The tone of their response to media questions is always the same. It’s like an irritating noise that everyone knows is BS.

Guy did a pretty good job with this story. (Note: writers in publications like this do NOT write the headlines — he makes it pretty clear in the article that Marty is not anti LRH, but is anti Miscavige and Corporate Scn).
What is most interesting to me is the church’s response. The media are now starting to include the responses to prove how completely fucking nuts they are. Their own words hang them, time after time. The church already look like nutjobs with the squirrelbusters, but then they make sure everyone knows that they really ARE the nutjobs they appear to be by making stupid statements to try to “DA” Marty.
There are SO MANY responses they could give that would not make them look foolish — the problem is that for any of those to be offered Miscavige would have to decide that he isnt worried about Marty or Independents and he cannot bring himself to do that. The real question is this: If the claimed international expansion that Miscavige keeps talking about is true, why doesnt he just get on with clearing the planet and ignore Marty altogether? Why not let Marty audit a few people and help some transition from life in the SO? What’s the big threat if there really are 10 million Scientologists and 10,000 orgs, missions and groups? Even if Marty audited 5 people every week, that’s only 250 a year, or .000025% of Miscavige’s 10 million. To take care of just the 2.5% of his 10 million the church doesnt want to handle, it would mean auditing 250,000 a year in the independent field. The figures just don’t add up.
Miscavige is watching the tide come in on his sandcastle empire. And while he is still trying to kick sand in the face of those around him so they cannot see the walls crumbling, and yells at his minions that they are SPs for failing to turn the tide, he knows its inevitable.
It sucks to be Miscavige.

Well, the 10,000 hits a day this site gets is probably going to double based on this mostly balanced article. So, for the people coming newly to this blog, let me correct the most glaring inaccuracy in the article concerning Scientology’s “creation story,” which actually goes back a lot further than when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Scientology’s creation story is contained in The Factors and here it is:
“(Summation of the considerations and examinations of the human spirit and the material universe completed between A.D. 1923 and 1953)
1. Before the beginning was a Cause and the entire purpose of the cause was the creation of effect.
2. In the beginning and forever is the decision and the decision is TO BE.
3. The first action of beingness is to assume a viewpoint.
4. The second action of beingness is to extend from the viewpoint, points to view, which are dimension points.
5. Thus there is space created, for the definition of space is: viewpoint of dimension. And the purpose of a dimension point is space and a point of view.
6. The action of a dimension point is reaching and withdrawing.
7. And from the viewpoint to the dimension points there are connection and interchange. Thus new dimension points are made. Thus there is communication.
8. And thus there is light.
9. And thus there is energy.
10. And thus there is life.
11. But there are other viewpoints and these viewpoints outthrust points to view. And there comes about an interchange amongst viewpoints; but the interchange is never otherwise than in terms of exchanging dimension points.

14. Many dimension points combine into larges gases, fluids or solids. Thus there is matter. But the most valued point is admiration, and admiration is so strong its absence alone permits persistence.
15. The dimension point can be different from other dimension points and thus can possess an individual quality. And many dimension points can possess a similar quality, and others can possess a similar quality unto themselves. Thus comes about the quality of classes of matter.
16. The viewpoint can combine dimension points into forms and the forms can be simple or complex and can be at different distances from the viewpoints and so there can be combinations of form. And the forms are capable of motion and the viewpoints are capable of motion and so there can be motion of forms.
17. And the opinion of the viewpoint regulates the consideration of the forms, their stillness or their motion, and these considerations consist of assignment of beauty or ugliness to the forms and these considerations alone are art.
18. It is the opinions of the viewpoints that some of these forms should endure. Thus there is survival.
19. And the viewpoint can never perish; but the form can perish.
20. And the many viewpoints, interacting, become dependent upon one another’s forms and do not choose to distinguish completely the ownership of dimension points and so comes about a dependency upon the dimension points and upon the other viewpoints.
21. From this comes a consistency of viewpoint of the interaction of dimension points and this, regulated, is TIME.
22. And there are universes.
23. The universes, then, are three in number: the universe created by one viewpoint, the universe created by every other viewpoint, the universe created by the mutual action of viewpoints which is agreed to be upheld – the physical universe.
24. And the viewpoints are never seen. And the viewpoints consider more and more that the dimension points are valuable. And the viewpoints try to become the anchor points and forget that they can create more points and space and forms. Thus comes about scarcity. And the dimension points can perish and so the viewpoints assume that they, too, can perish.

