Kathy Braceland – Los Angeles Independent

Kathy Braceland is an OT with a lot of Scientology training. She is a great artist. You should check out her work at http://www.k-jostudio.com/, but only after you’ve read her declaration of independence below. Kathy is one of the most compassionate beings I have had the privilege of coming to know during this great adventure. She is a valuable friend to me and to all of us.

Lucky me, I worked with a guy who was on HQS way back in 1973.  I was already fascinated with people but I found him most interesting because he carried himself differently than anyone I knew.  As we became friends, I told him things I had stopped telling others because they thought I was “a little off” for thinking such things.  I told him I was interested in telepathy.  Instead of laughing, he agreed with me but said he didn’t know how to do that yet.  I told him I thought that we didn’t just live one life, the body died but we continued to live.  Surprisingly, he didn’t laugh or run away.   I said I wanted to help people and I wanted to know how the mind worked.  He said I should become an auditor, then brought me into the Mission in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada).  I was 17.

Lucky me again, the staff consisted of 2 Cl VIII’s, 2 Cl VI’s, 1 Cl IV and all of them were at least OT III.  I happily paid my $25 for the Comm Course and started my adventure to become an auditor.  I did every course the mission offered, ending with HSDC.  My wish came true.  I learned how the mind worked and I could help people.  I was on cloud 9…this is what I wanted to be…an auditor.  I audited and audited, hundreds of hours of Dianetics.  It was wonderful.  The wins and gains were absolutley mind blowing… literally…ha ha….

At the end of 1974, I flew to FCDC.  I was going to be a Cl IV auditor!  Having absolutely no reality on a Cl IV org, nor the USA and Americans, I didn’t know what I was in store for other than I was going to be amongst the big boys that LRH talked about in Keeping Scientology Working.  I was up for it.  I brought my own pc with me just in case they didn’t have one.  I figured he could train up to Cl IV to keep himself busy while he waited for me to audit him.

The training was awesome…rough, tough and standard.  I did my HSDC internship and was a certified, gold sealed Dianetics auditor…wow!  I started my Academy Levels.  TRs and metering every morning, then study and drill.  The course rooms and HGC were full — FCDC was buzzing.  It was exhilarating!  I threw myself into study 7 days a week, 9am until midnight or more.  I would audit any pc I was asked to, on any action. I audited the staff too.  I became the flub catch auditor and the course sup’s little helper.  I did my Cl IV internship and was now a gold sealed, certified Cl IV auditor.  A dream come true!

I returned to Edmonton to audit in the HGC.  I did lots of Life Repairs, Dianetics, repair lists, grades…everything I could audit.  My pcs were flying and I was having the time of my life.  In 1976, I was asked if I would train to be the Cram Off and Qual Sec for the Mission.  I figured, I could help even more pcs at once by assisting other auditors and I could also help the Mission.  Cool….  So I went to FCDC and trained as a Qual Sec.  Ooohh…FEBC tapes, ESTO tapes…awesome!  I returned to Edmonton, set up my Qual and went to work.  I also continued to audit in the HGC.

In 1977, I went to FCDC and did my Senior Cl IV auditor training.  I kept a rigorous training schedule and would be the first to arrive and last to leave the course room each day.  I couldn’t get enough of the tech…oh man, it was incredible!  Life is just getting better and better.

In 1978, the Edmonton mission became a Cl IV org.  So I graduated into being an org staff member.  Cool….  Life was good.  Our newly formed org rocked!  The course rooms were full, the HGC was alive and full, there were lots of staff and more coming on board…it was fun…it was the best!

I continued on until 1981 and then moved to Los Angeles, where I trained on the HRD and CCRD.  I also attested to Clear.  I concentrated on my OT levels over the next few years and finished OT IV in 1985.  It was all completely fabulous and such a rocket ride!

Then things changed….

January 1986 came to be.  I was at the Palladium event where this guy I’d never heard of stood up and announced that LRH was dead and basically, he was taking over.  Enter David Miscavige.  My heart sank.  None of this was good news.  Through the rest of the event, my mind raced on how I was going to get up the rest of the OT levels quickly.  Over the next few months, I somehow paid for and did OT V and got onto Solo NOTS, finished that and then completed OT VIII in August 1988.  I did it…wow…I made it!  Thank you LRH!!

