Move On Up A Little Higher

Many people have asked me about the meaning of the title of this blog.

One of the original inspirations for doing what we have been doing for the past three years came from listening to an early 1960’s interview of  gospel singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson conducted by American popular historian and civil rights activist Studs Terkel.   For the next several decades until he died in his nineties Studs often told a story about Mahalia that he often characterized as “what it is all about” and “what this world needs now.”

Studs Terkel on Mahalia Jackson

I guess another way of putting it is integrity.  Mahalia in turn was inspired, and inspired others, by song, particularly this one:

The Words to the Music from Mahalia. Thanks for the Sunday foot-tapping time Marty. What a fun trip this was!

Songwriters: Rev W H Brewster
One these morning soon one morning
I’m gonna lay down my cross get me a crown
Soon one evening late in the evening
Late in the evening I’m going home live on high
Soon as my feet strike Zion
Lay down my heavy burdens
Put on my robe in glory
Going home one day and tell my story
I’ve been coming over hills and mountains
Gonna drink from the Christian Fountain

You know all God’s sons and daughters that mornin’ now
Will drink that old healing water
And we gonna live on forever, we gonna live on forever
We gonna live on up in glory afterwhile.
Oh Lord I’m going out sight-seeing in Beulah
March all around God’s altar
Walk and never get tired
Fly Lord and never falter
I’m gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet old man Daniel
Gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet the Hebrew children
Gonna move on up a little higher
Meet Paul and Silas
Gonna meet my friends and kindred
Gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet my loving mother
I’m gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet the Lily of the valley
I’m gonna feast with the Rose of Sharon
It will be always howdy howdy
It will be always howdy, howdy
It will be always howdy howdy and never goodbye
Oh will you be there early one morning
Will you be there somewhere round the altar
Will you be there oh when the angels shall call the roll
God knows I’ll be waiting
Yes I’ll be watching somewhere on the altar
Well I’ll be waiting oh at the beautiful yes golden gate
Well well soon as my feet strike Zion
Gonna lay down my heavy burden
I’m going to put on my robe in glory
I’ve been coming over the hills and mountains
Gonna drink from the Christian Fountain
You know all God’s sons and daughters that mornin’
Will drink that old healing water
Meet me there early one morning
Meet me there somewhere on the altar
Meet me there oh when the angels shall call the roll

  7. Dear Marty ,
We met once a while back. Life brought me challenges
that I triumphed over . I read you blog everyday ,sometimes a few times
and the challenges I get now are full blown corkers and I am loving every minute. My wins after Church of Miscavige are a Sci Fi writers wet dream.

Keep up the excellent work, you have my full support.

  12. Great Sunday morning message Marty. Your loyalty to the integrity of Ron’s tech and carrying out the intent of his mission is admirable. Thanks for being here, buddy.

  13. Coffee in the morning with Marty & friends… it’s become a routine.

    😉

  14. Scotty,
You bigger than life, bursting, giant ol’ friend o’ mine!! I heard Mahalia this Sunday morning, and that shuffle rhythm just as moving as can be, and I saw you, me and your family out on the porch dancing, singing, and with the praises ringing for this wonderful life.

If happiness is overcoming obstacles, on the way to a higher place, DANG!! I’m happy 🙂

  15. Very moving indeed.
And how amazing it is when you no longer exclude other religions from your mindset – to see we all want to move toward eternity and live on up in glory after while.

  16. Jean F. Genest

    ♫ Very Nice ! ♫
Θ While we continue to move on up a little higher,
those who still toe David Miscavidge’s line, and donate generou$ly to his $cam$, continue to move on DOWN a little LOWER ↓, day after day.
The adventure is much more fun moving upwards ↑ 🙂

And here was I thinking “moving on up a Little Higher” was based on the James Ullman Novel, “Banner in the Sky” (Inspiration to Disney’s “Third Man on the Mountain” 1959).

    Synchronicity

Thanks for the background, Marty. Mahlia Jackson was much beloved among my parents’ generation, and I know that she was very inspirational to millions. Apparently, she still is.

