the prick, up close and personal, like few others. Pardon my lack of semicolons, and best wishes on your current and future adventures.

86. JB,
You are an incredible guy with an incredible story.
My wife guesses that you still have quite a bit of ammo on dm. I would have to agree.
Thanks for getting the word out and helping those still trapped within.

87. I remember JB and Sinar and a couple more who breezed through the EPF at Clearwater course room, on their their way “over the rainbow” in 1979.

What a strange period that was, with the old Commodore’s Staff Aides and Flag Bureaux staff being top management, while LRH was off.

There was a power vacuum that went with LRH, and the admin structures struggling to carry on.

That 8 years was about as tumultuous (up and down) as any in Scientology history, 1979-1986 when LRH died.

There is just so much incredible depth to the history of the movement that plays into everyone’s stories.

So great to hear JB’s story.

Even though I’m not a Scientologist, I was one involved with admin for so long, it just never goes away out of my brain.

JB exemplifies the Service policy letter, his motivations were clearly for service to the movement (which got so warped by Miscavige, leaving was the obvious choice).

LRH in Volume 0, page 512, said in 1971 SERVICE policy letter:

“….Certain it is that degradation is inevitable when the Right to Serve is interrupted or denied.”

“It is worth thinking about in relation to happiness.”

All the execs in the hole status, are being degraded by being denied their right to serve.

That most astounded me in my various sort of visitor times at the Int Base (1983-84, sporadically 85-87, 89-92, then 94-96).

It was astounding to see people who were not in it for the money, being so randomly mistreated and who really were doing it for just like JB lays out.

Anyways, just making the Int Base staff restudy t OEC Vol 0, would instantly reform the movement.

Scientology’s solution is written all over even the green volumes, if they just got a chance to do it.

LRH’s hopes that RTC would succeed in enforcing KSW has been a failure.

Miscavige is playing all the negative keys on the LRH policy piano, over and over, degrading and violating the RTC charter.

JB is one of the dozens of unheralded Sea Org members who should’ve been awarded Kha Kahn.

Awards and rewards are gone and when Miscavige finally goes, since LRH wrote what he wrote, those left, will turn to LRH’s writings.

The big Miscavige lesson, is don’t let a Miscavige do a takeover, but instead take the time to build WDC and Exec Strata, and make the Int Management Exec Council work.

it just takes time.

Years from now, when Scientology gets through the DM phase, they likely will be tiny, but they have a huge long runway of LRH’s writings to follow to rebuild..

Avoid Miscavige like domineering individuals, is the biggest lesson long term Sea Org members ought learn, from this Miscavige dominated era in Scientology history.

I guess religion history scholars will want to see just how strong LRH’s admin auto pilot rebuilding writings are, and what will happen.

Pat Broeker at LRH’s funeral is correct, and what he said is so important, were I in Scientology top leadership (nerd advisor).

Pat’s point is the tech is what LRH left Scientologists. There’s no replacement for LRH. It’s the tech and admin, and Int Coord Council, with RTC just only doing minimal tweaking and letting WDC and Exec Strata do the strategic stuff.

The LRH funeral event and Pat’s cautions ought be relistened to, by scholars taking note.

Thanks so much JB!

To Marsha Friedman: It’s sad w/ Mary Shaw. She’s was as tough as nails when she had to be but beyond that you’re absolutely correct…Mary is a very capable, sweet, caring individual. As I mentioned above it was heartbreaking to see her toiling with grunt work when she has so much to offer and to contribute but yet it’s all being thrown by the wayside. I have a feeling someday she’ll see the light. Just by people reading what’s been posted here I’m hoping postulates are flowing for her to find her way out! She deserves OUT and a better life!

89. Amazing story Jphn. DM is certainly the anti-Hubbard..I have a feeling you have many more pictures. I would love to see them.
I have to ack you for your incredible skills with your hands. You are a true artisan. And you know the tech of mowing a lawn, for christs sake!!!!!!

90. Oh yeah, in RCS you can! It’s one of the basic tricks to make criminals. Once you’ve lost your self respect, it doesn’t matter what you do, so you can do anything. The other trick is making others commit overts on a daily basis to keep them from ever regaining their self respect and act human again. Every successful Mob Boss, CIA trainer, Kingpin, Religious Tyrant, and Bankster uses those mechanisms.

91. Jim, “bollocks” are turds. Is that what you meant?

92. Was biting my tongue on that one (Atack book) too, Hadyn. But agree that other than that, thought the article was quite good.