With the advent of Miscavige, I saw lawsuits spring up.  Prices for services 10Xed what they were, making the Bridge virtually unattainable for the general populace of earth.  Blanket C/Sing (i.e. insanity) was very quickly introduced where everyone going onto their OT levels were sec checked, whether they needed it or not… including in the non-interference zone.  We were all guilty until proven innocent.  This was all under the guise of protecting upper level materials from getting into the wrong hands.  Miscavige had to be certain that no one else would raise a lawsuit against the church and reveal data to the masses.  After all, a few slipped through the cracks.  Who knows who might be next?  It was absurd!

Public Scientologists were asked to drop their lives and help their church.  Nothing wrong with a call to arms, if the intent is clean.  But it wasn’t.  The public were encouraged to taunt, sneer at and hate anyone opposing the church.

Miscavige’s blanket, worldwide C/Sing continued into the 1990’s.  In 1991, Miscavige announced that no one had really finished NOTS, so everybody had to redo it.  At the same time, he said that it was voluntary.  However, if you wanted to get the gains that you’re obviously missing, you’d better get on it.

Miscavige introduced the Golden Age of Tech in the 90’s as well.  The training that we all did prior to this was awesome!  It didn’t need to be fixed.  But Miscavige, being the antithesis of LRH, thought differently than LRH.  Miscavige made a blanket statment to all auditors that we didn’t really understand what we’d been studying for all these years and weren’t we just stupid for thinking we did?  Apparently, none of us were auditing correctly over these decades.  Thusly, the blanket invalidation of all the pc’s that we audited — our pc’s truly didn’t get any wins from the tech that we misapplied.  So now all auditors had to retrain and do it the correct way.  I won’t go into the endless stream of out tech that exists in the orgs…I’ll only mention the out tech of 3 swings on the needle for the f/n and that will get everyone started….

The route to Clear became arduous.  You damn near had to give up your first born. Another blanket C/S was put in place by Miscavige to invalidate the state of Clear and those that had attained it.  Even OT’s were rechecked on their Clear status.  It got worse….  Miscavige introduced yet another blanket C/S on Solo NOTS comps.  Apparently no one did Solo NOTS correctly and no one really finished it.  Miscavige even issued his own laughable “confidential issue” that directly contradicted 2 upper level LRH HCOB’s.  Miscavige’s intent was to confuse, introvert and invalidate.  So now anyone who comped OT VII and anyone currently on OT VII, were supposed to do it all over again.

The same thing happened with OT VIII.   Miscavige claimed that no one did OT VIII correctly either, so it had to be redone.  More lies being spilled from Miscavige’s face.  His intent was to confuse, introvert and invalidate.

All of Miscavige’s cruel and evil inval took it’s toll on the public and staff too.  Increasingly, I saw SO members, staff and public looking like the wind had been knocked out of their sails.  It got to the point where my friends in the SO couldn’t even talk to me..or have lunch with me.  It broke my heart to see it like this….  Unfortunately, the guys in the church bought the snake oil.  They became what I call Stepford Scientologists.  It may be mean but it’s also true.

A little about church events:  Events are thrown at a huge expense, standing ovations for every person that walks out on stage every 3 minutes, more money has to be donated for all the various networks to keep the bridge to total freedom alive, loads of talk about the expansive promo that’s going to be released (and never is) and LRH is mentioned just often enough at key points to keep the audience interested.  At some point in the late 80’s, the events became mandatory.  That makes me laugh….

Miscavige’s message is always the same — there’s a hidden data line that only he knows about.

Miscavige has created a never ending mystery sandwich and holds a constant carrot in front of Scientologists.

Miscavige has invalidated every auditor, pc, Clear, pre OT and OT on this planet and introduced a hidden data line that only he is privy to.  So here’s a public person (or staff) that has been pounded into the ground and made to feel worthless and now Miscavige says he has found some lost tech that’s going to save them from hell.  He’s one sick individual….

