Scientology and Living

Somehow, somewhere along the line, Corporate Scientology lost the following truths that make Scientology so workable.  I point it out in the hope that none of us ever lose sight of them.

From L Ron Hubbard Lecture titled Scientology and Living, 4 July 1954:

Now, there are two other categories of human beings.  And one is the category, upper scale, where things can be good or bad at will; everything on the Know to Sex in the upper scale can be good, you see? But when they’re on lower scale, everything on the Know to Sex scale – which is Mystery, there, to Sex Scale – is bad.  And when you get something where everything on the Mystery or the Know to Sex Scale is bad, you have somebody who is inverted, very badly inverted.

And when they’re consistently and continually “everything is bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad” — watch out. They’re well below 2.0.  They’re using some kind of a mechanism of it’s bad, it’s bad, that’s why we’ve got to make something, you see?  Or it’s bad, it’s bad, it’s bad, that’s we have got to make nothing.  This is your 1.5.  He is actually operating there 100 percent.  He can only operate on emergencies.

“We are about to have this tremendous disaster, and therefore in view of the fact that we’ve got this disaster, we have to have this emergency legislation,” and so forth.  “And therefore we can make something here.  We can make this army so as to make nothing” — big compulsive sort of reaction, you see?

But it’s bad.  All that reasoning is bad.  The only reason we can do anything is because something is bad.  They have lost concept of doing something because it’s fun, and there is your last keynote.

Individuals who can do things, no matter whether good, bad or indifferent or outrageous, simply because they’re fun — an individual who can freely and with a clear heart do things because they’re fun is a very sane person.  And he’ll be in good shape.  And the amount of laughter which a person laughs — which is, by the way, not your harmonics of laughter.  Laughter, you see, has a number of harmonics down the line. Rather upscale laughter: a person, he laughs, he doesn’t laugh because he’s embarrassed, he doesn’t laugh this way and that, he laughs because he thinks something is funny.  And if a person laughs fairly often, and is very easy in that laughter, you got a sane man in your hands.

And they just go downscale and laugh less and less and less or laugh more embarrassedly or compulsively or obsessively, more and more and more, as we get clear down to the bottom.

Person down at the bottom doesn’t laugh at all.  He doesn’t live, either.  He just lies there, a lump of energy, being mass, meaning and no mobility.  He’s not even a symbol anymore.

from LRH lecture The Role of Laughter in Processing – Dangerousness, 5 July 1954:

Now, here is a coordination here. And so there is a coordination with laughter and a thetan.  An individual can laugh as long as he feels he has some freedom to make nothing out of it.  What do you think your preclear is doing as he sits there and chews and chews and chews on a lock or a secondary of the sort?  And he doesn’t digest it even if he can swallow it.  He’s unable to make nothing out of it.  Well, isn’t there a simpler mechanism to make nothing out of things than to run this arduous seriousness?  Yes, indeed there is, indeed so: to cure him of not laughing.

Now, supposing we just used this as an overall process, and we just cured our preclear of this condition: no laughing.  We cured him of not-laughingness. We reassessed our cases that we confront on this basis: melancholia versus jovialovia.  Today, jovialovia is the most horrible disease known to man. “Do you realize that fellow laughs? Hah! Give him the place of the president of the University?  Oh, no!  No, no! We need somebody who can drag his chin across the thresholds. That’s obvious that.  That’s somebody we need!”

Miscavige Hunkers in Bunker with G.O.

Notes from the bunker

David Miscavige has made much of his role in disbanding Corporate Scientology’s infamous harassment arm called the Guardian’s Office (GO).  In a court declaration of 17 February 2004 Miscavige swore: “When further investigation proved the documents to be authentic, it was made clear that we had no choice but to overthrow the GO and dismiss everyone who had violated Church policy or the law. These activities ultimately led to a complete disband of the GO.”