The manifestations of pleasure and pain, of thought, emotion and effort, of thinking, of sensation, of affinity, reality, communication, of behavior and being are thus derived and the riddles of our universe are apparently contained and answered herein. There IS beingness, but Man believes there is only becomingness.

The resolution of any problem posed hereby is the establishment of viewpoints and dimension points. the betterment of condition and concourse amongst dimension points, and, thereby, viewpoints, and the remedy of abundance or scarcity in all things, pleasant or ugly, by the rehabilitation of the ability of the viewpoint to assume points of view and create and uncreate, neglect, start, change and stop dimension points of any kind at the determinism of the viewpoint. Certainty in all three universes must be regained, for certainty, not data, is knowledge.
29. In the opinion of the viewpoint, any beingness, anything, is better than nothing, any effect is better than no effect, any universe better than no universe, any particle better than no particle, but the particle of admiration is best of all.
30. And above these things there might be speculation only. And below these things there is the playing of the game. But these things which are written here Man can experience and know. And some may care to teach these things and some may care to use them to assist those in distress and some may desire to employ them to make individuals and organizations more able and so give to Earth a culture of which we can be proud.

Stephen Hawking might object (though The Factors don’t even really contradict the Big Bang theory), and Christians might object, yet THIS is Scientology’s creation story.
It quite relieving to see more and more differentiation in descriptions of Scientology by journalists. The distancing of Scientology away from Miscavige’s version is very good to see.
It is entirely accurate and factual that one can be a Scientologist and have nothing but loathing for Miscavige and his psychotic organisation.

As soon as I saw the train of thought heading towards mentioning OTIII, I kind of blurred my eyes and “fast-forwarded” so that I could skip that part. Maybe not everyone in my situation can do this, so I was wondering, for the benefit of all: When you referred to the article’s descriptions of OTIII material as “juvenile”, does that mean that it would not be harmful to someone who has not done OTIII to read the whole article, or would it be better for those at my case level to just skip the link to the magazine article and read the comments on the blog?

Well, there’s no reason to worry about it, scaredy Church members to the contrary.
1. The stories are altered and simplified to a point they make no sense to people.
2. Then, you cannot restimulate someone with a misunderstood command. As a highly classified Auditor having audited thousands and thousands of
hours, I have observed this fact was invariable.
3. The Advanced III course pack explains very specifically the technical action that must not be done to avoid the person getting heavily
restimulated and sick. Chances that people do this while not being a well trained solo auditor are null.
4. Even better, hearing those altered and ridiculous stories, people laugh, and laughing is always a symptom of charge blowing off and pictures
destimulating, never the opposite.
So let’s not make fools of ourselves, when the subject is maliciously tackled by journalists, let’s not do like Church people who make a funny
show of it: “Oh ! no, no, no, you mustn’t say this, you mustn’t, mustn’t ! This is sacred for a Scientologist, you’re being very offensive to
me…” And pfuittt! off he goes, leaving the stage, hectically tearing off the mike.
I am not saying we should start to use this as bedtime story for kids, but it’s a matter of judgement.
Those materials don’t make any sense for anyone who thinks of himself as a piece of meat and who hasn’t a clue that he is a spirit, I mean with a
very precise technical definition of a spirit that is real to him and he can truly observe, not just think or believe subjectively. Most
materialistic people can’t even visualize it mentally, so perceiving it is even more out of reach.
In conclusion, while Chairman Tank and his OSA mouthpiece fight the problem to solve it. We don’t… we don’t fight the problem, we confront it.
Maybe this could be a good question to help them: “What problem are you trying to solve?”*

Not trying to derail or troll, but I always thought that Incident I was the Creation Theory of Scientology, with Incident II as described in the article being the equivalent of the Adam and Eve story in judeo-christianity.
Could someone explain how the Factors relate to Incident I? I think this can be done without providing any details of higher levels, so I hope this question is possible on this blog.
Also, as a note to British journalists: yeah I know that Engish libel laws scare you back from publishing details about the Hole. But really, Miscavige will not sue, he is too scared to do so.