Of course the truth of the matter is, there is no hidden data line.  Period.

Being the little chatterbox that I am, I could go on and on.  I hope no one minds that I didn’t get into my own personal war stories or show my battle scars.  They’re not significant to my story.  Besides, it’s more fun live and in person to talk about that stuff because you’d get all kinds of wild gestures and facial expressions.  But seriously (or as serious as I can get) I really only wanted to give a “before and after” picture from my perspective.

I guess I should close this up by saying that I’ve been an Independent Scientologist for a very long time and maybe it will help some by knowing this.  I think it will because I have to say, Marty — a man I have always had the deepest respect for — helped me immensely by publicly stating he was out of the church and the reasons for it.  When I saw that first interview with him…I thought “are you kidding me?  Marty Rathbun?  Awesome!”  I hope my little story will have a similar effect.

I am absolutely delighted to be amongst all of you wonderful self and pan determined beings.  Thanks for letting me roam freely amongst you….

    Incredible Kathy!!

I actually was just thinking about you this afternoon. I don’t think I know you but the name sounds so familiar. The big thetans usually jump out at you!

Anyways, I was thinking ” I wonder who she is??” And BAM..now I know. Thanks for being there and giving so many right indications. I can feel all the charge blowing off the group!!

WOW!! What a rush! I had a cog too. All of our past gsins that have been invalidated, can be rehabbed so easy with the correct SP indicated and just knowing it was all lies!

Who would have thought that the suppression would come from our own “leader”? Talk about hard to confront….Jeez.

What a beautiful soul & artist you are. Thank you for speaking out!
CoS no longer has any stability with all of these great LRH’s standard, on-policy and on-tech auditors, C/Ss and OTs leaving the church on a daily basis.

The sooner we bring DM down, the fastest we can save Scientology and LRH’s reputation in the world.

What a great year 2010 is going to be for Scientology and all the Independents! 🙂

Another OT VIII-they will keep coming-The Truth Revealed. Kathy that was wonderful-well stated. 1995 was the critical year for the tech being destroyed by this madman. I saw my own auditor at AOLA James Fuller who was an LRH trained fabulous auditor literally fall to pieces in 1995 from the Invalidation of his auditing being given because of Miscavige golden age on Tech. I had to hold his hand figuratively to get me through the rest o OTV-he was such a fabulous auditor and I made great case gain with him. Of course after that he was so invalidated he has only been FESing folders I understand for years. Exilda and I truly applaud you.

I love James Fuller! He audited me on OT IV. He’s absolutely incredible!

Are you and Exilda auditing? A nice man in Palmdale is looking for an auditor for himself and his mom. He also wants to train to become an auditor.

Great story Kathy. Back then it seems like the focus was on getting trained and audited and training and auditing others, and the admin side focused on this too. I’ve never known this version of Scientology, but it seems like a slimmed down model like this might work.

Today’s new vision is to handle the external threats through second mortgages and credit cards, and handle your own ethics to a point of “deep” introspection and second guessing when you’re not even bad to begin with. And put off your own Bridge for the time being to put your 30 staff empty courseroom into a mansion so we can be more “acceptable” or something. The idea is the public will get the message through big buildings. They don’t need a mystical “message” they need auditing.

Also get the “new” release six times a year and donate way to happiness to Asia, whatever your “thing” is, do that first before simply getting yourself and others up the bridge with the quarter million stashed away separate from your amends project setaside account.

It’s supposed to be about your city, your org, you, but money’s been going to Germany and Africa to “help”. Actually it goes to bank accounts and sits by and large. The best defense isn’t a good offense but a full courseroom.

It’s now about putting off training and auditing through basics and donos and capricious political ethics handlings, specific violations covered here and on friendsoflrh.org and elsewhere.

How much strange “safe pointing” and “improvement” and “getting the tech out to the world” do we have to endure before we can just train and audit and do the admin actions in the OEC?