The Guardian’s Office purge was essential to Miscavige’s power push in the early eighties.  Without it he could not have cut Scientology Founder L Ron Hubbard’s last existing communication line to the last person with sufficient altitude and respect to actually share ideas and perspectives with him, his wife and Scientology Controller (overseer of Guardian’s Office) Mary Sue Hubbard.  In Miscavige’s own words: “It must be noted that Mary Sue Hubbard believed her position as Controller and as the “Founder’s wife” to be unassailable and beyond reproach by anyone but Mr. Hubbard — who was not around at the time, a fact that she was well aware of.”  Hence,  Miscavige assailed both positions, all justified by the alleged crimes of the GO.  Crimes that Miscavige characterized as: “There were also instances in which GO staff used unscrupulous means to deal with people they perceived as enemies of the Church — means that were completely against Scientology tenets and policy, not to mention the law.”

Irony of ironies, now that Miscavige has managed to blow off his latest troika of close advisers, see Miscavige Death Throes, he is surounded in his bunker with nothing but former Guardian’s Office staff who met Miscavige’s sworn standards of “we had no choice but to…dismiss everyone who had violated church policy or the law.”

Miscavige’s last three remaining closest advisers in the bunker are former Guardian’s Office criminals.

During a March 1987 take-over of RTC  in which Miscavige anointed himself as supreme ruler of Corporate Scientology under the invented title Chairman of the Board RTC (COB RTC), approximately half of existing RTC staff were purged for allegedly being “loyal”  to its former head, Deputy Inspector General RTC Vicki Aznaran.   One of Miscavige’s justifications for removing Aznaran and purging the organization was its retention of one Brian Andrus, an unindicted co-conspirator in the federal criminal case United States vs. Mary Sue Hubbard, et al.   And yet, curiously Miscavige inexplicably retained another former Guardian’s Office hit man and quietly imported another.  The two constitute three of his closest most trusted advisors in his ever shrinking bunker roster.

Laurisse Stuckenbrock, Communicator of Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center (COB Comm RTC).   Laurisse was not even in RTC during the 87 purge and yet Miscavige and his wife Shelly bypassed channels to slip Laurisse into an important executive slot despite reports to them that Laurisse was engaged in unethical (if not illegal)  Guardian’s Office Intelligence Branch activity in Australia and New Zealand .

Warren McShane, D/Inspector General External (or Legal Affairs).  The former Assistant Guardian New York during the late seventies/early eighties when that office was engaged in creepy, criminal operations against perceived enemies.   Over the years Miscavige has referred to Warren repeatedly as a “GO criminal” to Mike Rinder and myself.  On several occasions Miscavige told me that McShane only continued to be retained, despite continuous unethical/illegal actions, because “Warren is a good liar.  He is such an habitual liar he lies with ease.  He is the only guy I trust in deposition as RTC’s corporate rep because of that one ability of his.”

Linda Hamel, Commanding Officer Office of Special Affairs International (CO OSA INT).   Linda was deeply involved in unethical and illegal activity in the Guardian’s Office for years.  She was retained and placed over OSA Int intelligence in the early eighties for two reasons: a) she had the savvy and lines to keep a number of ongoing Guardian’s Office intelligence ops alive during the transition from Guardians Office (the “disband”) to the Office of Special Affairs (the GO’s successor), b) a thorough review of Guardian’s Office documents from the 1977 raids (later made public in court) did not specifically implicate her by name so that Miscavige’s “purge” would not be later discredited.  Linda remained over Intelligence for the next twenty years.  Shortly after I left RTC in 2004 Linda was elevated by Miscavige to the Commanding Officer post.

With Miscavige’s universe progressively shrinking with more public disclosure of his own habitual, continuous felonious behavior and his continuing paranoid purges  – the GO Criminal Troika has become Miscaviges last hope of clinging on to his dying dictatorship.

My guess is that one or more of the GO troika will deliver the final blow from which Miscavige cannot recover. And that blow will consist of a heavy, irrefutable dose of the truth to which Miscavige has proven so allergic.  I know all three of them personally. While they have demonstrated a pathetic weakness of character in continuing to facilitate a sociopath in his war against people they know to be acting in the best interest of Scientology, all three at bottom are basically good.   They know in their heart of hearts they can’t take me down.  They also know deep inside that irrespective of the magnitude of the contra survival acts  they have attempted to commit against me over the past two years, at the end of the day I am going to see that they come through all this ok.