I am glad you gave us an advance warning that the article contains a juvenile account of OT III material. I have not done the level, and I have no desire to read any account about it before I get to the level, if I ever do. Confidential materials are confidential for a reason, whether people with no knowledge of the subject are able to appreciate it or not. This ought to be respected. The truth and workability of the OT sections can be measured by their results and the amount of tone arm action gotten on the e-meter during solo auditing, which I am told is a phenomenal amount compared with the, say, 25 divisions downward of the tone arm on the meter that might be measured on the meter during a very successful, non-confidential auditing session between auditor and preclear in earlier levels. The preclear will feel wonderful after a session with that much tone arm action. (Reference: HCOB 25 September, 1963, Adequate Tone Arm Action).
By the way, the index for the 1976 edition of the technical volumes (HCOB’s, etc.) contains very extensive references to tone arm action. The index for the newer, “revised” technical volumes contains little, if any reference to tone arm action, according to my recollection of a few years ago. Is this another Miscavige covert technical degrade?
For people to bandy about data from the OT levels in a casual way, just to tell stories about it or to mock the subject seems to me to be to highly irresponsible and destructive, whether they realize it or not. As some have observed here, no one is going to benefit from the OT levels by just reading about them. They can only benefit by actually doing them (and not Miscavige altered and messed up levels either).

Guy James’s article in The Independent describes the Marty I know, respect and love. For all the reasons you chose this role as the capper to your life’s work, please know that your decision has benefitted so many people. Those include people like me who once thought I’d made peace with my past Scientology experiences, but could never quite turn away and move on.
As someone who’s been in and around and outside Scientology for decades now (it’s been forty years), “Scientology” remains a complicated subject. If it hadn’t been for you – and the other good-hearted people who spoke out so bravely in the St. Pete Times’s “Truth Rundown” videos and those who’ve spoken out here on your blog and elsewhere on the Internet – I’d never have begun unraveling the reasons why I left the church and started to understand how something that had once made sense to me no longer did.
Marty, to me you’re a hero. I find you guilty of only two crimes: Being here and communicating.

LRH’s creation story in regard to viewpoints and dimension points is near to the Buddhist idea of illusion. The Buddha’s teaching in the Theravada
tradition centers on the concept of motion in the physical universe.( NOTE:
other Buddhist traditions may have DIFFERENT interpretations as not all of the Pali Canon is universally accepted.) Mind and motion would thus
be similar to LRH’s “decision to be”. Theta/Mest is not a factor at the gateway to Nirvana.(Nibbana).
The central difference between LRH and Theravada Buddhism is in the concept of the void or emptiness. It is a very subtle point but Theravada Buddhism has the concept of ‘no soul’ or void This concept is misunderstood in the west. In actual fact, the Buddha was silent on the issue of the existence of the spirit. Silence was necessary because he urged us to put an end to the stress of the physical universe which is by nature impermanent. In Buddhist cosmology, the highest non-material beings can exist for 84,000 eons(big bangs). This is a very long time. The Buddha was very specific in urging the rejection of theoretical arguments.
LRH said “There IS beingness, but Man believes there is only becomingness.” The Buddha would thus be silent on this point.
Once , when the Buddha was silent on the question of the spirit, his chief attendant got embarrassed and tried to answer for the Buddha.
The Buddha had to explain basically that he did not take sides on this issue.
In the Theravada tradition, we center on the NOW of existence and training in this practice is really all we have been doing for 2,600 years since the Buddha walked on earth.

