Declaration of Independence
Max Bleiweiss (aka VBMax) Indie 500 #331 19 May 2012
The time has come to announce publically that I am no longer a member of the Church of Scientology and am joining the group of Independent Scientologists that follow the applied religious philosophy of L. Ron Hubbard. This was not a difficult decision to make; the only difficulties encountered were in communicating with “friends” and relatives. This, mostly, did not go well but I was prepared for any eventuality.
I’ve been a Scientologist since 1973 and first heard of it through a job ad in an L.A. newspaper. I had recently returned to the U.S. after 5 years overseas and needed work so I went down to the old L.A. Org near Alvarado St. for a job interview. The receptionist asked me to have a seat on the couch and I read through the “Scientology Picture Book” which was on the coffee table in front of me. I thought to myself, “This is really interesting!” Then, I was taken to view the LRH video interview with Tony Hitchman which also piqued my interest. Next, the Div 6 Reg enlightened me about the Comm Course (HAS) and I found myself on the course within a few minutes.
That fantastic, little $25 course blew my case to smithereens and made me a Scientologist for life!
And so it was that I entered into a staff contract after a few days with only a comm course under my belt. I won’t bore you with all the details of the insanities I witnessed and became part of while on staff there. Suffice it to say that it differed greatly from what I was learning in my staff hatting. And some of the crazy execs I encountered back then are still infamous to this day. But, as I said, I was a Scientologist for life so I soldiered on. I finished my contract in 1976 and this brings up a point in a recent Marty post about the Church’s running a “can’t have” on auditor training even back then. Part of the exchange for my employment was training to Class IV but there was no way I could get trained while doing my post since I was never studentable, worked day and night, even all-nighters and had to moonlight on the weekends just to pay rent in some downstat rooming house. So, I waited till I finished my contract to route on and start my Class IV training. But the Org didn’t allow it; they said it had to have been done during the contract time.
I spent the next couple of years as a public, was on the NED course at ASHO in 1979 and had the good fortune to be audited to Clear by my twin. We both went to a briefing about Superpower and were recruited into the SO to get personally trained by LRH as Superpower auditors. (Think about it, that was 33 years ago and still no Superpower.) Now, part of my think about joining the SO was that it was LRH’s Org, so naturally very sane and ethical. Oops…. It turned out to be just as nutty as my L.A. Org experience if not more so. I never did get to go uplines for that promised auditor training but the good news is I did get the HKTL training and applied it as the HKTL Pilot I/C and Sup from 1980-1983 at NWCI.
I also had various misadventures including some squirrel ethics and justice applied to me. I finally wound up on the PAC RPF in 1983 with a bunch of other really upstat staff members. In 1985, I was fitness boarded out of the SO for medical reasons; during one of my “ethics handlings” (the Running Program pilot), I’d turned on some serious health problems that still exist to this day. So I was a public once again.
Like so many others, I have spent a lot of time and money since, trying to get up the Bridge, but it’s been 10 years since my last services. In 2002 I came to Flag for OTVI & VII after selling my house in L.A. and buying the package with the proceeds. I was one of the people on a list that was compiled for a program to produce 10,000 NOTS auditors. I felt like I was doing my duty to make it to Flag as part of the program, and in fact I arrived on precisely my target date. However, those last services at Flag were a dog’s breakfast and I just wasn’t willing to continue any longer. It included invalidation of Clear, attempting to run Dianetics on me and a demand for additional, unnecessary sec checking by RTC after the Flag C/S had OKed me to attest.
At that time I had no idea how bad things actually were. It wasn’t until the Debbie Cook cycle that I found out how bad. In fact if it were not for a teaser on TV about an upcoming Debbie Cook interview I would probably still be in blinders. The rest is of course history, I did my due diligence, followed the trial, found “Friends of LRH” and other significant links. I never dreamed that I would ever go to a website titled “Scientology-cult.com” but that one turned out to be a very important one, as well as this one. In fact, the day I decided to leave the Church was the day I found Marty’s blog which was also the day of Ronnie Bell’s great declaration writeup. I was, as I put it then, in anguish at what I had found and didn’t want to believe it but it had to be confronted. And confront it I have, and I’ve come through it with flying colors thanks to all of you independents out there. You gave me back my hope when it all looked so hopeless. And now I’m a part of the team, the team I always wanted to be on to begin with. So, all you LRH Independents are my new friends.
I’m especially grateful to those Independents who blazed the trail for me so it became safe to go into the water.
And special thanks to Marty for putting the site here where we are free to communicate. (And blow tons of charge while doing so!)