  19. Jimmy,

I got your picture and it made me laugh! Thanks for the happy thoughts and wonderful wisdom – you made my day!

  20. Wonderful post about wonderful people… I know it is not the emphasis of your message, Marty, but I wanted to thank you for mentioning Studs Terkel. Although to only mention that he was a civil rights activist misses so much about the man. I liked him as an author, broadcaster and oral historian, but wikipedia mentions that he also acted.

Not that being a civil rights activist is a little thing… I don’t mean that. To be mentioned as a civil rights activist is quite a lot, but he was that and even more.

I like reading about the books your enjoying. You will find much pleasure in reading more of Studs. What I most admired about him was his ability to distinguish and celebrate virtue in every man he talked with. There was nothing he found “common” in any man.

Studs, I think, had a view of individual man much as what LRH expressed in Handbook for Preclears. I have read it often enough in the past to have it memorized, I think… I hope so in that I do not have it with me…

“The basic individual is not a buried unknown or a different person, but an intensity of all that is best and most able in the person. The basic individual equals the same person minus his pain and dramatizations.”

Thanks for reminded of the enjoyment I have had from reading and listening to Studs.

  21. Marty, when I first read your blog I thought the title was like the common saying after one leaves a job: “onwards and upwards”! – I took the title to mean you were ‘moving on up a little higher’ after you left the church of miscavige. Only just a couple of days ago out of curiosity, I googled the title and found the reference to this gospel song – how co-incidental you posted this!?

  22. johnny d / thetan-x

    Marty,
Damn it I’m sorry Marty but your confusion and or trying to “duplicate” the Christian heritage and fold it into the “Independent Scientology Movement” is beyond atrocious, its down right plagiarism and its disgraceful.
    plagiarism |ˈplājəˌrizəm|
    noun
the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.

And that been a practice in Scientology since its conception.

Marty, I – and most of us – have absolutely no problem with you practicing your “faith” , “religion” or what ever it is you want to call it….. “Space Opera” ??
But Marty… Do Not, DO NOT bring in the the wonderful Christian Songs from a true Christian woman into your environment and attempt to make it part of your “Religion” , I surely hope thats not what you are attempting to do, but if it IS, dude I believe even those that admire you may have problem with that.

  23. martyrathbun09

    Dan,
You might look for his greatest interviews cd set. It is a remarkable history. Mahalia, Zero Mostel, Mel Brooks, James Baldwin, Buckminster Fuller, and on. I also couldn’t help but think while listening how much he sounded like LRH in LRH’s auditing demos. The guy has incredible natural TRs, and brings out thoughts from all these people that I don’t think anyone less in-communication could.

Thanks Johnny, you provide a wonderful, live lesson to readers.

  25. Ah!!!!!!!! That was powerful goodness!!!!!!!!!!!

When all is said and done on this ball terrestrial, it is Spirit, Theta, God, that steals our heart forever.

For when the dream of individuation is desolved in wisdom and perception of pure Static/Theta/God/Soul/Spirit, only the joy and bliss of conscious immortal freedom remain. Our own true nature.

Thank you Marty for the blast of an amazing soul singing like thunder!!!
    Love to All:-)

  26. Wow… what teenie tiny limited viewpoint.

  27. Marty,

Just wanted to ack you for what you do here every day. The scope of people that you assemble with this blog is remarkable and the spirit in which you do it and sense of humor you employ is a real example.

Thanks for giving us a glimpse of what you encounter by being there and communicating. And keeping us all in the loop.. You are the OOD’s!
(Orders Of the Day, for those not familiar)

I think you are really the first to maintain comm lines with such a diverse group. You are the antithesis of the intolerance and censoring that Miscavige employs. You are actually moving the religion forward, in the full sense of the word.

And… when the buzzards get you down occasionally, you can always go fishing right outside..or watch the “Car Wash” video. That always works for me.

Keep on doing what you do..

  28. WTF? lol

  29. …those who still toe David Miscavidge’s line, and donate generou$ly to his $cam$, continue to move on DOWN a little LOWER ↓, day after day.