As for the OT III data – blurring ones eyes is a good idea but also knowing that whatever is printed is going to be “off” to a greater or lesser degree because the person got the info not by doing the level but by reading the material. So, I never discuss OT III with the uninformed and greatly respect those who chose NOT to read it online.
In the same way — those who talk or write about Tibetan buddhist visualization never duplicate the essence because they haven’t DONE it —
Words just point to something — they aren’t it.
Marty — every day my own life and world expands thanks to finding more and more of my old lost friends … and learning how they’ve navigated through their lives — only to find ourselves full circle.

They got the title right in the hardcopy edition. On the cover of the mag it says “CAUGHT ON CAMERA: What happened when one man fell out with the Church of Scientology.” This is superimposed on a very creepy picture of a squirrel buster filming away. Then the actual title of the article inside the mag is “Meet Scientology’s Heretic.” Just above this it says “For 27 years Marty Rathbun was a key player in the world’s most secretive religion – even mentoring top celebrities including Tom Cruise. Then he left and things turned ugly…..” This is all on the right hand page. On the left hand side is a full page photo of Marty standing with his materials in the background. It’s quite impressive.
The end goal of Scn is an individual who can as-is Scn – and his whole track. Most confuse the goal of survival of the organization, with the goal of Scn, so you get faulty admin scales. The org is just a via, a means, not an end. I posted something under Mike Rinder’s VV interview under a conversation between Jim Logan and LDW.

One of the best articles I’ve read in a long time. Marty you must have established a really good reality and communicated very well for so much to get so duplicated. Congrats! (It’s also one of the better newspapers I’ve read – their articles are above normal fare.)

Juvenile simply means it is without context and intended to make look silly. The import of the warning was to alert those who believe it could be harmful. The article itself makes scant mention – far more has been on national and international tv (e.g. bbc) many times over. The side bar goes into more detail.
Marty’s house is one of that places from where I am not withdrawing my anchor-points, It is nice and so refreshing to every once in a while appear in that sane, theta environment. I visit there sometimes quietly to enjoy the clear space. I wonder if Chiquita notices my presence. 🙂
Thanks Dan, Some of the biggest wins I ever had in Scientology was doing a course at a mission in South Jersey on the Factors and we had to clay demo each of the Factors!
Re-reading them now, I was struck by the fact that DM does not allow 4 and 5. There are others too, but these two stuck in my mind.

He controls people in Scientology by not allowing them to have a Point of View because to do so he would lose control.
Marty, what intrigues me is how people like Miscavige, and their corporate equivalents, rise to these positions of absolute power? What is it, psycologically, that gives them this edge? They seem to ‘rise above’ their faults, but somehow manage to avoid attack from below. Intriguing – clearly there is something I lack in my experience of corporate life…

Scientology has a broad array of narratives. It is difficult to align them with judeo-christianity. The difference I see is that narratives such as Incident I
are used in the auditing process for specific purposes. Listening to almost all of Hubbard’s tapes during my time in Scientology was extensive.
There are even unpublished tapes which I listened to at the Flag Land Base. Some of these earlier tapes are of very poor audio quality, but they can be quite revealing. For example, there are tapes about the nature of the sex act which miscavige would have a difficult time explaining and which would not sit well with some celebrities.
An old series of lectures called “The Time Track of Theta” are especially revealing. These are not published as a package anymore. In these tapes
LRH traces the roots of Scientology back to a central source of thetans.
It has some, but slight, similarity to eastern religions but it is not Buddhist.
The Factors, shown above in this thread, are like an overall statement.
Hope this helps. It takes a lot of time to disentangle all of the Scientology narratives.

The statement above shows to me how insane the cult is. It’s like you have to swear alegiance to the all the writings to be a Scientologist even though LRH said that it was only true for you if you yourself observed it and if it wasn’t true for you then it isn’t true. Apparently, it ALL has to be true or you cannot be a Scientologist.
Another thing I noticed is that they like to use the word “appalled”, “bitter apostate” frequently. I think they need some new writers.