    Kathy Braceland // January 6, 2010 at 1:08 am | Reply

Well said. Yep, auditing and training…that’s what it’s all about. You sure had me laughing on the outpoints…I particularly liked the “1/4 of a million stashed away separate from your amends project setaside account.” ha ha….

He’s the photographer who took many of Ron’s pictures, also a Class VII who trained under the Ol’man at Saint Hill and started a booming Franchise out in the middle of Canada.

I know all this stuff because I had a long conversation with him once. Truly a Founding Scientologist.)

“I hope no one minds that I didn’t get into my own personal war stories …”
I do mind! I would love to read them 🙂 What you experienced has been experienced by others who may think they were an exception or it was their fault. I am amazed at how many “It happened to me too!” exclamations I hear by reading personal war stories, realizing that what we have experienced is widespread out-tech and suppression coming right from the top, and not due to our own case problems.

    Kathy Braceland // January 6, 2010 at 1:36 am | Reply

ha ha…that was cute. Okay, one war story. I volunteered at Narconon Int for almost 2 years. ..1988 and 1989. Long story short, the ED of NN was quicksilvered to Chilocco and I was left holding the bag. I had highest stats ever in gross income and drug ed lectures delivered. End of the story is, “the powers that be” wanted all my files, my successful actions and me out of there…and I would be declared if I didn’t do what I was told. How’s that?

your narrative leaves me breathless!! I can feel your excitement for years before DM and you make me understand (me, who does not have that comparison for coming in much later) what it was like without that guy.

I discovered Marty’s blog in the night from 28 to 29 Nov 09 and spent hours and nights since then to devour all the information here and with Marty’s friends I discovered via that site – becoming even a bit sick because of not knowing what to do about it now that I am in the know.

    I still don’t know –

But what I know: your post is information so packed and compact that it is very apt to be translated in another language for people to enlighten who don’t speak English (at all). And that I will do as a starter.

English is not my mother tongue ( as you might recognize ). But I may say that I have a pretty good command of my own language so that I am confident to convey all the nuance necessary to make that emotional impact your report has on me.

Kathy, thank you for your courage, for your service over all these years, for your engagement and for your love.

    What a beautiful, radiating being!

I was tracking with you all the way through your earlier years. While reading it, it rekindled the bubbly, jubilant feeling I recalled having.

As I got into 1985 the bubble burst and I found myself getting more and more solid and more serious. I’d heard it all before in bits and pieces but to be given the picture in black and white without fancy adornments. It was quite bleak. Again, disheartened about how we let it get so bad. Having recently left the mindset of the Stepford Scientologists, I shudder and remind myself that there is no use regretting…

After that disappointment, I have to look up at your picture again…to see your smile, the glow in your eyes and the sheer radiance in your being. I am reminded that Scientology is not something we have lost or is unalterably damaged but we do have a lot of work to do, kinda like cleaning a very dirty room. But the tools we have are out of this world.

It is strange to welcome an already independent being to the Independents so I will say instead, thank you for letting me be part of your group.

Thanks Kathy, you know – I had a cog on this too: Seems to me that if everyone who did OT VIII did it correctly they would have to become an Indie. After all, you cannot get that sane without seeing the outnesses in the Church. Possibly the rest of the OT VIIIs just need to know that they have a place to go and to join to help straighten this scene out.

Nice, Kathy. Thank you. And thank you, Marty for posting.

All of what you write, Kathy, is so true and it feels great to read it. To pick up on just one truth — the events — I say, “thank you.”

In the late 70s and early 80s, the year’s events were local happenings. They were really nice for that reason, among others. Most of them — that I attended, at least — turned into a big dance party after the event proper was over. Somebody would put on some music and everybody would start dancing. They were fun and exciting to attend and very un-serious. That each of these events became of international satellite proportion and part of a ‘liturgical calendar’ requiring massive confirmation of public attendance and enforcement came about in the late 80s. The dance parties morphed into a massive sales activity whereby the new release, whatever that was, was sold.

Yours reminded me and rehabbed for me the church I once knew and loved.

