How the FBI Investigation Tanked

The purported import of the headline story in Monday’s Tampa Bay Times is that it tells how the FBI investigation into David Miscavige went belly up.   While the story pretty accurately chronicles parts of the FBI’s human trafficking investigation into David Miscavige and the church of Scientology, inexplicably the Times chose to ignore many facts on how the investigation went south.  That is despite the fact that Tony Ortega (then of the Village Voice) reported on many of those facts nearly a year ago, FBI Investigation of Scientology: Already Over Before We Even Heard of It.    The Times also highlights a bizarre, discredited explanation for FBI inaction revolving around Larry Wright’s February 2011 New Yorker story.

Ortega has detailed the inaccuracy/omissions in the Times story tonight on his blog, FBI/Scientology story at the Underground Bunker.  That is a must-read for anyone interested in the truth of the matter.

Nonetheless, you will probably find the Times story interesting as it details a bizarre cops and robbers tale only Scientology Inc. could generate in this day and age.

Scientology Inc. Private Eyes Come Clean

The Tampa Bay Times has published a rather startling expose’,  Scientology Inc. Private Eyes Come Clean.

Notice that David Miscavige’s denials confirm pretty much the entire story.

When Paul and Greg asked CO OSA INT (Linda Hammill, head of Scientology Inc.’s intelligence operation) what the church was going to do when I exposed this operation in 2009 to the Times (see, segment ‘Spying on Pat Broeker’ at Marty Rathbun Tampa Times videos), she said that David Miscavige’s plan was to “blame it on Marty.”   Greg and Paul knew then and there that Miscavige and his crime syndicate had lost any sense it might have once had.

Incidentally, this week Greg and Paul helped a documentary film crew video an ongoing Scientology Inc. electronic surveillance operation in my current neighborhood.

“The Patina of Terror is Losing its Luster”

Folks, fasten your safety belts before you tie into this duo of gang buster articles.

Three of  the most competent, courageous journalists to have tackled the beast now known as Scientology Inc. over the past several years have filed reports this evening that are already shaking the foundations of Miscavige’s bunker.

Mark Collette of the Corpus Christi Caller Times broke the story, Latest Scientology legal battle unfolds in Coastal Bend as private investigators sue church.    The biggest news story of South Texas in the past two years has suddenly risen from a nearly year-long slumber and has grown legs worthy of Godzilla.

Almost simultaneously to Collette’s report, Tom Tobin and Joe Childs of the Tampa Bay Times weighed with, Church of Scientology paid two private investigators millions to trail David Miscavige’s rival, lawsuit claims.

UPDATE 9/23 A.M.:  Tony Ortega has also reported for the Dallas Morning News

Tobin and Childs note that today’s story corroborates and vindicates the 2009 testimony of me and Mike Rinder in the Times.  In particular, Mr. Arnold and Mr Marrick verify this history that I told Childs and Tobin in 2009, Rathbun video the Broeker Operation, click on the segment titled Spying On Pat Broeker.

To recap, first Mike Rinder corroborated every detail of my story.  Nonetheless, Miscavige supplied the Times with sworn affidavits by long-time Commanding Officer OSA Int Kurt Weilland, and Corporate Scientology “lawyer” (and unindicted co-conspirator US vs Mary Sue Hubbard) Kendrick Moxon denying our story.

The Lawsuit

I have said it from the beginning, and I’ll say it to the end:  David Miscavige, if you tell the truth it becomes your past, if you lie it becomes your future.

David Miscavige will rue the day he crossed the Nueces (river).

Oh yeah, ain’t it sweet to see Sugar Ray Jeffrey back in the ring?

Miscavige Still Lying About the Headleys

Well, they even gotta lie when the truth would serve them better.

Please see the Tampa Bay Times coverage of the Headley suit fiasco reported on here and the Village Voice earlier today.

In particular see this statement by David Miscavige church of Scientology Inc. spokesperson Karin Pouw:

The Headleys asked the church to allow them to pay the fee in four monthly installments, but the church said no, they said. The church received no such proposal, Pouw said.

Now, please compare that to a letter the same Karin Pouw sent on church of Scientology Inc. letterhead to Vanity Fair a few days earlier, and particularly this passage here:

 Mr. Headley claimed he was incapable of paying the court-ordered costs to the Church.  Within days of losing his case, Mr. Headley’s attorney represented that his client could only pay $1,000 in total. Then he offered $1,000 a month for 30 months, reflecting Mr. Headley’s lack of funds.
Miscavige, did Marc make an installment proposal?

Or, Dave, didn’t he make an installment proposal?

As the late great Earle Cooley would say, how do you want to leave it?

“The fundraisers involved have no recollection of the incident”

Ok, I’m catching up this Sunday morning.  I was greeted with this little number on the St Pete Times website, “Another 50,000”.   This is the response Brian Culkin gets after stepping up and sharing important history: “The fundraisers involved have no recollection of the incident.”   Well Miscavige, who are the fundraisers you now acknowledge did work Brian over?   Why did you not allow Tom and Joe to question them?   I guess the holocaust never happened either – since apparently your institution cannot remember two years ago, let alone seventy years.

Message to Miscavige’s Fundraisers:  Scientology can help with that inability to recollect.

“The way to do better is to get big,” David Miscavige

That one line from the latest (Part III) of the St Petersburg Times Money Machine series says it all.   To Miscavige, being the suppressive person that he is, there is only one way to make himself “get big”.  That is, systematically reducing the size of everyone else.

Please see all articles in the latest installment at the above link.  Tobin and Childs have outdone themselves.  The sheer number of witnesses and their clear corroboration of one another gives corporate Scientology but one route, the most absurd, incredible, unbelievable denials to date.  A tipping point I believe has been reached this evening.  Corporate Scientology has zero credibility from here on out.  Miscavige, in my view, has now spent every last dime of credibility capital that other, conscientious staff managed to build up for the church of Scientology over the decades. In my opinion, it is all gone, spent, ever last dime of it. There is not one thin dime of credibility left.

Time to pick up the pieces and get the show on the road folks.  The matinee is over and there ain’t no more showings scheduled.

“Pure and Simple Blackmail”

Reference:  The Money Machine, St Petersburg Times.

Tony Ortega at the Village Voice weighed in on the Money Machine series in the St Petersburg Times,  Scientology’s Sale Pitch: “Pure and Simple Blackmail.”  Tony made some interesting observations.  One in particular deserves highlighting:

One of the most frequent questions we get about Scientology from people we meet is some variation of this: “You’ve written that the church is actually pretty small and losing people every day. So where is all this money coming from for new buildings?”

We have to admit, we never really had a very good answer for that. Until now.

The SP Times series, with most of it still to come, has already made us much more aware of how the “regging” process works, and how Scientologists constantly endure a hard-sell approach not only to pay for auditing services, but to make outright donations for new buildings, for memberships, and for books they already have copies of.

I take that as a strong validation of the work of Tom Tobin and Joe Childs and their dozens of sources.  Since the mid 09 Truth Rundown series in the Times, Miscavige’s strategy has been to ignore facts, ignore reality, and make nothing of his own criminal conduct by constructing a BIG LIE.   That lie was stated in its most blatantly over-the-top fashion in response to the Money Machine series:

 The fact is that the church has expanded more in the past five years than in its previous 50, with new churches opening across the globe and our social and humanitarian programs extending our help across the planet on a weekly basis.

As we have known from the outset, this is brashest BIG LIE imaginable.  I am glad to see that Tobin and Child’s work has put this lie to rest in such credible fashion that others are beginning to recognize.