It is great to see a veteran. Say what we will about any craziness in the 1970s, it was pure sanity compaired to after the tyrant (David Miscavige) took over.
Previouisly, there would be bouts of craziness, then it would be cool. After Miscavige took over, it was institutionalized abuse.

Like you, I didn’t have all of the jigsaw pieces to the puzzle, until Debbie Cook’s email led me here, and to Steve Hall’s site. On that first day, I went 24 hours straight, reading everything I could lay my hands on. By day two, there was no question that I needed to make a public stand, and I did so, just as soon as I could get it written up.

Welcome Max! Your story about the training betrayal really pisses me off! What a fraud! Can’t get the promised training while on staff because of staff sechedule and then when you finish your part of the agreement you weren’t given your exchange! That’s criminal.
On the brighter side, reading your declaration hit home to me what a blow to the corrupt CO$ it is when someone like you leaves. An enormous effort was expended cultivating you over the years to become the money source you became. You leave suddenly and there is no replacement. How long will it take to cultivate another equal money source? Especially since the dissemination stats have dwindled to just about nothing due to the lousy PR David Miscavage has created for the Church to say nothing about the gross failure of the idle orgs!

I have been a Sea Org member for 9 years and I was declared for insisting on the application of LRH HCOBs on Translations (see Translation Series HCOBs) which were never applied by Miscavige for obvious reasons.
A disaster all around the planet and a great delay in disseminating LRH technology around the world.
30 years have been lost.
LRH wrote in one of his REDs (LRH EDs), I think it is No 5, that the Why for EU was the non application of the Translation Series. He even wrote a CBO (Central Bureau Order? not quite sure about the title of that special bulletin) where there is an extended description of what he meant to do with the translation and those were orders briefing a Mission going to Copenhagen to put in the Translation Tech. Amazing stuff! One day we will all be in the know how Miscavige has undermined the global dissemination of Scientology by not applying the very Tech LRH put there for the world in order for the non english speaking people to avail of the Tech.

Ouch, on selling your house and going to FLAG! My dad did a similar thing, selling his to go do the Briefing Course, two weeks later he joined the SO. Soon he was reassured that the SO would train him and he transfered his package to the book account. He never did do the BC.
But, I am so happy to hear of your recent Scientology education and rehabilitation!
It reminded me of the importance of people doing the full doubt formula and announcing it publically. It really is all about TR3. Truth as-ises. Given a short amount of time to confront the truth, it is easy to see how off the rails the church has become. And, I’ll bet you did that all on your own, that you didn’t need anyone there to get you to reconsider, to tell you you are giving away your eternity, that your friends and family won’t talk to you (we all heard that disconnection doesn’t exist)…but I’ll bet that those still drinking the koolaid sure tried. I can clearly picture the scene…a gradual revelation and calmness followed by desperate, chaotic measures to convince you that your observations are wrong. Glad that truth revitalized enough theta for you to make it through the gauntlet!
Honestly, when you’re exterior to the church, it is very apparant how aberated it has become. The word “Scientology” quickly brings to mind what a bunch of wacko zealots there are…in that cult. The more the “church” is disassociated with the subject Scientology, the greater possibility there is that the name Scientology will be remembered by its successful technology. I had the same reaction as you to Scientology-cult website. But, I couldn’t believe all of the very detailed (time, place, form and event) truth that came from that site! So, you know that your confront is coming up when you can take the plunge and click “enter” into that site!
I still chuckle at my initial fear of going on the internet to look at “unofficial” sites to find the truth. My plunge took place in 2009 when the Truth Rundown came out and I had friends and family originating concern…so I went on the site to properly educate myself so that I could dead agent my family…and I found the truth, just not in the direction that I thought it was going to be. Can anyone say FREEDOM?