I loved the early events! It was at one of the local events that I discovered the ability to turn dance into communication. The band was composed of org staff members jamming out rock tunes. It was a blast! It really made Scientology a real 3rd dynamic activity.

Welcome though I know you have been a part of this group for a while…The events in the early days were a lot of fun. There would be food, and music, and fellowship which is SOOO lacking in the events of today. In fact, fellowship with other Church members was an important part for me of Church membership. It was great do discuss course cogs and the applicability of the Tech. We were all about learning how to audit and helping others up the Bridge. Now its all about the almighty $$$ which I suspect has its genesis in low havingness;>…Anyway, thank you for reminding me of those early fun days!

This is a wonderful, theta, and sane account, Kathy. Thank you!

Your story reminds me again how it was in the middle to late 70’s, before DM (Devl Man?) was on the scene. I’m wondering is everyone who was in Scn at that time had the same kind of experience: Our mission had to be the most theta venue in the city. The Mission Holder, who was a Cl VIII, kept the place cheerful, light, and full of very sincere ARC. In the years that I was part of the group at that mission, I never remember any invalidation of any kind from her or her staff. There were no “thought police.” One could think or say anything. That doesn’t mean that the course room was run in anything other than a completely standard manner. Training was tought and spot on. The mission was usually full of people, because all local Scientologists wanted to be there, whether or not they were “on lines.” It was the gathering place for the Scn community, because it was a magnet for and of theta. There was no heavy ethics, yet ethics obviously was good enough, becuase everyone wanted the tech, and the tech worked.

Sorry, I hit the wrong button, I wasn’t done with my last post . . .

What a contrast with DM’s Mestology. Orgs are empty because they’re solid, heavy, lacking in warmth and ARC. Who wants to an encounter with the Thought Police? Who wants to be assaulted with demands to hand over more money to feed DM’s power hunger? Who wants to be thrown into another sec check? Who wants one’s earlier wins in training or processing invalidated?

When Scn is applied, the atmosphere is light, theta, fun. People collect in a space where real Scn is applied; they don’t have to be cajoled or threatened. Life is arc and theta. LRH teaches that. Where arc and theta are subdued or absent in a Scn org, we can be sure it’s a squirrel org. Which, of course, is the current scene.

    Hi Kathy,
Thankyou for your story. I agree with you in all you say.
Scn is fun and I love it.
But I feel is has tourned in a very threatening Church. I told a Scn friend that I was reading this blog and he stop talking to me because of being afraid. And I feel much, much better knowing that the same put points I’v seen other scientologyst also saw them but we didn’t comunicated our vew points because it was kind of Counter Intention or natter.
The things I’v reported to the Church I thought those things only happened to me, but no, I see that same things were happening all over the planet as if they were brieffed to act in such a manner so Grossely OUT TECH. To be able to see and confront the truth is a bigh step. peopke think the out tech in orgs or missions are only done on their area and it is ALL ARROUND THE PLANET.
Thankyou again, I am so proud to be here.

Kathy, your art is imbued with life. I also like the effect I came away with after viewing some …xray vision to beyond the bones of matter.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I especially loved your well-expressed enthusiasm for what it was like finding the tech after growing up with certainties and observations about life around you. Reading about your study, training and auditing rehabbed my exhilaration when I found it and trained up — night and day academy, tough and intense, then internship, and the wins wins wins everyone gave, received, cross flowed. The very stuff of Life and coolest of days.

    Dear Kathy,

Thank you for speaking up. I, too, remember the days when it was just pure fun to be part of the group, to train and to share the wins! A very different time.

I just love what’s going on. Bd’s, Bd’s- deptsing- joy – creating. Wow you are so great to tell the truth.
    To Jim Logan:

Hey what’s your Email adress ?
My wife started with auditing. Our daughter hugged and kissed her, had many wins and meant this kind of auditors the Orgs needs; that are normal people and can also laugh in session.
Her last auditing was by an Arcx Auditor that arcx break her even more with heavy Code breaks and at the end excused herself 2 weeks later for having been rude as an auditor in session and wanted to handle it.
So she is back on track. Thanks to you guys giving one the courage to apply tech.