Ain’t that the ever lovin’ truth?

As with the old question, “would you like others to experience similar gains to yours?”, I so much want my fellow Scientologists who are still behind the razor wire to experience the relief that truth (about the church) can bring.

  30. No kidding…

  31. Beautiful, Marty. Beautiful. There’s no more fitting song and no more fitting title for this blog. To listen to Mahalia Jackson is to touch a little piece of eternity, lovely beyond.

  32. Actually Johnny you are mis or un- informed as to the inception of Scientology. The first public use of this term is in a lecture dated 21 December 1951, entitled CHART OF ATTITUDES. Here Mr. Hubbard defines a “scientology”.

“This channel should probably be called something like Scientology (a new coined word); it probably should be. What is it? It is a route—the study of science or the study of truth or the study of knowledge—because it is “the study of”.”

“Regardless of what we use to compose our scientology, when we nail down these phenomena with tenpenny spikes, we have recovered data to the field of useful, relative truth. It is useful, relative truth.”

And in referring to the gathering into several so-called “bins”, repositories of useful truths and methods of gaining them, such as a “scientology” a means of “knowing how to know” about things, the following:

“Here is life eternal, here is happiness, the basic truths behind Freemasonry, the Catholic Church and so on—all of these things have some basic truths behind them. Whether they have attained those truths or not is beside the point. There are a tremendous number of answers; theoretically, there are answers to everything under the sun.
What I am giving you here is the basic idea of how I have been working in order to get enough data into the field of useful, relative truth to resolve cases.”
So, you seem to have omitted a little research into your claims about plagiarism, and it would seem the universality of truth, by whatever “sect” or title it may appear under.
Too bad. So sad. Your Dad.

  33. martyrathbun09

Thanks a lot Mark. You oughta swing by next time you are on the continent. Sorta like a poor man’s Hawaii here.

  34. johnny d / thetan-x

My pleasure Marty, I am sure glade to see that you are unwinding a bit, after years of not wanting to place comments from us who “enturbulate” (with love you know) to posting our thoughts…You are growing on me Marty, I mean that sincerely, I do !!!!
    peace & good fortune…
just keep it honest thats all we ask !!

oh, BTW I get sarcasm !

  35. Wow! Methinks a sacred cow has been gored. Pissed off because of an imagined slight, and then resorting to calling my religion fake! Well done, sir!

  36. Dittos on that, Mark. Marty’s site has become my primary comm line to what’s happening in the Independent Scientologist world, and to the many excellent thetans who stand with LRH and Standard Tech.

Marty, I can’t thank you enough for what you’re doing. Your blog is an invaluable resource and connection point for the Indie community. It’s become the de facto Independent Scientologist Times, and is the first thing I check over morning coffee (even before the other news of the day). If it’s not on Marty’s blog, it probably didn’t happen 😉

  37. Awesome! I loved both videos.

Thanks for the explanation – I did wonder. I get the reference. “Your self-determinism and your honor are more important than your immediate life.” Because you’re moving on up a little higher.

  38. You blow me away Logan. Where can I find this tape?

  39. Marty, great story, great song, very theta.

  40. I second that, Wow!

  41. Yo Johnny…… tolerance, love. Can I get a little amen brother. We are all brothers and sisters here. Ism schmism…….. let not you heart be troubled. Love your neighbor as yourself.
Its not labels that make a Christian, it’s the practice of certain principles. Think it over brother.

  42. SO awesome and beautiful.

    Thx Marty

  43. Tom Gallagher

    Master of Qualifications, thanks!

  44. ahhh…healing water…tastes so much better than kool-aid.

  45. Mahalia Jackson was one of the most inspired and gifted singers I’ve ever heard. Her voice, personal humility, enthusiasm for music, devotion to her religion and willingness to relay her beliefs mark her as one of the greats.
What I’ve always liked were her songs of universal spiritual values anyone would immediately understand. No mincing of the words!
Marty, you do her fitting tribute.

  46. An April Fool’s joke!

  47. Thanks Marty

After a bit of thought in 2007 or so, I connected the dots about “moving up a little bit higher”… with Mahalia Jackson and it was as beautiful then as it is now.