It doesn’t matter how long it took to wake up, it’s what you do here and now that matters. I was in for 30years before I realized I was supporting a cult.
I hope you find a way to put your training to use as there are thousands of pcs who have been abused and abandoned by the church. I audit seven days a week now, but there is no way I and the other field practitioners can put a dent in the backlog of pcs who need help.
We need every able bodied auditor to pitch in and set up a practice of some sort. There are lots of experienced people who will help.

The babe in the picture? When I first came to Ecuador, I was in my 30’s (it was while I was on a 3 week leave) and I was kayaking the Amazon. At one point, near the border with Brazil, I encountered this young Indian girl in the river, swimming strongly, but appearing very frantic.
She was surrounded by crocodiles!
I expertly threw a 12″ knife to her and she caught it by the shaft… I watched in amazement as she killed and then filleted the biggest character while treading water! All within minutes. Amazing strength!
The other surrounding crocs were also impressed: in fear for their lives they raced to the shore.
I picked her up in my kayak and brought her safely to shore. I was surprised that, instantly, a festival and ceremonies began around us.
Seems that she was the daughter of the local chief. Other villagers had witnessed what occurred and I was credited with saving her life!
You can guess what happened next… you’ve seen the same thing in a dozen movies… it was insisted that I marry the girl, and that it was no good to say “no”; to do so would have been a major offense. I was counseled to go through with it by a Christian missionary who had been working in the area for years. She claimed if I were to refuse all the missionaries would likely be executed.
So, although there is a longer story to be told, I went through with it!
Took some explaining when I got home and went back on post, but, I managed! (Great testament to Tone 40 and TRs…)
This is, perhaps, not the correct forum to go into the rest of the details… briefly, in the remaining days of my leave I learned the dialect of the region well enough to explain to my new wife and the chief the basics of Scientology and what my post was and how important it was for me to return.
How we got back together? We’ll talk about that person to person or personal message. Basically my good looks and derring-do got her in the first place and my ongoing charm has kept her seduced…

Others will follow your lead because the C of S will take every last penny you have including your heart and soul. Its a gutless organization with a bunch of cowards running the show especially at the top. Many have left and many are following to join the Indie movement which has the purity of SCN at its core. Anyone reading this who is on the fence jump over and run for the hills if you want to salvage any of your savings as well as your integrity and your heart and soul.
Jump baby jump its very liberating and life DOES get better, a 1000% better. So what are you waiting for? another reg to empty your pockets or another ethics officer to tell you how wrong and bad you are? Get the hell out you owe it to yourself and just maybe just maybe a light bulb might go off for your friends and family to jump ship as well. Remember who called everyone stupid? The blind leading the blind? I will give you one guess

Anyway, much shorter, which is maybe better, I am sorry that you had a tough time giving your all trying forward yourself and the dynamics in the official Church of Scientology. It was tough all around and craziness abounded. Still, I hope we are all better for it in the aggregate.
In the early days it was not uncommon for orgs to abuse staff and public, supposedly justified by their high purpose. I guess it is even much more common today under the insane leadership of David Miscavige. In fact, I am sure it is. Back in the 90’s ASHO took many thousands of dollars from Raymond Peace, now deceased, for the briefing course and then told him he couldn’t take it because he was an illegal pc and the course involved auditing. Never crossed their minds to refund the money. When he later asked them to refund it they thought about it and then said, sorry, no.

The timing of my declaration was the main thing I had to consider since it involved another’s welfare.

But on the other hand, I see your photograph and read your declaration and I know you are undefeated, and strong and flourishing in spite of it all! Your integrity is what counts! Good for you a gazillion times over. The RCS’ loss is the Indies’ gain. VWD on your decision – and may you continue to flourish and prosper! True also, that Marty has created a kind of Virtual Org for Real Scientologists!
Welcome home, Max. I too went to Flag in 2002 to do OT VI and VII. I know what you mean about the “dog’s breakfast.” I pushed through and ended up eating a dog’s lunch and dinner as well. But all is well now having reoriented myself with the truth of it all. And I have many true friends now, not like the 20+ year “friends” who disconnected from me without as much as a “good-bye.”