Miscavige Cancels Hubbard’s Dictionary

L Ron Hubbard’s many spoken and recorded words that specified the vital necessity for a comprehensive Dictionary of Dianetics and Scientology have been burned and buried by David Miscavige.

L Ron Hubbard directed the compilation of the original red covered Dianetics and Scientology Dictionary.  He did not edit it nor did he approve the final edit.  Through use of it over the years he often wrote about the need for improvement.  Most particularly when Hubbard was developing the Key to Life course in the late seventies he wrote many despatches directing the compilation of a complete Dianetics and Scientology dictionary.

David Miscavige cross ordered all of that – just as he did the completion of LRH’s six month project to complete the Technical Training Films – until the mid nineties.  By that time Miscavige  had destroyed most tech veterans in the church and began a dictatorship on technical matters which continues to this day. He did that in the mid nineties around the time he announced the completion of the Tech films, after spending hundreds of millions of dollars making them cinematographically to his liking, and technically abhorrent.

Miscavige made a big deal at Int about Hubbard’s many non-complied with orders for the comprehensive Technical dictionary.  LRH Tech Compilations staff were commandeered off post to work exclusively on the dictionary project for the next ten years.  As has been Miscavige’s wont, every step forward resulted in two steps backward.  After a group of tech veterans would submit years of work, Miscavige would sit on it for up to a year.  When he’d finally get around to it, he would find some imagined outpoint, throw a tantrum, bust yet more technical veterans and brand all their work as “suppressive” and not to be used.  This cycle went on for literally a decade.

To add gasoline to the fire, Miscavige ordered that Bridge Publications stop producing and selling the existing Tech Dictionary in the late nineties because its  replacement was continually on his event release schedule, and continually rescheduled because of his decade of cross ordering his own orders to implement Hubbard’s orders on the dictionary.

While the original red covered Tech dictionary was flawed, it was a hell of a lot better than nothing.  And now those original dictionaries are so scarce they have become more valuable than precious stones due to Miscavige’s order to bury them.

Instead of following Hubbard’s advices concerning the improvement of a compiled book (the dictionary), after blowing off all veteran technical compilers, Miscavige embarked upon revising and re-compiling all of Hubbards written books which Hubbard never advised be tampered with.

Well, here we are another half decade since the decade of Miscavige sabotage described above ended, and there are still no tech dictionaries in sight.  Why?

A recently released (yeah, we get releases too – they are original documents detailing Miscavige’s crimes) transcript excerpt of David Miscavige’s 2005 private, confidential talk to OT Ambassadors at his annual Freewinds Maiden Voyage events tells us exactly WHY.  David Miscavige outright told the Ambassadors to their faces that he cancelled LRH’s strategy and plan, because the dictionary was just getting “too big.”  Of course he left out the part about it being a long term, oft repeated plan of L Ron Hubbard’s.   And like the Black Dianeticists that Hubbard warned could deny Scientology to the planet in the Philadelphia Doctorate Course lectures (oh yeah, see previous post where I demonstrated that Miscavige had that portion conveniently excised from those lectures) Miscavige with a few authoritative, blustering words excised Scientology history and LRH’s intentions for its future.

Here are the words of Miscavige spoken to the OT Ambassadors aboard the Freewinds in June 2005:

You might be wondering about the Dictionary.  Well what we decided to do finally is now that we’re going through every one of these lectures — and they’ll be done, they’ll be actually all on the shelf within months — every single definition you’ve ever found in a dictionary is in those lectures. So we put those glossaries together and it ended up being the way to finally do it and know that we’re right, because it’s a constantly building data base in chronological sequence.  So what we now have is that when we come out with the materialsevery correct definition for that lecture or book — you’ll see in the books, they’re all in there and we keep that going and now it’s just a matter of  [snaps fingers] tying it all together. Because dictionary started getting about this big. [shows audience with hands about 1 foot high].