    Just a further remark:
It is not so easy to confront what they do in our churches and dare to call it Scientology.
Not in our wildest dreams we would have thought of doing those kind of overt as described here.
But it is as it is and we have to confront it !

DM can’t run his racket for much longer.

Kathy, David Miscavige is contemplating his next foot bullet. The year has just begun and Davey has treathened to sue the Daughters of St. Paul. C of $ sueing nuns that would be Epic Fail for Davey and Epic Win for those who want him “of the lines”

  2. Hi Kathy!

Your My Girl… You been gone too lone 🙂

I am privy, we are both from Edmonton..

I am so privileged to be here with you. You absolutely nailed it in your declare. (Declare. lol. We ought to take that word back!)

Although I haven’t left comments in Marty’s blog with other stellar Scientologist who have also declared their Independence, I have read all of them. And every comment attached. The declarers are priceless. They lift my spirit like a home sick angle. Often leaving me speechless. Like insatiable theta, I can’t get enough.
I can’t wait to find and read hundreds more..

When Reporters Joe Childs and Thomas Tobin rightly pointed out ; “Isene left first, a decision that emboldened Leavitt, who inspired Katz.” in their Article on Dec 31, 2009

that was informative news to me. I couldn’t help but think right then, of the stark reality of the merit and value of “who comes first” ….

Who is next? Who will enjoy the show from the front row? The second row; The third? For certainly there will be hundreds even thousands more. All applauding.

When I read Murray & Exilda Pearlman’s wonderful statement, it was one of those speechless moments for me. I was nearly hyperventilating trying to think of how I would ask wonderful people; “Oh Please, please, pretty please, record some of those kitchen-table talks and reflections on your lively Careers in Scientology.” “I beg. I beg.”

Well, we do live in an age where many cell-phones act as recording devices, you know? For example the iPhone will record endlessly, furthermore the recorded message can then be sent near instantly straight away to any one’s in-box. It’s remarkable! Some of us are “too far back in them rows” to record anything. 🙂 If any of you would like to, in them front-rows, could please, please, turn-it-on. Sorry. I meant to say; Crank it out. No that’s not it…I mean to say; Flood our thoughts. Wait, still not right, I think I’m trying to say; Live it again! 😉 Help us LIVE IT AGAIN.
Transcribed for print, approvingly, those are irreplaceable moments in time..

All I got is this tiny comment in a Marty’s blog. Well when I grow up… ha ha… When i grow up. I’m going to be a Fireman! And I’m going to run them fucking dogs down!

Kathy. Luck has it indeed. You are a wonderful surprise. Boy do I know Edmonton! Edmonton has always been my home.. It ’s a great place. It’s not “the Universe that’s the problem”. lol.

I got into Scientology right here too, finding the video-cassette ‘An Introduction To Scientology’ in the Main Branch Downtown Library. (They refuse to carry it now.)
It was Dec. 29, 1989. I ‘ll never forget it. That year, starting on Boxing Day, was a turning point. I was stuffing a duffel-bag full of self-help books and tapes of all kinds for assessment at home from that Library. I was doing that Daily! I was trying to crack my own case, with a “something” to bring in The New Year right..I do that every year.

I knew there were answers out there. I just knew it. About two years earlier, I remember the day my gears changed. On a wonderful July day I was enjoying my morning coffee in the bright warm sun out front of my house and I realized then that I should just stop, stupid me, looking for the answers to life myself; And start looking for: The Person much smarter then I, who already found the answers. That was a major turn. That lead to LRH.

(Just in passing… Believe me I can pull it in. One time I was trying to write a book on ‘How To Stop Smoking. And Free Yourself Forever’. I was deep into Scientology by this time, had been to Flag and back, etc. It was to be a mix of LRH data and how I did it. Well, save it to say, with DMs oppression on LRH data how could I freely write? But I was trying. Anyway. I hit a solid writers’-block at the time, so I took the excuse to get some toilet paper, or something, from the Drug Store across the street as reason enough to take-a-walk. Hoping to see a cute Teller I had a crush on was part of it… I got to the store and did a B-line to the Books and Magazines section as I often do, and there it is! Steven King’s paperback ‘On Writing…’ That’s the title of the his book. Exactly what I needed at that time. Half Bio and half on writing… That man can write! It was a huge wow. I couldn’t put it down. I mean I sat on the toilet reading it for fifteen hours straight. That’s how good it was. (Canadian humor there). Ya, it’s a wonderful wonderful book.Lucky me.

