D.C. Independent – Tom Felts

Tom Felts has been very active as an independent Scientologist for years in the DC area. Tom has contributed a lot of good advice and wisdom to my blog which is very much appreciated. He has also brought his great sense of humor – he does stand up comedy as a hobby. Laughter, being a universally accepted valid therapy, is welcome here. Tom’s brand of wit is refreshing – satrical, but with class.  Tom’s insouciance is refreshing. For those in the greater DC area in need of a terminal to help you navigate your way through shark infest disconnect territory, I can’t think of a better equiped person than Tom. Independents going to the nation’s capital on business or vacation will have their lives enhanced by making his acquaintance. Here is Tom’s statement:

I was a CL V staff member for close to 15 years, and have had many great wins applying LRH tech (both Red on White and Green on White) to myself and others. I have found many answers to many questions through the application of LRH Tech, and really enjoy helping others through the same. There is a lot of “Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt” out there concerning LRH, Scn Tech, the “Church of Scientology” and so on, and if questions can be answered and rationality resumed, then I consider the job done.

I would also love to see some real delivery being done, on whatever level can be achieved. It will depend upon resources at hand as to what we can accomplish, but I am a trained HPCSC and Word Clearer.

I was a fairly new staff member back when David Mayo (what is it with these DM guys, btw?) was declared. There was an SO ED issued at that time that contained a purported excerpt from an LRH advice that said, in part “You cats better start learning to spot SP’s…” I did find it remarkable that someone who had trained with and under LRH would be found at this late date to be an “SP”, but I was still naive in that respect and thought organizational Scn had to do with case gain and betterment, not Stalinesqe purges, so I filed that datum in the back of my mind and went on with my post.

Fast forward a number of years. I had been removed from post by an SO mission with NO justice actions. I took an LOA and requested a Comm Ev. The Comm Ev never happened. I returned from my LOA after 6 months, and was sent to LA for Tech Training. It was revelatory to me in a number of ways. The biggest revelation was a brief face to face meeting with David Miscavige, where we passed each other in the hallway in PAC Base.  I “knew” at that point that I would never be able to peacefully co-exist with that being in that state. The earlier LRH advice flashed in my mind, and I resolved at that point to quietly finish up my contractual obligations and move on, which I did.

The incidents that occurred publicly in the following years only confirmed my earlier observation: 1) The IRS win, which was a huge group win in the US, was used to promote an individual, instead of the group; 2) The confidentiality of the “Upper Level” material was fully breached (a primary purpose of the SO was to protect such data); 3) The death of Lisa McPherson, at the Flag Land Base, no less. Tech was out in a major way, which means that ethics had gone out earlier; 4) The “Golden Age of Tech”. “When people can’t get results from what they think is standard practice, they can be counted upon to squirrel to some degree. The most trouble in the past two years came from orgs where an executive in each could not assimilate straight Scientology.” – KSW 1. Need I say more?; 5) The positioning of DM as ‘source’. This was done both through visuals in different magazines, and his “Basics” evolution. You can no longer buy an LRH book at a Scn Bookstore. Think about that. 6) Confirmation from multiple independent sources of Miscavige’s internal “Terror Regime”. There were early hints of this coming down the management lines with the introduction of “SRA’s” or “Severe Reality Adjustments”. The true extent of the abuse is only now coming to light.

When I left I had attested to Clear. While basically successful in life, I had things going on that I knew needed to be handled. I have since completed Solo I-III, received OT IV, and all 3 L’s outside the RTC regime. I can only say that it has been a life saver in many respects. Late last year I went for a routine medical checkup and was found to have high blood sugar and high blood pressure, as well as being overweight. Through a combination of dietary changes, self-education, addressing of emotional issues (auditing) and some discipline, I have dropped 30 lbs, my blood pressure is normal, and my blood sugar is completely under control. My primary physician wants to make a model patient out of me, as he has never seen these changes in a person before.