And even scientists are speculating that perhaps their “may” have been something before the “Big Bang” – perhaps an infinite series of Big Bangs, Big Collapses, Big Bangs, etc. Not to mention the concept of infinite universes. What was it? There are infinite universes, each with a copy of you, except that instead of going right on that road, you went left, or some such. Perhaps a blessing is that it is very technical. I have never seen copies on the ‘net that were accurate, and NO ONE gets the point, which is good. I did my OT III in 1986, and I was never exposed to it prior (almost, once, in a magazine, but I skipped over it). It is regretful that it was leaked out: kind of like the Mormon underwear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_garment), it is easily ridiculed and taken completely out of context.

Ananon – I never associated either incident with a Creation Theory of Scn. My interpretation is that Scn is a conclusion to prior religion and philosophy – not conclusion in the sense of an “end” but in the sense of the resolution of a mystery and the start of a new beginning. Christianity for example was formed in a less advanced culture than ours scientifically. It is not that it is not true – many devout Christians view it as allegoricy to convey a message of love and hope. The truth of Christianity is made painfully evident by its absence from the Co$. To me, The Factors represents Scn’s Creation Theory, but creation is very prevalent in all of us.
That’s very good, it jogged my memory to a 50s tape that explained that to take the view that Scientology is only a therapy is to take a very narrow view of Scientology itself. It can and does give the ability to be able to even run out Scientology though. What is left after that is a good question, ‘a creator of games’ would probably be a good starting point, responsibility of self is another. These things must give beings like Miscavige the horrors, as their only game is ‘to dominate’.
Faulty Admin scales is a very apt description of the result of adopting a fixed viewpoint (solution).
I think it should be noted here that Ron Hubbard himself seems to have changed his mind about OT III Incident II needing to remain “Confidential” since he was trying in the late 70’s and early 80’s to get this story made into a general release movie – “Revolt in the Stars”.

That “beingness/becomingness” idea is embraced in the Factors with the first few of them, defining beingness (assumption of viewpoint, extending points to view) and say #24 “And the viewpoints try to become the anchor points…” idea.
Theta is in fact a true Static, capable of considerations. It isn’t located, not in space, not in time. Those are manifestations of postulates, that there are particles and thus dimension from a considered point of view to the particles and that they will persist.
Take the utter simplicity of one’s own universe; think of a cat – who is looking at it, and fundamentally, who is creating it. In that simple demonstration is an example of “beingness/becomingness”.
What’s the matter? Don’t you believe in resurrection of the spirit? Isn’t that the central lesson of Easter?
Dan, thank you for posting this. The factors are my favorite piece of Scientology scripture. I have solved more problems, had more awakenings and case gain as a result of the factors. Each time I read them, I get blown out, some by rehab of earlier successful applications resulting in life changing wins and some as a result of new cogs, viewing things from a different time and space than I did the last.

The Factors are the “creation story”. Incidents are just that, incidents. They occur at a point in time and space, which are themselves the result of considerations – postulates – things “posted” “out there”, with the creation of “out there” defined in the Factors.
It’s harder to mentally tussle with this than it is to simply get what’s called an Objectives Rundown with Opening Procedure By Duplication to Exterior following a nice array of Communication, Control and Havingness procedures.
Time, and a “time track” along which incidents may lay, is itsef basically a consideration, with the motion of particlses in space sort of “mapping” it out, tracking mechanically so to speak, the consideration. Awareness of self, as a Static entity, a cause point, with no position in space or time, no wavelength, no matter has no substitute for knowing how to know what this is all about.
Incident II, I or any incident, is merely a “day in the life” of that which is described in the Factors.
The story is spread over 12 pages of the hard copy magazine. The pic on the front cover is of a cult goon complete with camera, silly hat and t-shirt taken from the inside of (Marty’s?) car. The actual title on the cover is “CAUGHT ON CAMERA” subtitled “What happened when one man fell out with the Church of Scientology”. It is very clear from the copy that the insanity emenates from the cult, NOT Scientology itself or Indies. There are quotes from our very own Sam and others. I consider it a balanced well written and reasoned piece.
BUT – Marty, oh dear Marty. It says quote: “…writing a memoir of his career in Scientology. He hopes to publish it LATER THIS YEAR.” (emphasis added). I was promised Spring – I demand Spring!