93. Excellent suggestion about Margaret. Seems to be a great historian.

94. Thank god your purpose transcends such considerations, Marty.

95. “JB told me that he was impressed with Tony’s ability to get all that level of detail out of JB and communicate it in such an un-embellished fashion.”

99. In addition to what Mike said, it’s not always “stupidity” to use “vitamins and the like to cure cancer”. Saying that surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy (“cut, burn, and poison”) are the only treatments for cancer ignores a wealth of other effective treatments. Clearly allopathic or “mainstream” medicine has great value, but little attention is given to its casualties. To say it’s the only game in town is like saying psychiatry is the ONLY way to address emotional travail — in other words, flat-out wrong. Get your colon removed, or use Carnivora and other “alternative” modalities as Reagan reportedly did? It’s a tough choice, and every individual should be supported in making the well-reasoned choice that is right for her/him.

100. Correctomundo Mike: Mary joined the Sea Org sometime around the mid 80’s — she was a public person from LA — pretty much part of the prima donna school and carried that forward into the SO.

In my humble snarky opinion 🙂

101. There are no status guarantees in life — Mary should be a good reminder.

102. Simi Valley

Two things:

(1) Reading this reminds me of how pathetically naive S.O. members were around the time I was in (1988-1989) about the goings-on “uplines” as it was called. It sounded like such a rarefied existence, a “dream” job … unbeknownst to us, it was more like a “nightmare.”

(2) (very slightly off topic): I am “out” from under the radar now, and maybe Marty will have something further to say about that soon.

103. Hi Marsha,

Thank you for sharing a very human side to Mary. My experience with her wasn’t very pleasant so I’m afraid I ratcheted down into a ALL BAD viewpoint of Mary and of course this can NEVER be true.

I too hope she calls you.

Love,
Christine

104. I knew a girl whose last name was Tree, and her parents named her Mary, and you can guess the middle name they wickedly gave her: “Christmas”.
Her dad’s first name was Jack, and I think his father started the tradition and gave Jack the middle name: Pine.

Anyways agreed.

If you want to know how Scientology’s group dynamics compares to other religions, there’s a lot of comparisons in religious apologist scholar writings.

We in Scientology with our echelons are not alone in these types of insider outsider and knee jerk respect for the top ranks (who out of our sight are treated to seance hazing Muscical Chairs battleball games).

My hindsight advice, is WDC and Exec Strata have to go to college, as part of their training, and study other cults’ bad behavior, and study religion history, and humanities, and comparative theology, and steer Scientology away from religions’ mistakes, and away from cult behavior.

Studying LRH’s ideas I think is not enough.

105. JB is a free man with a beautiful family. Little Isabella thanks you, I’m sure Mareka does, and I and a whole lot of others give thanks regularly. In fact I often say a little prayer for you and other ex-Ints, whether escaped or not.

Besides, Scott, I don’t think John was slighting anybody. For heaven’s sake, he’s only been out 2 years. That’s nothing. Give the guy some air.

106. Just finished part two.

My God! John Brousseau, thank you. I know you’d probably say, “thank you for what?” Thank you for telling the story.

I’m not a Scientologist anymore but I think my obsession with researching all this information has done a few things for me.

1) The crazy dark shit that happened just before and after Ron died was not all his doing. Maybe none, I’m still not convinced that Ron had at least some indirect responsibility for creating systems of militarization and black ops. That being said, I have resurrected within myself a more kindly view toward him: warts and all.

2) That the real evil shit came from and is coming from Miscavige. He is a true textbook sociopath.

And Marty, man you have quite a load to carry. Thank you for being on the good guys side.

I’m looking forward to the day when the stories we hear are about people learning about life, the soul etc.

Auditors, you have a lot of work to do to turn this around.

Please anyone still in this dangerous church, please start thinking for yourself. If these guys (excuse me, Independents) can do it you can!

If you all ever have an LA get together I know of one heretic that would enjoy it. I promise to be nice re Ron 🙂

Thanks Marty for the delivery system of this info.

107. martyrathbun09

I wasn’t talking about JB.

108. verobeachmax

Hi Simi,
VWD for getting out from under the radar and joining the Indie 500 list. I look forward to hearing your whole story. As you can see, Marty has been up to his eyeballs on breaking news and it seems to be getting harder to squeeze in a personal item because of all the cult coverage. But I have a feeling you’ll be on soon.