But apart from the physical personal changes, there were other dynamics in play. As an early contributor to ESMB just getting an itsa line in to people out there brought forth an amazing amount of information, TA, true data and in some cases healing. Breaking the conspiracy of silence is the way to fight oppression. Once others realize it wasn’t “just them” the train starts rolling. It was only after the Anon scene burst forth that the noise and troll cannons arrived and tried to bury that board. But the stories fed the Anon phenom, both on ESMB and Ex Scn Kids. While I could speculate at length as to what that was *really* all about in the theta universe, just let me say that in the early days of FCDC (where I was on staff) those people would all be on a comm-course eventually if not right away. Perhaps it is the 4th dynamic protesting the “lack of results”?

I was declared shortly after the first Anonymous protest in Feb. of last year. I went to it as sort of “my own Private Switzerland”, (a neutral party to both sides). I was called by the EO a few days later, where we had a very long conversation about LRH tech, wins, incidents that indicated major problems of mutual interest (the death of Stacy Moxon Meyer, for example; Carla Moxon was one of my very first auditors) and my position vis a vis management, which was that DM was an SP, and since I had no avenue to handle that, I had to dis-connect. My declare came out 2 days later. “We have to protect the group” was what I was told.

My upset is that I do want others to have the same wins that I did.  At least the same opportunity to have them. And I don’t see that happening.  And since the group is no longer there to preserve, protect, deliver the tech and verify the results, then I shouldn’t really care. But for some reason I still do. Maybe I will get that handled some day…. Maybe WE can get that handled some day.

Hopefully this isn’t too long, and gives you a better idea of where I am coming from.

“You can no longer buy an LRH book at a Scn Bookstore.”

    What??? Can you clarify?

I have been off lines for a couple of years so I may have missed something during that time.

  2. What a write up Tom! Welcome to the lighter side. I would love to have been a fly on the wall to see the reaction when you told the E/O that DM was an SP! Fantastic stuff.

  3. Tom,

Thank you very much, I got that 🙂

I know for a fact that many of the things you write here resonate with me and probably with others as well.

    Glad to have you aboard!

  4. Hey Marty,
Was there anything in my comment that you considered offensive? I can always publish it in several other forums and ask what that might have been.

  5. Tom’s not only a stand-up comedian, he’s also a stand-up Scientologist.
I wish more would have the same insight and integrity to stand up and make their voices heard.

    Tom;

Great to have you on the team.

    I say, yes WE can.

    Best to you;

  7. Welcome Tom to the fun side of Scientology as LRH always envisioned.

You are right about not being able to find any pure Scientology book in any part of CoS since DM (SP) almost altered LRH’s policies and tech and re-released them for Scientologists.

But I am glad to see great and on Source people such as Marty exist outside of the CoS.

Eldon. I sent you an email. It was an ad hominem attack on individuals serving no purpose but to belittle them. You are free to post wherever you’d like. We don’t do that here.

  9. This post held one gem after another, thank you !!!

-> *Once others realize it wasn’t “just them” the train starts rolling.*

The observations you list 1 – 6 covers some major HUH? moments I had, too.

What about the recent DVD with a gold festooned DM invalidating 50 years of LRH publishing? Thumping the pulpit and dripping arrogance, DM announces only NOW the new books are right and no on had gotten anything they have ever thought they got.

An hour of pomp and ceremony, with close up shots of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes applauding, as DM castigates and denigrates all “idiots and dimwits” (para phrase) who have come before him.

Then, formidable covertness, he *informs* the assembly they didn’t get a thing out of old books …but doing so with the smoothest maneuver, like he’s pulling a group WH because he KNOWS the books (generality) never made sense to anyone before now (generality), but it’s all okay because now (since he has saved the day) they will.

    *shudder*

It’s quite a study to really really look and listen to that DVD (out this year I think?)

That said, YES! Let’s get SOME DELIVERY HAPPENING!! ❤

  10. Timing is everything. A good comedian knows that;) More will and are.

  11. Thank you. I appreciate your comm and totally feel the same way about feeling that the Tech may be lost within the C of S. I for one, doubt that I will ever set foot in the place again, and certainly not under the extant regime.

I remember when it was fun to hang out at the local org. Then it got weird, then David Mayo got busted, then things were OK again for a short while, and now here we are again. I hope that DM will get busted too. But it doesn’t seem likely.

    V. Your summation of the “golden age of knowledge” event is spot on.

  13. I know I posted this before…but a distinction really needs to be made between Scientolgoy (the real Scientology) and….