Okay, so we have now two different categories: the hard-to-find words and phrases; but the technical terms are, given as theynot change, but “evolve”. Like how does …. What’s an engram in Book One, to what’s an engram in Thought, Emotion and Effort? And he talks about it being a heavy facsimile — you see he gives the new data on it.  So they all build up that way.

The other part are all of the materials for people to be moving onto The Bridge.  We have our basic books and so forth — our beginning books that I don’t have here.  And for those who weren’t here last year, you might wonder where the beginning books fit in? Well, he did Dianetics all the way right through Creation of Human AbilityDianetics 55! , which is really bringing Dianetics and Scientology recombined, that’s what Dianetics 55! is. Then he did Fundamentals of Thought which he distilled everything down to it’s basics. And then wrote POW and the basic books. Beginning books pick up there. It went the whole track and then undercut. And you have your Problems of Work, and things of that nature.

All right. But with all of these different items I’m talking about, when a guy finally walks on The Bridge the real key here is going to be A) A/V for new people, B) co-audits.

This transcript is very instructive on Miscavige’s implant technology. Notice how he just slips in the dictionary cancellation pronunciamento and quickly changes the subject once he has implanted that little gem into his captive, tractable audience?

Pay close heed to the last line:

All right. But with all of these different items I’m talking about, when a guy finally walks on The Bridge the real key here is going to be A) A/V for new people, B) co-audits.

He goes from cancelling the dictionary, off onto a ramble about basic books, and lays in the conclusion that the Bridge is going to consist of A/V and co-audits for new people.

A/V and co-audits?

What about Books?  What about books being the first line of dissemination, establishing a direct comm line between the reader and Hubbard?  What about the Academy line that Hubbard perfected over three decades as THE route?   All cancelled in a single sentence by the man who has spent the past thirty years destroying the memory of the Founder of Scientology L Ron Hubbard.

As to the glossaries substituting for a dictionary, under Miscavige’s “logic” an Academy student would have to pour through literally hundreds of books and lecture transcripts to clear a single word.  The die has been cast, the door is wide open in Miscavige’s cult for him to indoctrinate from the word “go” with his own films full of his confused and reversed ideas.

It all apparently goes unnoticed in Miscavige’s organizations. For the simple reason that Miscavige’s organizations do not train auditors, do not audit preclears, and do not disseminate Scientology.

His thinking apparently goes something like this, the longer the runway the more time to squeeze every last dime out of the rube before he learns enough Scientology to realize what they are doing to the poor sap.

Folks, my earnest advice is to gather and hold onto as much “old”, unaltered material as you possibly can.

18 Wheels of Affinity, Reality, and Communication

With all the chatter about L Ron Hubbard’s alleged shortcomings, it got me to thinking about what the effect of the unprecedented ad hominen attacks against the man were.  Hubbard was demonized by the Cold War establishment perhaps more than any other civilian figure.  One cummulative effect of it all was to to one degree or another de-humanize him in the public eye.  We see remnants of those effects to this day. Tony Ortega has even come to the conclusion that my mission – and that of many other Independents – is made hopeless by this historical landscape.  That landscape is not easy to contextualize given its long-lived nature and Miscavige’s daily efforts to make the myths into reality.  Providing context to the entire picture  is a longer term project that I never lose site of, but unfortunately I have not found the time to devote to it that it deserves.

So, in the interim I play the game of trying to provide morsels of food for thought from time to time that might ever so slightly shift a viewpoint or two.

Today, I address a propaganda line that developed some legs during the take-down-Hubbard Cold War.  That is, “Hubbard’s writings rarely mention the word ‘love.'”

For those who have studied and applied much Scientology, certainly for me personally, that one cut to the quick.  It was not readily put to rest by counting up the use of the word “love” in Hubbard’s works.  Because, fact of the matter is, you won’t find the word “love” aplenty in Hubbard’s books and lectures.  Does that fact mean the subject of Scientology has nothing to do with the concept of “love”?

Again to those who understand the subject through study and work with it,  the answer is “of course it does, in fact it is the heart and soul of the subject.”