In many ways I think that the exposure and expanding support (brought about via the blogs) regarding the differentiation of Scientology and the church has come as a relief to many of the media outlets who for years have been told that their observations of cult like behavior are not true.
Not only are we running out the engram for those who have been parishioners, we are running it out for the press. And, isn’t it interesting that the press supports the Independents for the most part yet continues to attach the church. The church continues to create antagonism by saying “not true” and the media has almost gone into boredom over it, reporting it because their legal teams say they must do so.

I HOPE that independents do have accurate copies of OT III because if I ever get there it will be with an Independent, certainly not in the now All Corrupt and Altered Demon Church of Miscavology. While I agree it is regrettable that it was leaked out, I am glad if what has become the Demon Church does not now have a monopoly on the true, actual materials, as developed and written up by LRH. Of course, with that organization there is no knowing now what you are getting. Is it Ron? Or is it some mucked up alteration that has been messed with by the Supreme Potentate, His Insane Psychosisness, David Miscavige?
I would never look for the materials on the internet, and I hope that trustworthy Independents have them in accurate and unaltered form for future use.
Ron, of course, felt that broad dissemination of the OT III data would be harmful, as where he expressed on Ron’s Journal 67, “Please forgive me if I don’t tell you about it more detail, because it just might make you sick too.” (Or words to that effect). I believe Ron was also motivated by a belief that broad dissemination of his discoveries to unprincipled persons would be dangerous because of potential misuse. I recall him referring in a policy letter to never again permitting an epidemic of implanting to recur. It is ironic that Dictator Miscaphony specializes in nothing other than techniques that either are or are compatible with bringing about implants: Hypnotic techniques, fixation of attention, use of fear and duress, yelling and screaming at staff and public, Severe Attitude Readjustments, physical beatings, and so on.

in the Theravada tradition, the Buddha never answered the question in regard to the spirit. It is so well documented; there was a raging debate at the time more than 2,600 years ago. He was really pressed to answer the question and always declined. A monk even threatened to quit the order and the Buddha was still silent.

The Factors are the “creation story” of Scientology, for lack of better words. They answer the question of “How Things Came to Be”, while the Scientology Axioms answer the questions of “What Is”.
These two relatively brief writings in Scientology, when fully “grokked”, can be life changing.
Others have ably supplied an answer to this. Let me add that specifics of incidents don’t matter. What does matter is that people have attention, knowingly or (more insidiously) unknowingly, on the past, and it helps people to uncover and resolve these points. There were a lot of people affected by the genocide of Armenians or the genocide in Ruanda, and to the people who lived (or died) though them, there is a LOT of attention, grief, anger, pain, etc. However, if you grew up in Cleveland, you are unaffected (at least directly) by these. So, someone in Cleveland may not understand how devastating these events were to the people who were caught up in it.
Incidents One and Two may or may not have happened, and if they did, may or may not have happened to you.Who’s to tell?

To a true psychotic being (whatever being is left): An Auditor would be the most destructive (psychotic) person on the planet; Artists of power to uplift life and communicate are labeled degraded and targeted for disempowerment, and all tinker bells, dolphins, and sparkle ponies must be put in jars, pronto, and covered with burlap because their joy is scary. OUCH. It must hurt to be that warped. 100% inverted opposite of truth.
Knowledge conferred by initiation will be in context. So I allow for the possibility that despite knowing the words of this, nevertheless it could carry additional meaning when it is conferred in accordance with the rites prescribed by the author. (This is if ever I consider going through the process to find out formally.)
However, this story is an easy source of attack by the media for the simple reason in the cold light of day, whether out of context or not, it sounds completely ridiculous. To be frank, it merely backs up critics claim that all you really need to know about LRH was that he was a science fiction writer.
Despite this, you would think there would be better ways of handling questions about it than Tommy Davis demonstrated by pulling off his mic and storming off the Bashir Nightline interview.
As a side point in that same interview, Davis said DM’s dog dressed in a commander’s uniform was ‘ridiculous’ – but he didn’t deny it.