We need to pull back the curtain on DM and the ™ watered down substitute which is WIZARDOLOGY, *not* Scientology.

Since Art is above all a wonderful metaphor for Truth, the ending continues … When Dorothy clicks her heels, and it’s the power of our own intention, of theta of the soul…and the lion always had courage, and the tin man always had a heart and the scarecrow always had a brain… And it was the THETA that liberated, not the SMOKE AND MIRROR oppressive wizardy.

When I see the current Spokes presence of the (not) “Church”, it resembles the very beginning of this clip. It’s ANTI theta!!

Ta DAH…Wizardology (the opposite of Scientology)

  14. Thanks for supporting this Tom, your reasoning is sound.

  15. Well Tom, it sounds like we are all joining the ranks of YOU, since it could hardly be the other way round — you had the amazing foresight and confront to spot the truth all the way back then.

I’m going to use the vernacular when I say: you have real bollocks man! (that’s balls to you)man!

  16. Tom,
You have hit so many nails on the head in this post. You have made DC an anchor point for thetans who are on this route. I LOVED your write-up. Indication after indication, just beautiful.

  17. Tom, thank you for making yourself known and doing what you are doing. I want others to have the same wins that I had too, and that is EXACTLY why I’m on board. I don’t see that going away any time soon, and you are a very decent man for giving a damn! Hopefully we’ll all meet up sometime in the future. 🙂

  18. V,
Aside from you indisretion with the semi-colons in your description of this event, I’d say you took the words right out of my mouth. How did you do that?!

It almost sounds like you duplicated, understood and have judgment. That sounds suspiciously like you weren’t thwarted by those evil stenographers. Whooaaaaaa!!!!

  19. Thanks for speaking out, Tom. More power to you!

  20. Hey Tom, Welcome and thanks for sharing your story. You’ve summed up the situation quite well.

  21. The GAK release DVD was definitely tough to sit through. Three hours to pump up correcting some stenographer mistakes?

By the end I realized that the overall message was basically black PR of LRH. There was so much wrong with HIS books yet he could never be bothered to look at his books after they had been printed? Not once over the next 30 plus years? What other conclusion could anyone in the audience possibly draw! LRH, who cared deeply about people, yet he tossed off a book and then never looked at it again?

And, of course, the audience itself was subtly made wrong as well because they never could have really understood what was in the books. Insultingly unbelievable.

I hope DM wears goggles and electrician’s gloves 24/7 because when this theta line blows up the sparks are going to fly and he’s going to look like Wily Coyote after the dynamite goes Boom!

Jeff Hawkins and I did the marketing for the Basics. Worked out and wrote the big chart, etc. There is no question that the glossaries are greatly improved, the overall designs are nice and the sad truth is that there actually were some errors corrected in the manuscripts. Most of these books were dictated, not typed out. In a few places stuff did get placed wrongly. Big deal. It certainly did not warrant a 3 hour event to explain it.

Finally, the lecture series that accompany the books are absolutely fabulous. Really fabulous, and studying everything in sequence does let one follow the path of research and development.

I’m saying this so that the richly deserved black PR of DM with his micro meddling and compulsive bypassing should not be allowed to overshadow or diminish the truly mind-blowing Source data available in these early materials. I’ve seen people complaining that these books are no longer LRH. That simply isn’t true. Read Handbook for Preclears and listen to The Life Continuum lectures and see if there isn’t incredible stuff in there. That’s LRH. Not DM.

  22. Welcome, Tom. Great to know you.

  23. Thanks for speaking out Tom – an excellent post.

  24. Tom,

Thank you for being here, it helps our cause so much and strengthens our group.

    🙂

  25. ” You can no longer buy an LRH book at a Scn Bookstore.”

That’s not true at all. I can still buy LRH books at a Scn Bookstore. Please get your facts straight.

  26. I had the same feeling, I happen to know the tech good enough and the release of the new books wasn’t going to tell me anything knew. DM for sure couldn’t duplicate them, but again he has to generalize….. no wonder!

  27. Barry, Possibly Tom is referring to revisions. In 92? there was an SP typist too, per DM, per Leaving scientology website. That’s two SP typists found I guess?… I don’t know what to make of it. I can’t confirm or deny if stuff has been compromised wholesale, but a few lectures and refs and defs have changed as documented on this site and others.