The purpose of the subject is to free the spirit through achievement of ever-increasing Understanding.  Understanding is composed of Affinity, Reality and Communication (ARC).  ARC are the component parts of Theta (the spirit, the soul; a term coined by Hubbard so as not to confuse it with 3000 years of misconceptions accumulated in the subject of spirituality).   Theta is the highest concept of love.   Theta is life force, elan vital, the all-healing good that the opposite of love (hate, lies, evil) disappears in the presence of.

Nearly every book written (there were dozens) and every lecture spoken (there were thousands) by Hubbard were done in furtherance of forwarding the laws of Affinity, Reality and Communication (increasing them) so as to free Theta.

I once tried to explain to Lawrence Wright (Pulitzer prize winning author of the February New Yorker article) that for every fault he could dig up about Hubbard, I could trace it back to a virtue.  Yes, Hubbard could be a harsh task master. Yes, he could roll up his sleaves and fight fire with a firestorm.  Yes, his propensity to do so left indelible faults in the organizations he created ( e.g. the Guardian’s Office, and yes even Office of Special Affairs,  etc).  But, having studied the subject thoroughly and practiced it inside and outside the organization, studied the man thoroughly (warts and all), and even myself having  acted viciously over many years in the name of defending Scientology, I came to an understanding while being outside of the beast for three years. That is, notwithstanding the fact that a died in the wool sociopath subsequently used Hubbard’s propensity to fight back hard as a justification for systematically ruining lives, the Old Man cared (many say to a fault) about assuring people’s ability to benefit from his discoveries. His discoveries about the laws of Affinity, Reality and Communication, the component parts of Theta (the highest possible concept of love). That Hubbard’s solutions to antagonism during the height of the Cold War are reprehensibly dramatized by a madman and an anachronistic organization in the age of Communication does not cancel that truth.

I’ll leave you with that thought and a song that I posted several weeks ago.   I know it is lengthy and only a few people (Laura, Rachel and Christie, I think) acknowledged having made it all the way through it.  But, this song captures for me the spirit of Scientology.   When all hope is lost for Chester, something happens.  The lyrics don’t explicitly say what it is.  But the music and context of the lyrics communicates what happens.  Chester is saved by love (theta), and somehow Chester realizes his (theta’s) seniority over the mechanics of matter, energy, space and time…and I’ll be damned.

When push comes to shove, when bullshit’s had its say, when the critics and zealots are done beating the hell out of one another, whether you wind up believing Hubbard was a sinner, a saint, a vengeful dirty fighter, or whatever,  I’ll continue to think he would have been right in there pitching with Chester, doing his damnedest to coax him  on up to cause over the elements that were trying to take him out of the game.

1984: The Severe Reality Adjustment

(ref: earlier post: Reverse (Black) Dianetics – Scientology’s 1984)

Miscavige takes a great deal of pride in having created what has become an accepted term of Scientology nomenclature behind the Wall.  It is called the SRA, or Severe Reality Adjustment. An SRA entails getting into a person’s face, screaming a reality at the top of one’s lungs with such force that the recipient goes into overwhelm and accepts the enforced reality. Should the recipient show the slightest disagreement or even puzzlement over the reality being imparted, it is expected that the SRAer use physical force to finish the job. Quite similar to the many lectures wherein LRH describes implant technology.

Miscavige recently promised to “annihilate” the credibility of folks imparting truths about Miscavige’s history that are apparently unpalatable to Miscavige.

The above facts are quite interesting in the light of the following passage from George Orwell’s 1984:

“If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say of this or that event, it never happened — that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death.

“The Party said that Oceania had never been in alliance with Eurasia. He, Winston Smith, knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as short a time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist?  Only in his own consciousness, which in any case must soon be annihilated. And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed — if all records told the same tale — then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past,’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’ And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. ‘Reality control,’ they called it; in Newspeak, ‘doublethink.’

“‘Stand easy!’ barked the instructress, a little more genially.Winston sank his arms to his sides and slowly refilled his lungs with air. His mind slid away into the labyrinthine world of doublethink.  To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which canceled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself — that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.”

Wake up!