From what I have gathered just by following the story … that source of income has been superceded via return on investment of the Sea Org reserve accounts. All that DM has to do is maintain a facade. I get the idea that he really hates people and wants to phase them out as much as possible and is doing a fine job of that.

You were my KTL sup @ NWC. I was twinned with Julie Johnston – now Moresi, in fact I also did my student hat under you in the KTL crse room cuz a draft was eminent then and pre-req to the ministers course I HAD to do. I was CMO PAC EPF at the time. Boy people I remember… – Peter & Judy Speaker, Worstels, Belins, Carolyn Buri, Ron Hartwell who by the way fell 3 stories while washing the GO windows up above what is now the canteen entrance. George Smith had hoisted him up there by hand and couldn’t hold him any longer, rope slipped through his hand with severe rope burn to boot. I will never forget the thuds Ron had on the way down and at the bottom.
Wow Max you brought back some memories boy!! Oh yes… I did the SRD at NWC too.

That $25 HAS course was a huge reason Scientology boomed in the late sixties and 1970s.
The other one: LRH personally taught the BC in the 60’s and pulled in/made REAL AUDITORS.
Those people went out and set up missions, and spread the Tech like wild fire. People LOVE real auditors. People want to BE LIKE real auditors.
It reminds me of something some an old Franchise Holders. He said, “When the public hears a lecturer, their question is, “Would I like to be (have the beingness of) the lecturer?” If the answer is “Yes,” they sign up.
If the general public hears David Miscavige, how many want to be like him, other than a few sociopaths, sharing similar world-domination goals? Likely, none. Because, Miscavige’s personality is the opposite of the upper part of the Chart of Human Evaluation – smug, arrogant, self-centered, as opposed to Granting of Beingness.

Sam, I think you still have amazing radar for these things and generally I let others do the investigating but this one keeps coming up. I am a bit curious myself as I searched the Scientology completion data base for the names he has given, variations of them and possible nicknames and only came up with one match on the last name…it was a female.
I also searched a bunch of random names of people who have come out publicly on this blog and all but one of them was on that site. I feel fairly confident that that person is a legit independent. So, there is a chance in a million that Calvin just isn’t listed there. In my quick search I selected people who had been SO only, public only, old timer and newbie as well as combinations thereof and on all continents.
It is a shame that we have to think of things like this but spies have no integrity and I have seen what lengths DM will go to when it comes to people leaving the church and even more so, those who have left Int. I’m sure Mr Fisher can elaborate.

I think the HAS course was one of the most successful courses ever offered by the church. It created a generation of die-hard Scientologists, and the case gain was unbelievable.

When that course got dumped for “Success Through Communication” (I think that was the one, please someone correct me if I’m wrong), I read the STC book. It struck me as not holding a candle to the simplicity of the HAS I did. Does anyone know, did Ron supplant HAS with STC, or was it DM, or someone else altogether?
The answer would be worth knowing, if only as a historical tidbit, although it seemed to me to mark perhaps a beginning point to the downward spiral in which the CofS now finds itself – an early “unusual solution”, if you will, with countless to follow.

But I would think being a “40 year” scientologist and a wife with many successes with crimnon in the jails — they would be known at least among some of the people here. Hell, wouldn’t his wife’s work be in all the glossy or events propaganda? I don’t think you can be in the CoS for FORTY years and be a completely unknown quantity to this many long term exes. We usually shake them out after awhile. We had a poster here by the name of “OTVIII” and he did similar shit.
I have observed some consistancies with plants/bots that try to post here:
1. They make many and obvious grammar errors and /or punctuation errors. I think this is to make them “folksy” and to make them seem non-threatening. That way they can worm thier way into the hearts of the vulnerable.
2. They suck up to certain posters to gain “trust” or credibility.
3. They start some kind of shit with Marty or introduce some propoganda line into the mix and try to keep dinging it in like the cult does.
4. Eventually when outed and they know they are busted they blow off. They will never address the concerns that the others here have.
For example Sam and Karen B asked Calvin for a photograph of himself. I bet one will never be produced. You ask if anyone knows him? Maybe they will try some corny poster shiming in saying ” I know Calvin but I am under the radar.
Again, maybe the guy is legit but it’s not looking good right now.
He could prove himself by stating where he was on lines and email a picture of himself and tell us some people he knew while on lines so he cnabe checked out. If he has a beed with that then that is another out-point.
Publius, I long ago drew all of the same conclusions about the old HAS course that you have. It never made a lick of sense to me that that course disappeared from the starting line-up in Scientology. It was hugely successful, and flooded the orgs with new auditor trainees and pcs.
Perhaps it was working just a bit too well for someone, eh?