It is so interesting to me that what the corp church calls bad PR, turns out to give correct information about our religion.
Pope on a box (should be pope on a rope) has the absolute arrogance to criticize Marty, Mike and all of us when HE was responsible for the safety of our tech I was shocked to find out anything has been made available on Wikileaks through court records.
The good thing is the tech is alive on the web for proper use.
I am curious if any Independents are saving their old material in tape form to CD? I asked recently in response to a corp church email if The Academy Levels are on CD. They said “no”.
“Scientologists are true to the writings of L. Ron Hubbard.” OK, that means that David Miscavige is not remotely a Scientologist, since the list of PLs and HCOBs he is not true to is very hefty. How about all the corporate Scientologists forking over boatloads in off-Policy donations? The auditors and C/Ses putting OTs back through all their objectives? Or the Church PRs that blatantly lie to the media? Can we find an actual Scientologist, by that definition, anywhere in the corporate radical Church? No.
The reason the story of Jesus is so compelling is that people experience the things Jesus experienced in their lives too. Jesus provides a model. When I had cancer I felt so dreadful during chemo that I actually found it helpful to meditate on Jesus on the cross, and offering my suffering to join with his. (An idea I got from Mother Theresa.) Strange thing was that when I was completely focussed on being with Jesus on the cross, all the pain and sickness disappeared. When eventually tests showed the cancer was gone the only way I can explain the effect on me is by identifying with the resurrection. So I think it is incredibly appropriate to have Marty’s story in the paper over the Easter weekend. Marty is experienceing crucifixion but I can see the resurrection coming. And I don’t know if any of us have any inkling of how big it’ll end up being! Thanks from us in the UK, Marty.

Grasshopper, your response makes perfect sense to me. Bashir actually asked Tommy Davis about the ‘public’ (not private) faith he had. I would have thought that a perfectly appropriate response would be say that ‘There are parts of the scientology faith that are private and that scientologists do not discuss and I respectfully decline to comment further.’ …or just stick to ‘no comment’ as you say…
Davis’s response in this interview looks highly defensive and, if I didn’t know better, he is hiding embarrasment which manifests itself as ‘offence’.
The only thing on my mind is that LRH is supposed to have said ‘attack’ and never ‘defend’. If this is so, the belligerent nature of the C0S towards critics (e.g. Marty/Mike for that matter) is really only following the founder’s wishes/guidelines. Is it true that LRH did in fact adminster quite severe physical punishments on his ships (overboarding). If this is so, then the course of conduct is carried over by senior management in the form of beatings is in effect really only following the pattern set by the founder?
Please don’t get me wrong – I think there is a lot that LRH’s basics writings have to commend their application. I am just trying to reconcile where critics appear to have their strongest cases.

If you want to see the (paraphrased) “attack, don’t defend” strategy properly executed, look no further than Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder. Look at how Marty worked with the so-called media company called “Squirrel Buster Productions.” Look at how both Mike and Marty work with the various news reporters, etc. The policy is basically, “don’t be a pussy.” Don’t roll over just because some guy is mean to you.
A great example of the proper use of this policy (in my opinion – Marty feel free to comment, of course!) is Marty’s post “An Open Letter to Tony Ortega” in which he took Tony to task for naming Ron the number 1 person “harming” Scientology. https://markrathbun.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/an-open-letter-to-tony-ortega/ Marty did not back down, even though Tony has been and continues to be as on “our side” as he can be.
But another thing to know is that in order for this policy to make sense, the church has to be doing its job, and only its job. If some reporter comes into my local church (back in the day) with blood on his mind, and all we are doing is drills and auditing sessions, and then the reporter writes a hack job (as happened in 1976 when ABC did this huge “expose” on the church, and ridiculed our use of using dolls in training (the purpose of which is to keep the coach in “coach mode” rather than start running the process he is supposed to be coaching)), then you have to wonder, what is the reporter’s ulterior motive? Sensationalism? Don’t boost your ratings on my back.
But this is not the case now. Mr. David Miscavige has built a violent organization. This is not from following Ron’s policy – this shit is all Miscavige. If the reporter has a legitimate beef, then the motive of the reporter is no longer the problem. Miscavige is the problem.