  48. Captain Bob

    johnny D-

you stated “But Marty… Do Not, DO NOT bring in the the wonderful Christian Songs from a true Christian woman into your environment and attempt to make it part of your “Religion”

I think you miss the point. Marty is only bringing in Similarities, Identities and Differences. And for a person posting or reading this blog to decide these things.

And this you said – “the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.

And that been a practice in Scientology since its conception.”
    —————–

Now, you have to realize there is a difference between Scientology as an applied religious philosophy and the current Church of Scientology. And note the words I used. Applied religious philosophy vs current Church of Scientology being promoted as it is being promoted and mocked up or being created. There is a difference between what one reads in the books and listens to the lectures vs what is being PR’d or promoted by the in present time Church of Scientology. And the actions and requirements of the present Church of Scientology do not correlate with what is written by Hubbard.

Who came up with the saying “What would LRH do? is something I do not know. And thus I do not believe it nor understand it, as LRH would never know my present time situation or data or knowledge which I have to think with. And I do not believe nor have I ever read or listened to an LRH data that says “What would LRH do? As what would LRH do is different from what Scientology is – which is an “organized” body of truths, of data.

  49. Captain Bob

Now, LRH certainty gives his “opinions” about things. But those are not truths or Scientology per the axioms, logics, etc.

  50. Captain Bob

I just had a cognition. This blog here by Marty is giving me the held down seven on the third dynamic. 🙂

After reading much later posts and present time posts by people here.

Little by little, moving on up.

  51. R&D Vols.

  52. Captain Bob

and lo and behold, it is communication. Itsa’s, two way comm.

thanks Marty and all others. 🙂

  53. FCDC Class of 74

I just started as a christian due to my mother’s influence. However ,I became oh so much more through Scientology and a good friend. Now a stellar group of beings helps me move up a little higher. Thanks y’all.

  54. theakman,

I believe you can download the mp3 here:

    CHART OF ATTITUDES
    http://www.mediafire.com/?mtm0gtz9gho

There are over 1,000 LRH lecures, 1950 through1960, archived here:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?ndukyxqvr2v3b

If these links don’t work for some reason, let me know I will post additional ones.

  55. Li'll bit of stuff

Jim, his earlier point was made, from his viewpoint
only, from mebbe just ONE side of the Rubikube,
so to speak, yeah? Now thanks for turning that
there “kube” around, so’s to be able to show the
other sides as well. Mebbe johnnyd / thetan-x
may also get the irony in this, that what LRH
actually managed to achieve, was not only to
“solve” the Rubikube, but to SHOW others
how to “solve” it as well.

Sarcastic enough, for you, jd/t-x ?

Lighten up, man, as I’m sure you can, hey?

  56. Li'll bit of stuff

Marty, Mark and Ronnie just told it like it really is.

Please take a bow, SIR !!

  57. scilonschools

Convergence of Faiths & Religion!!, Wgat is happening in this world!
Those Muslims mention the Virgin Mary 36 times in the Koran (compared to only 7 times in the Bible), If we all had empathy and saw things from eachothers perspective occasionally, what next?
Peace, no more War, Creativity & Love ruling the World?
The mere horror of it!! 🙂

  58. Martin Gibson

Well there’s a hug right where its needed. Thats good for the soul.
It certainly clears the help button. THATS how aesthetics should be used.

  59. Jethro Bodine

And of course, there’s “Moving On Up” in this sense:

  60. johnny d / thetan-x,
There be Scientologists who consider themselves Christian in that we agree with and do our best to follow the teachings of Jesus …for example, “love they neighbor as thyself”. I am one of them. I see no conflict between Christianity and Scientology (which is a pan-denominational religious philosophy). In at least one of his books, L. Ron Hubbard has cite parts of the bible (St. Luke) and prominent Christians theologians (St. Thomas Aquinas) as being inspirational to him.

As for Mahalia Jackson, Wow. Marty, thanks for explaining the inspiration for the name of this blog. I too thought that it came from something on the order of “upward and onward”. This is so much better. And yeah, that pure, healing water tastes soooooooo good!