How hard is it to confirm you’re a real person with an authentic involvement in the CoS? Hasn’t been a problem for any of the others on the Indie list that participate on this blog.

I think the thing that Calvin does not fully understand is the lengths in which DM will go to stop the Independents.

And, understandably, if I were not a plant I would be upset about being accused of one and would do what I could to correct this misunderstanding, providing data or picture could be helpful. Hey, I even have certs and a declare with my name on them.
Max asked me to read his “going public” announcement and I did. Unfortunately it left me with even more questions. I am a genealogist and though his write up lists many names, dates and places…they just don’t add up. They don’t add up with Scientology sites or Jockey sites and they don’t add up with genealogy sites…all of which are heavily into documentation. He claims his father was a jockey and that fact may be true as there was a man by the name of Bernie from Durban who went to England who was a jockey. But this was well ahead of Calvin’s birth. I did find other genealogists who currently live in Durban with Aussie connections, perhaps they are related. It wouldn’t take much to pull the string.
Bottom line is I don’t find much info on any of the people listed in his write up which I find particularly odd especially since he reports to have had such a colorful life. I have quite an ordinary life, yet I am listed all over the internet. Maybe it is the fact that there was so much detail in “who” he was, as in biography. Perhaps there is data missing which leads some of us to jump to wrong conclusions. The data series is a tool which allows us to correct this. I, for one would not feel made wrong at all if someone corrected me. In fact, I’d feel grateful because I found that truth as-ises whether one was right or wrong about their conclusions.
Finally, I apologize to Max for having this thread on his Independent announcement, it really is the wrong place for this conversation. Max, you have taken a liking to Calvin and it is not my intention to discredit him specifically. But, this blog is about truth and being able to communicate. I have seen people that I knew personally enter into this blog, only to find out later that they became pawns of OSA and they blew the cover of others who were under the radar. Others, who had BIG connections and had begun disseminating “truth” were quickly hauled in to ethics and HANDLED and an iron door was shut tight on one of the most resistive koolaide camps. But one day, it will break open, of that I am sure.

Just to play devils advocate- who do you guys know in the field as public Scientologists? It could be possible that OSA could be giving you a cover story. I’m not saying that’s true- I’m just saying we might as well totally handle this terminatedly so it gets fully resolved.

You talk about granting of beingness, yet you can’t seem to get it on why some here don’t trust you. Have you no repsonsibility in this?
Personally , I have no real interest other than maybe the fact that I can’t stand slimy OSA bots. I really hope you are not one. If you are one, which I think possible and someone gets duped and slimed by you then I can say in my mind that I tried to help them. I don’t feel defensive about my comments to you. I feel my comments are well founded.
It isn’t just me suspicious of you, I’m just one of the ones vocal about it. You created it from your comments and actions. Many people got through here very smoothly on their announcements without issue.
I don’t give a rats ass what others think about me for the most part. I am proud to have this recorded on the Internet. If you questioned me and I thought it was reasonable I would take the time to handle the suspicions if I liked the group instead of acting all “huffy” about it.
I don’t understand your point about Marty helping you by not posting your replies to me. You seem to be sucking up to him now, almost propitiative.
What is vicious about asking someone to provide a picture and tell us about a few people that they know in their area that know them and establish some reality? Your over the top reaction is either coming from a desire to mis-direct or you are irrational on the subject at hand.

Thanks for the correction, Jerry! I don’t speak Spanish and was guessing it derived from the Latin word for “horse”, and going wildly wrong! Turns out, Spanish for “horse” is “caballo”, anyway.