Anyway, as I was saying, I was about 20 and determined to make 1989 the best year ever for me. I found the video and squeezed it into my over-stuffed bag. Got home and played it right away. I watched that video and with-in twenty-five minutes. I GOT IT. I mean, I really got it! I couldn’t finish eating, I couldn’t sit down. I got in the phone book found the local Org. And by 11:30 that night, I was routing onto Staff. In a (classless) Class V Org.

I jumped right in…I went mad after SS Zero, cleaning walls and doors, making coffee, setting up the Hall where the New Years Event was to be, with very little direction, just me up-the-pole, incredible. Then the event started via satilight….

The PR and fireworks of that 1990 New Years Event. (Remember to piro techs?) It didn’t seem a charade. To this day I’ve said what I thought it was then what I still think it is today. The are Understanding”S”. It’s plural… And then there are Stupid-ita-tezzZ!”. STUPIDITIES. It is also plural. A lot of stupidities all added up = Suppression.

But what did I know at the time?! As that clock struck midnight that night, I declared myself a Scientologist forever. Right there.

Well, the whole story is incredible. It did end a five year search for me. I was done looking and never looked back.

However six months later on Staff, eating it all up, I was broke and just knew something was wrong. They asked me to Temporarily replace the OES. I was SS Zero and OES?? After too long I had to leave too, to handle my own Bills. They said I Blew. Didn’t even know what that was. They said I would never qual for HCO now, because “you can not have a history of being Blown”. That struck a nerve. So I left anyway. Bills are our dynamics, you can not ignore. About six Months later after that, remembering the previous New Years Event and seeking another brand new start. My economic life now handled. I thought I would stroll into the Edm Org to visit and say Hello… unbenounced to me their was a frantic push for two Staff Members from every Org, in full swing, to be trained OES/FEBC at the International Training Org ( ITO) Los Angels. Wow.

And there I was…to be made a victim. I knew nothing more then, that was exactly what my Org needed. So I uprooted my life in a matter of weeks. My family thought I was completely fucked, I’m the youngest of twelve, man. They thought i was a nut case. Swallowed up whole by a Cult. Who does that? Drops all plans chasing a dream to bring Standard Admin to Edmonton? I intended to do it. (still stuck actually) I landed in L.A. Dec. 29, 1990. At about 11:pm. Remarkable.

What do you think the LRH Host of ITO said to me when i arrived?? “Your not qualed! Go back home.” She said.

SS Zero and OES Expediter doesn’t count for shit. I would of probably gone home, but I was broke. Having had to pay my own Air Fare to get there and all. Besides my Org’s phone had gotten disconnected. My luck. Well, you know, I can’t tell the whole story here. (need to speed this up) I Petitioned. Took it on myself while waiting at PAC for Petition Approval; to unplug sinks and toilets, at Big Blue, where all the other ITO Students lived three bunk-beds high. Nine to twelve to a room. Awful. I painted the entire Hallway for them with some RPFers, on my lead. The petition fell thru because the LRH Host was a super-bitch, and I was now being 3rd Partied by Telex by my ED in Edmonton as well. What a squirrel. A month later I landed in Clearwater, Florida.. I pounded Flag for five months straight for whatever I could. (originally going for Cl VIII Training) Doing work-study in Treasury; and helping the only three non SO personal there to cook for 800 staff and students. i pitched in. (I like getting in where the pressure is heavy) Often we served beans and rice. About once a month as Flag GI was down. The Class XIIs protested. Can you blame them? That made it hard in the Old Elke Lodge kitchen. All the while I was building a ‘Work Production’ to qual for training.

I might be the only Outer Org Student on Earth to be Flag Trained Staff Status II.