  61. E.J. Croughs

There are people, philosophies and religions that are tolerant of and embrace other people, philosophies and religions. And then there are those that don’t. There are people who understand other races and religions and there are those who don’t. To duplicate and understand others is not a crime, the crime is to be unwilling to let yourself do so; most wars stem from that fear.

  62. Yes, it’s become such a stable datum that it long since became “the blog” when talking with other Indies. It would be impossible to overstate just how important “the blog” is, on so many levels. As a reserach tool, as a venting channel, as a priceless resource for new lurkers, as a rallying point, and as the Daily News of free Scientology.

Regarding your earlier comment Ronnie “I so much want my fellow Scientologists who are still behind the razor wire to experience the relief that truth (about the church) can bring.” Totally agrre – THAT is what motivates me more than anything. Knowing the REAL wins and gains that are just waiting to be had by simply taking that tiny first step of walking out the door. Initially I had a bit of a hidden standard going on with it – something along the lines of “they (still drinking the KoolAid) will come back and thank me later on…” but I realised that was irrelevant – and probably not going to happen anyway. Many will probably have a go at me because “I helped destroy the Church” – while they are still decompressing at least.

  63. I will get those. Yes; excellent conversationalist… interested, easily, throughout each talk. Thanks again.

  64. E.J. Croughs

There’re people that are tolerant of and embrace other races, cultures and religions and then there’re those that don’t. To duplicate and understand them is not a crime, to not do so is; it is known to have started wars. btw, you’re able to understand Marty’s sarcasm, now go for the rest!

  65. Sometimes, in the too-frequent messes of the world, pure Faith and Hope and Love are welcome – an oasis, when the sciences leave the heart wanting, when the hostilities seem to have no solution. When you own Scientology, master the technologies of it, is it not an addition to the soul of man that always existed? Scientology is a path to get there, it is what was missing. The “there” to get to and arrive at, the message and the destination both are unchanged – you find this character in different forms in philosophies (I mean classical philosophy, not the pretentious commercialized idiocy of today’s semantics), and in religions. You find it in the search for solutions, for ways and means. You even find mercy present in men at war.

If only we could live by this … and the impediment is the reactive mind. The Smart Heart is what we want, and today we have it available.

I find nothing wrong with putting the teachings of Christianity into a science – the source is very clear. How shocked would everyone be if some of the notorious black-hats of the Co$ were to sincerely find love? Religion is a personal thing. If Mr. Rathbun wishes to name his blog in some reflection of his personal beliefs, why not? Christianity is given senior stature to Scn, it seems to me. “Hey … dis is poisonal, nod bussines.”

  66. Ronnie Bell

Thank you so much for posting the link to those lectures! Much appreciated!

  67. Ronnie Bell

Many will probably have a go at me because “I helped destroy the Church” – while they are still decompressing at least.

We Free Scientologists are in an enviable position as regards our ‘decompression’. We’re not going to collapse in on ourselves when DM finally blows or completely caves himself in. Many, (if not most) churchies will, given that DM has become their de facto stable datum with regards to Scientology.

Imagine getting the horrifying news one morning that DM has fled to some safe haven, along with a cadre of co-conspirators and millions (or even billions) of church dollars. The full weight of his crimes against LRH, Scientology, and all of humanity, are going to hit them like a ton of bricks. Many will not recover from the violence of that betrayal, and those who do will have a long and painful decompression period.

And, as you said, some will accuse the Free Scientologists of “helping to destroy the church”. Such Kool-Aid drinkers are hopeless sycophants, stuck within the cult of personality.

  68. You’re very welcome Ronnie!

It’s a resource that has been online for 2-3 years now. In fact a person can get a Mediafire account and mirror the files on their own account, but I believe there is a monthly charge for that.

  69. Hey Johny,
Marty, as always, cited his source for the song and the lyrics…THAT’S NOT PLAGARISM dumb ass! Also, the Christian religion doesn’t own that song and, by the way, either do you.