I remember Heber handling inquiries about OT data by telling a joke and changing the subject something else. So simple. The press loved him and didn’t often emphasize stuff like that in their stories.
By contrast, it is amazing but true that the “Squirrel Busters” have made themselves “The Face of the Church of Scientology”. Their story apparently has “legs”. It seems the actions of those idiots and similar actions by the COS encourage the press to put their attention on more things about Scientology (or altered things) that might be thought of as strange by the general public instead writing about the good it can and does do to enhance people’s lives.

matter, it could cause havoc, if not in life, certainly
in auditing prior to those levels.
I recently asked an independent Class XII, who audits in the field,
what his experience was with this and he told me that he sees both,
with his preclears, some are troubled by it, others are not.
I feel, care should be taken for this material to stay secure.
That it was widely circulated is no reason to continue
doing that.
I know many Scientologists that as you did, shun it before
they are ready and I think it is wise to do that.
On top of that, for most PreOTs still in the church,
independents who don’t keep that material safe,
are a definitive NO, NO and this could be a reason

Robert Plant, who wrote the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ lyrics, has always denied any Scientology connection with the opening lines claiming that they just popped into his head from nowhere.

George, Those tapes were part of a series of lectures which was later released in full as ‘Milestone One’. Definitely a few of the most interesting lectures IMO, though there are so many to choose from.

I completely agree with your advice regarding reading confidential upper level material. What LRH said in RJ67 is good enough for me. Better safe than messed up and sorry. Besides, what would be to gain by going out gradient?
Fortunately, I do know from experience that Ron designed the Bridge on a gradient so that what is keyed in with auditing can then be keyed out or erased, with the person being audited then experiencing a resurgence and increase in well-being as a result. By going out-gradient, there is a chance they could just get keyed in and left there, which would be undesirable as well as unnecessary. I am completely on the same page with you regarding this.

I always find it amusing that the church can’t follow its own lies. In that one article, Marty is being criticised for saying that the Xenu story is allegorical rather than literal- this proves that he is a squirrel or a heretic. Yet, in the John Sweeny documentary, the usual suspect celebs act like they have never heard of the story and it is complete falsehood. Well, which is it??
It makes much more sense to simply say that all religions have their creation myths and live it at that, but that makes too much sense. I know denial has been the game plan, but it is so overused and unbelievable with the internet information (whether true or untrue), it is no longer a good strategy. Still, the church’s worst enemy is its self.
Regarding the wall of fire story…the story itself is just another space opera story and isn’t necessarily going to cause any more restimulation than pictures of exploding volcanoes on DMSMH, or watching Star Wars. Running the process of the level, when not set up and trained for it, is what can cause a problem of magnitude. Allowing the process of the level to be randomly distrubuted for anyone to read is suppressive.
My guess is one of Plant’s many giirlfirends was into Scientology, and her dissemination efforts slipped into his head.

Robert Plant was disseminated to, by various Scientology women, in the last 1960s, including getting a quick tour of the old CC LA and meeting Yvonne Jentzsch.
I was at ASI 92-95, and Suzy Watson Taylor worked at ASI those years, I asked her about the rumors and she says basically what you say Hartley, but that how he got the idea for “…she’s buying a stairway to heaven…” could be circumstantially subconsciously derived.
Plant came to ASI and visited Suzy in the early 1990s, and whenever he was in LA, he’d often look Suzy up and she’d go out with him, she told me that. They were friends since the late 1960s. And he knew she was into Scientology for life. Both Suzy and the ASI receptionist (later my boss at ASI) both told me about Plant visiting ASI just to come see Suzy.