109. Or as some one recently said to me in another context completely, when looking at a beautiful picture, don’t look at the ropey dishevelled frame aound it, just admire the picture.

110. Grasshopper, a person who hasn’t tasted an orange is not really to blame for not knowing what it tastes like.
It really takes the willingness to learn, auditing, having a sense of spiritual adventureousness to experience things of a spiritual nature.
And if people don’t have that, so what?

We don’t know things until we know them. And not knowing something is not something to blame people for.

If he was more pro Scientology it’s possible that his reporting would not carry the punch it has.

Appreciate the “twack” accross Miscaviges face and let the rest go.

111. Jethro Bodine

Great story, fills in lots of holes for me. Glad to see JB is now out and doing well. The way out is the way out.

112. Jim, thanks for the kind words.

I actually reached out to Jon Atack and Gerry Armstrong (two of Ortega’s primary sources on LRH’s life) a few months ago. Gerry, as you probably know, was one of the main sources for the three anti-LRH books (by Atack, Miller and Corydon) in the 80s and 90s. These three books have largely fueled much of the anti-LRH sentiment online at ESMB, OCMB, at Tony’s blog and elsewhere. Even Janet Reitman’s and Lawrence Wright’s (The New Yorker) recent book/articles seemed to take their cue on LRH’s life from these books.

When I spoke with Jon Atack and Gerry Armstrong a few months ago, we had a lively conversation. When I provided the National Archives documentation which I had found (which addressed and effectively disproved one of the pillars of their “LRH lied about his military career throughout his life” argument), the conversation went silent. I haven’t heard from either of them since.

Meanwhile, I’m planning another trip to the National Archives this summer to keep digging. I found a large set of very interesting, and potentially relevant, records which may shed more light on Ron’s life. We’ll see if they turn up anything.

113. “Bollocks” /ˈbɒləks/ is a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning “testicles”.

114. The woman who was the president of F.S.O. I am talking about was Hubbard’s personal valet at one time. So I must be wrong. Thank God.
She was the president at F.S.O. late 80’s until ’92. Very glad to know I am mistaken about that. I had a lot of affinity for her and she had a lot of stories for me. She was very special.

115. martyrathbun09

Actually it is the way through – there was a lot of “through” omitted in the media account.

116. Thomas More

That’s really well done, Margaret. If there is anything as bad as embellishing a service record, it is trying to discredit someone who served his country honorably. I’ve only seen the trailer for “The Master” but I get the impression that the writer/director took his cues from Armstrong as well.
If one day you put up that site with your findings, please let us know.

117. Li'll bit of stuff

Terrific reply, Ronnie.

118. Li'll bit of stuff

Yes indeed Safe! That is exactly the kind of world I believe
most on this site believed they would find, when signing up
with Scientology, That world, is still there, and available,
in somewhat less glaring make up. It’s a world we build from
within, using the power of the Scn tools available to you.
One of those tools is that of refusing ANY SP or sociopath
ANY power over you, at least in your own mental universe.
Better still, one feels more empowered by overt attack, on
the offending creature. (even in mock-up form is effective!)
Taking back one’s inherent power, there is no other real
workable solution.
Calvin.

119. Good job JB on getting your story over to Village Voice. I’m happy LRH had you as a friend. But I was surprised to hear that Int base execs were allowed to watch Anderson Cooper’s 4 part TV special as you say a conference room was set up to watch it in Building 50. I thought SO were not allowed to watch this kind of thing on TV or the internet. It seems to me like all Int base staff would have blown if they were allowed access to such. Can anyone else clarify this for me please?

120. martyrathbun09

They weren’t. Ortega’s misup. The people who were interviewed (Jenny DV, et al) watched it.

121. It might be a good idea to publish these scanned documents somewhere, as the most used anti-LRH line that I encounter is that he lied about his military carreer.
Maybe Friends of LRH would be a good place to publish those documents (and other historical data).

122. Thomas and Ulf,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Using Friends of LRH isn’t a bad idea, and when the time comes, I’ll offer to put the webpages and documents there, as well as scientolipedia.com and scientology-cult.com. I’ll likely first create my own pages of explanatory notes and documents to lay the whole thing out, and then from there offer it to the other sites.