I got my quals in. I Petitioned for KTL and Pro Sup Course. Figuring, if I couldn’t be OEC/FEBC or CLVIII, totally missing the boat on that option. Perhaps a could “Train my Org to be on Purpose as Sup”. I thought. But, I turned them down when after all that struggle, the best I could get was the Mini Sup Course (a three day Course) in exchange for a Five Year Contract. I said “No”. The Flag LRH Host for Outer-Org Students, a German girl named Jose, who wished I would just disappear didn’t have have her way… She was my Terminal for approval. And that’s the thing about us, we don’t quit or go away. The Mini Sup Course was another slap in the face. It upset so many SO members who had helped and gotten to know me that they wrote her up. She was promptly up-moted, off her Post. Rather then “demoted”. (Because Technically she didn’t do anything wrong. Besides getting the show on the road. I’ve since found LRH PL covering this, Hubbard covered everything, he says what you’d think he say: Make sure Students are qualified BEFORE they are sent. Being true to Delivering what is Promised.) Back in Edmonton my ED thought she had me there for Five years! Crazy. I said nope! She wanted all the juice in my adventures at Flag…I was on HCO lines for an LOA. (It’s policy to stay on those lines. Hell, I had just got back…) Anyway I was not at all interested in talking to her third-parting mouth. But she insisted. So I gave her five words with such Tone 40 that I had her blown back in her chair, leaping up & out, running, not walking but running out… To the Ethics Officer for a Non-Enturbulation Order put on me. Poor guy. Couldn’t even think for himself. I got one flash. It was pinned to the Board almost as fast as she ran. Oh, those five words? “THIS ORG IS OUT ETHICS!” Me bad.

Well, thank you Kathy. Would i be writing any of this without you? I don’t think so…

I feel better, but I know I should be in Session to get this all off my chest. (I just been saving myself like a virgin for that day I will be in session cause I don’t really know what that’s is like. I have never been in session in my life.)

    So that’s it. All true.

But I can’t leave on that note! “Do I look like an idiot?”

    I checked out your web sight, and you are quit outstanding Kathy. I want to buy some. In it I found also found your bio where it says;
“Early into her 20’s, Toronto’s Second City comedy troupe set up shop in Edmonton. As Kathy was interested in learning the business end of the art world, she got a job working with the actors of SCTV as the manager of the club.”

Manager of the Club!? Wow. Do public know? Do the, Americans’ and those around the World, know what SCTV is? I don’t think so… So my girl. Lets have them have it. You been gone too long… I can’t welcome you back without digging some SCTV up; For those who don’t know what SCTV is. Watch. See if you don’t recognize these young celebrities who all made it big. SCTV was a fake Network Television Network with hundreds of skitts of comedy Game Shows; Talk Shows; Commercials; and everything. Here, for example, is a Telethon with the 1980’s song “My Girl”. A song by a Canadian Band called Chilliwack. (From Chilliwack British Columbus) In the 1980’s it was a hit here and you can bet Kathy danced to it with her sweet-heart. But this is the SCTV version of it.

Kathy, did you get any training from Ricardo Montalban School of Fine Acting too, which follows? Oh my dear. Oh my. What is next from you??

  3. Kathy Braceland

You’re an absolute joy! Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the content of your story, I love your sense of humour. You’re definitely Canadian. ha ha….

Thanks for including the SCTV clip. Screams of laughter would probably describe my response. I just love those guys! (and I love Chilliwack!)

I had the pleasure of hanging out with Katherine O’Hara for the 2 weeks she was in Edmonton (somewhere in 1980 I think). She’s like the queen of improv…damn she’s great!

That fun, sparkly glint in your eye is contagious Antoine. Keep it up eh? Please feel feel to write me any time.

  4. I’m a fellow Canadian, and Rowan Grassi was like my adopted grandfather. We were very close. He was in the Sea Org for a long time, but that was before I was born. He gave me his old camera, and taught me how to use it. I loved him very much. He left the church of Scientology at the same time as my mom, because he didn’t agree with where things were going. I miss him a lot.