  28. What I meant by that comment is that the copyright registrations for LRH books have changed over the years, and the current copyrights are held by “The Church of Scientology of California” or “The Church of Scientolgy Internationa”, not LRH. In the earlier re-issues (83?) they put the name of L. Ron Hubbard in the title of the book, but registered it with Church of Scientology International as the author.

You can see one example here: http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?Search_Arg=The+problems+of+work&Search_Code=TALL&PID=2eqZwTvvGI10iUQ7TBDnymuZq&SEQ=20091124085033&CNT=25&HIST=1

Searching the Library of Congress catalog can be pretty revealing. http://cocatalog.loc.gov/

Jessie Prince detailed a meeting at ASI in 1983 in one of his affidavits: http://www.factnet.org/Scientology/jesse_prince_affidavit.html
    that stated in part:
“32. At the same meeting in early 1983 David Miscavige specifically ordered Patricia Brice (who at the time was L. Ron Hubbard’s personal secretary and an employee of ASI) to begin the process of mass copyright registration filings for all of L. Ron Hubbard’s materials. This order was given despite the fact that Mr. Miscavige was already aware that many of the materials in question were already in the public domain. Thus, I know from personal knowledge that in mid 1983 Scientology began a massive program to register Mr. Hubbard’s material with the United State’s Copyright office.”

This I believe opened the door to what followed.
I think it also gives a legal basis for “open-sourcing” the original LRH texts, which should make Geir happy.

  29. Thanks for all the wonderful comments and emails.

I was thinking today, on my way in to work, that I am “old school” in many ways. I see Green on White as what the Orgs should run on policy-wise, and of course Red on White for Tech and Qual.

When Miscavige created a new issue type (Scientology Policy Directives) was he trying to tell us something when he chose “Black on Blue”
    as the issue colors? 😉

  30. “On the day when we can fully trust each other, there will be peace on Earth.” LRH

  31. Thought provoking

You truly are a great comedian…only such a person could make me laugh at something “painfully” obvious.

Thank you for answering my questions regarding purchasing books. As it turned out, just following my question to you I began reading some of the timetrack data and read what you mentioned regarding Jesse Prince. So I am catching up but apparently…a lot of people have communicated…and there is a lot to still read.

I tried to quickly check the Library of Congress site and it was a little more unweilding than I was prepared for so I will have to dedicate some more time to that later. I did visit the actual building, three times!! It is sooo incredible and despite it”s grandeur, it was built under it’s estimated budget, (actual funds returned to the government). When the capital was burned down, all the books were lost. When they did build the Library of Congress, unemployed European artisans were hired to do the work, just following the World’s Fair (I believe it was Chicago’s). People from various countries collaborated, each bringing a piece of their own history into the project resulting in an amazingly aethetic building. The best part is that Abraham Lincoln donated his personal library to it so that knowledge would be available to our leaders. Too bad DM didn’t follow this example.

One of the things I like about history is that it shows us that adversity will probably always be there and that good things are worth preserving…and worth fighting for.

  32. Eldon, I have yet to read a post from you which doesn’t attempt to belittle or denigrate Scientology or Scientologists. I was wondering when someone else would notice. One more thing: did it not occur to you that Kendra Wiseman took her story off ExScnKids because she no longer wants it publicized? Yet you happily referred others to a cached version.

  33. Gak! The long link I pasted no longer works.

    Go to http://cocatalog.loc.gov/

Enter “Problems of Work” (no quotes) in the Basic Search box. The results will show the different date of registration. If you click on the title links, you can view who the registered authors are.

  34. Huck,
Has it occurred to you that the Internet is a place where one cannot effectively retract something once it’s been published? Ever heard of the Wayback machine?

Things were so much simpler in the telex days, but you can’t go back.

  35. I don’t want to get into a tit-for-tat, Eldon, but it speaks volumes that you did not answer my first observation.

On the second, perhaps she sees her story differently now. Whatever, she’s no longer posting and doesn’t have her story on the blog anymore.

  36. Well said Tom. 🙂

You and I are of a like mind in so many ways.