Response to Miscavige Propaganda Campaign

If you are hauled into ethics for reading recent veteran accounts of the operating basis of  Miscavige bring this with you:

” We own a tremendous amount of property. We own a tremendous amount of material, and so forth. And it keeps growing. But that’s not important. When buildings get important to us, for God’s sake, some of you born revolutionists, will you please blow up central headquarters. If someone had put some HE (high explosives) under the Vatican long ago, Catholicism might still be going. Don’t get interested in real estate. Don’t get interested in the masses of buildings, because that’s not important.

“What is important is how much service you can give the world and how much you can get done and how much better you can make things. These are important things. These are all that are important. A bank account never measured the worth of a man. His ability to help measured his worth and that’s all. A bank account can assist one to help but where it ceases to do that it becomes useless.”

L. Ron Hubbard, 31 December 1960 lecture, The Genus of Dianetics and Scientology.

Der Fuhrer’s Big Lies

Miscavige’s recent events and publications make evident that he has regressed to using the same big lies on the public that he used in the early eighties to bamboozle Hubbard in order to get himself into power in the first place.  The lies are woven into all of Miscavige’s recent utterances about the great “expansion” experienced with himself at the helm. He spends millions to spread the word about the increase in posh square feet added to Scientology premises. He butresses it with impressive claims of increasing numbers of books gotten into the hands of readers.

Square feet. For the moment, let’s put aside the fact Hubbard so abhored the idea of Scientology becoming all about real estate and MEST  to the point he advised rebellious Scientologists in the early days to bomb any ostentatious quarters some future manager might construct.  Recent observations inside a number of Miscavige’s Ideal orgs on four continents have found a derth of humanity. That’s right, very few people. Not much auditing and not much training.  Not much life around all that pretty MEST.

Books. Miscavige has claimed that in the past five years there has been greater Scientology expansion than in the previous five decades combined.  He relies solely on alleged book sales figures to support that invented figure he pulled out of the air. In fact, over the last five years the Church has engaged in the same massive fraud that thrust Miscavige into power in the first place. Orgs have been forced to purchase more books than they could ever sell. Public have been forced to buy more books than they know what to do with. I have been told by some on line public that they have numerous sets of books in their homes and storage spaces. These are book sets they have been pressured into buying in order to get a pass from Ethics. Many more public have reported being coerced into large donations to have sets of books shipped to unknown libraries.

Many have asked how Hubbard tolerated Miscavige’s initial early eighties reign of terror against veteran Mission holders. Miscavige false reported to Hubbard that book sales were so astronomical upon beheading the Mission holders that the suppress was then off Scientology. What he did not report is where all those sold books went.  Miscavige promoted notoriously dishonest and effective regges to Author Services in the early eighties. He gave them full power to order the Publications organizations in LA and Denmark to do as they said. He then ordered an obedient CO CMO INT (Marc Yager) and ED INT (Guillaume Lesevre) to order all orgs to buy insane amounts of books from the Publications organizations.  Millions of books were stored in attics, basements and outside storage spaces by every org and mission.

During a brief respite from legal and PR assignments in the early nineties, I went on an inspection tour with Miscavige to about a dozen class V orgs. Each and every one of them had huge spaces devoted to book storage, books that were received during Miscavige’s stat push that he false reported to Hubbard years earlier. In many orgs the books were unsellable having been subject to water damage and mold. Those who know the mechanics of the missed withhold phenomena can understand how this might have been another one of  those significant steps he took on the downward spriral toward his current violent insanity.

The financial stress caused on orgs by being coerced into buying books they could not sell for decades sent the majority of orgs into an insolvency that they never recovered from. Miscavige actively prevented the implementation of finance systems that would allow orgs to get back on their feet and pricing systems that would make services affordable to anyone who might express interest. The net result has been consistently dwindling numbers of new Scientologists and major delivery statistics.

Compare International Scientology promotional material from the eighties to Int promo now. Now lots of books and lots of new real estate are touted. Services? Forget about it. It’s like they said about Mussolini and Hitler: forget what they do to people, look at the shiny trains and aramements they so efficiently crank out; they must be good leaders.