123. You can say that again.

124. I don’t think Jenny DV was too bright on that mission. You have to think with the fact if you are appearing on the Anderson Cooper Show you are appearing before his many, many, fans. What does she do? Attack him in front of his fan base. What was she thinking, that the show was all about her? Jeff Hawkin’s former wife was frightening with the sneer and her hate for him OOOOooozzzed across the screen. Why did David have to hide behind the former wives of his accusers in itself was telling . He would not come forward to deny the claims. That translates into = guilty ’nuff.

125. Marty, Thanks for clarifying.

126. Jethro Bodine

OK, but ultimately there was no way to fix the scene at the Int Base and no way (corporately) to remove Miscavige from within the church, and so leaving was the only logical choice. I think there are some people like Heber who are still at the Int Base who feel they still need to get “though” some thing, like a BS ethics handling that drags on for years and years, e.g. the RPF, the “Hole”, etc. And of course, there is still the infamous “come back so you can route out standardly”, which turns into a multi-year ethics program, if you can escape at all.

127. The Feds don’t do anything about it, because DM is working for the Feds.

128. Oh… I don’t know. He slapped one of his PCs once when he was doing an interneship.

129. Does anyone know if Miscavige sees these articles of late e.g. Village Voice, etc. Just curious if has a group that keeps tabs on the media and alerts him to them. Thanks much.

130. Sounds great, Margaret, thanks!

131. Understood, but I’m not letting Tony off so easily. He has a huge career stake in Scientology, and he really should know something about what he is reporting. Someone covering the Vatican should know Catholicism very well (even if they are not Catholic) and someone covering Wall Street should know Wall Street.

It is one thing for a reporter to be an idiotic about a subject for a one-off article to make a deadline, but article after article for years on end – I’m sorry, but Tony should be better informed.

I will give him one thing: At least he knows the story is really the crimes of the Church. That is his “major.” His “minor” is that Scientology/Hubbard/the E-Meter/Whole Track is crazy/a sham/BS. The good news on this is that once Mr. David Miscavige is out of the way and the Church in reform mode, he will leave it alone. In other words, he won’t spend ink attacking the Indies.

132. True, but that was long before he was the world famous Supreme Leadah of Scientology.

133. Thanks, Jim, I should have looked it up. Yours is the first definition, and mine is still off the mark even for the second (“rubbish, nonsense”). You may have cleared up my 30-year MU from my friend’s definition of the Sex Pistols albu title!

134. Looking forward to seeing then when you do get the time to post.

135. Thank you.

136. JB, just saw this last night and read both parts straight through. It was nice to get a time track of events from a very unique position. You certainly weren’t the typical SO member.

I had to laugh at the fishing trip with DM. I’ve never heard of anyone going psychotic over fishing. As a young girl, I caught my first fish at Idylwild. Seems the fish just liked me because I didn’t have to wait at all…my secret was I used Velveeta cheese as bait and a stick for a pole. All the other fishermen kept trying to trade their poles for my stick but I wouldn’t give it up and caught enough to feed the family dinner. My grandfather was awesome and cleaned them up and cooked them right on the BBQ. Great pleasure moment!

I also found your observations spot on regarding treating people well results in success and am glad you chose to follow your heart over DMs crushing orders to berate them.

You look great and happy with your new family. Much continued success for you in the future!

137. ThetaPotata

The JB story part 1 & 2 was a great read. What a great skill set and unique LRH perspective. I’m thinking JB was probably one of the guys that built the Roman Aquaducts system or some other incredible construction projects in a past life. I love the stories of the guys that decide to leave and just walk out the door. No blood from climbing the fence or failed attempts. JB decided and then left and there just wasn’t too much they could do about it. I wonder how it went for the recovery team when they got back and reported to Miscavige that the operation recover JB was a complete and utter failure?

138. Your reasonable point is taken. There is a wealth of “other” treatments that will aid the cancer patient in getting through the more serious anti-cancer agents that are most effective. But to say that Vitamins and the like can help cure cancer is outrageous and simply untrue. So if anyone is reading this, and you are thinking about alternative treatments, please do your research and do not rely on just one course. Please read about all treatment. We want everyone well –
Having said all that, a great day and I am off.

My husband and I both read the whole Village Voice interview with JB together. Whew! I hope it stirs up so much attention, the FBI reconsiders.
I do want to comment that JB is probably not interested in the Independence movement because he never did get alot of training and auditing–some of the best benefits of Scientology. Plus he’s decompressing. He really is the ultimate Mr. Fix-it though. He could probably McGyver himself out of a locked box.
I don’t think DM can replace him!
